SUMMARY

Thanksgiving is an act of the will that enhances the life of the giver and is appropriate even in the midst of a battle. The history of the holiday shows that Sarah Hale persevered for 35 years to establish the national day, demonstrating that gratitude brings restoration to bitter hearts. Personal testimonies in the service highlighted how God is moving powerfully through missionary work in Nepal and Jamaica, as well as providing physical healing.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Lord, we know that your word tells us that we see the reign of your kingdom. And yet not fully, but our hope is tonight, Lord, just a little more, we know the fullness of the reign of God in our hearts. In Jesus' name and everyone's sin, amen. The Lord is here to reign tonight. Lots of people came in since you greeted someone before. Find someone else and tell them tonight why you're thankful that they came. All right? Tell them you're thankful they came. And here's why. Find somebody. Go ahead and be seated. Go ahead and be seated. All right, praise the Lord, let's go ahead and be seated. Well, praise the Lord, it's great to come out. How many can remember Thanksgiving was when we had snow on the ground? Oh, yeah. We've got a lot to be thankful for tonight. It's a beautiful evening. I just want to welcome some different groups of people. How many college students are home for Thanksgiving? Wave your hand. Praise the Lord. Let's give these folks a round. Good to have you all here. And how many folks are here tonight visiting with family or friends? Just wave your hand tonight. We're glad you're here, too. Wave them up there. Great. Welcome to all you folks. Welcome. Yes. Great. Good to have you tonight. Thank you for visiting with us. And we just pray that whatever needs to come out of your heart in thanks to God tonight will. And whatever God needs to put in there tonight, he'll do that, too. We have a great evening. Now, kids, in just a little bit, we're going to have a special play that's going to remind you of home. But before we get there, I do feel tonight very strongly that one of the things we're to do on Thanksgiving is to specifically acknowledge where we've seen God working in our lives. And we have a number of people who've asked to give a testimony. And if you did, you're first on the list. But I need you to keep it from around two to three minutes. After three minutes, those handsome men back there at the soundboard. Okay? You'll lose all your power. All right. So I'm going to invite these folks to come up. This is going to be interesting. The littlest kids. No, the littlest kids. I mean the youngest ones. Some of them are bigger than the older ones. The five and under children, we have a special program for you tonight. We thought you'd enjoy more than what we're going to do in here. Are we ready? Sue's ready. Okay. Let's have a word. Oh, good. You're going to come up with a teacher? Come on. That's good. Yeah, let's bring up the cards. We enjoyed that last week, didn't we? Knowing just where the teacher is. We're going to do that on Sunday, too. Soon. Not sure about this week. Even this week we're going to do it? Great. Okay. Let's have a word of prayer for our children. Pastor Scott, you can lead us in a word of prayer, would you, for the little ones tonight. Why don't you thank the Lord for all the teachers that have signed up to serve the next six months while you're doing that, okay? Father, we do thank you for these precious children. We thank you for their teachers. We really thank you for their teachers, Lord. They pay such a price, and they have such a special ministry to these little ones, to see that they are raised in your word and in your love. And Lord, we pray tonight for the parents of all these children also, because it's our responsibility to see that these little ones grow up into Christians, into Christian men and women who call upon your name, whose faith is rooted and grounded in your word, and whose love is experienced in our homes. We just ask that you would minister to these little ones as they go, and to all God's people said, amen. Fives and unders, follow the cards. The fours and fives are on this side. Why don't you come first? Fours and fives. And over here, the twos and threes. But before you leave, gals, just one second. How many of the teachers of Wednesday night regular Pioneer Club teachers are here? Would you stand? All Wednesday night Pioneer Club teachers that are in here tonight. Alisa, Adolfo, others, Jeff. Any other Wednesday night regular teachers that are here? Well, let's thank the Lord for these teachers and all the work around inside of them. Thank you so much. We appreciate you. God bless you and thank you for serving us with these children. All right, kids. God bless you. Have a good evening. We'll see you in about an hour. There they go. It's the tip of the iceberg. You know, I ought to say a couple things while the kids are leaving because they remind me how many of you were able to be with us at the banquet on Sunday night. Amen. Praise the Lord. Now, those hands went way up there. We had a great evening, didn't we? The Lord just blessed us so mightily. And one of the questions that's come back frequently is, can we see that video again? And tonight on Channel 11, no, I'm just kidding. We don't have quite that much influence yet. But we will be showing the video, Lord willing, and I have a couple of details to work out. Once again, for those who did not see it, at the end of the service next Wednesday night. And so you can tell people I know who want to see that. And those of you who saw it before, I don't think you probably would mind seeing it again one more time. And I want to say in that there was a lot of folks. What brought that to mind was all the folks that worked here with the kids last Sunday evening. And I know I'll forget some of their names. There was Tim and Karen McGrath and Bob and Carol Gregg. And, of course, Kathy Myers was leading that group and a couple of several other people. I don't want to forget anybody. But anyone that was here, they might all still be in the hospital. I'm not sure. But if you are here, would you stand? We want to thank you for working with the kids. Any of those laborers here? See, I knew it. They're still recovering. Well, you tell them we thank the Lord for them. Would you tell them that when you see them so they know we didn't take them for granted that night? Before I forget, too, there's no prayer meeting tomorrow morning. We want you just to rest. But there will be a meeting Friday, 6 a.m. as usual. No prayer tomorrow. If someone shows up tomorrow, God will bless them anyhow. But we won't be here to do it. And two other things. Everyone is taking those. Can I have that that you're holding right there? Thank you very much. We need you to be serious about this, church, to fill out these volunteer forms for the Christmas banquet. Do not just slip this under your seat. This is for you to fill out. Tonight will be a great night. And put it in the offering box. We've gotten some in. We need many more of you to decide how you want to help. Some of your home groups are signing up. We need that as well. All right. Thank you. And if you'd like to help decorate our buildings starting this week for Christmas, which is always a high time of celebrating for us, please see Jan Sherman. How many ladies were not here last Christmas? You didn't come to North Way one year ago. Wave your hand. Ladies especially. How many men? All right. If some of you have an eye for decorating or just you like to see things look nice, see Jan, because we have a lot of material. We just need some more hands and some ideas. And we have some great things that happen here at Christmastime. We like to celebrate. Amen, church? Christmas is a time for Christians to celebrate, not to be afraid of the spirit of Scrooge. I tell you what, he does not come here. Amen. All right. And finally, if some of you want to go to the Steve and Annie Chapman concert, there are tickets available for those who can offer a $5 donation. We'd appreciate that for YGI. That's not for North Way at all. But if you would love to go but don't have any money, if you'll see, once again, the tape table, someone from music ministry will talk to you about some tickets that have been donated. So I think that's Friday, so you need to do that right away. Okay, praise the Lord. I'm going to call upon, first of all, Sue Jones. Sue, are you here tonight? Yes, great. Come on up, would you please? Now, folks, one thing I've learned about testimonies, you're not just here to hear their story and say it wasn't that cute. You're here to, come on up, Sue, to receive something in your life that the Lord has shown them in their life. And I just know that if you'll listen with an open heart, something's going to really encourage you tonight. Sue? Thank you. Hi. On Sunday, Jay told us to be thankful for something that we had new this year. And I started to think, and I remember last year at this time was a really terrible time for me. I am really thankful for life, because that's what I have right now, and joy in my life. Last year around this time, I wanted to end my life. I had everything that anybody could ever want, but I was very depressed, and I didn't think God loved me, even though I'd been a Christian for 13 years. I still didn't think that He loved me. And that's a long story, but I sought out Christian counseling, and slowly He started to soften my heart, because I allowed Him to soften my heart. And one night real late, He shared, I was reading in my Bible, and this verse just really spoke to me. It's Isaiah 61, 1. The spirit of the sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to preach the good news to the poor. He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom from the captives, and to release them from darkness for the prisoners. And that's what I was. I was a prisoner in darkness, and I didn't know God's love. But He showed me that night that He really loved me. And I have been so released, and I have felt so much joy in the last nine months. I've still had bad days, and I've still yelled at my son and fought with my husband, but not one minute have I ever doubted that God loved me. And if you don't know that God loves you, then find out that He does, because it's so important. So just as an encouragement to you, something you just said right in the last two minutes confirms something I've been praying about now for several weeks, concerning some messages I want to bring in the month of December about the fact that most people do not believe the truth about themselves. And here's someone that knows Christ. There's a great difference between truth and fiction. And truth will set you free, and fiction or deception can destroy your life. And I'm grateful to the Lord with you tonight that you heard the truth of God. And I'm looking forward to bringing some of those messages, because I believe many people are believing lies, and thereby their life is being cut short. And we praise the Lord for you. Thanks for sharing. That took a lot of courage to do that. Thank you. All right. Next person I'd like to have come up. There's no particular reason why I'm calling these names in this order, but Hank Nuola is back from his trip visiting in Jamaica. Hank, would you slip up here? And I'll tell you what I'd appreciate. The other folks who have a testimony, why don't you come up now? You know who you are. And sit right over here beside these folks so that you don't have to climb over everybody. Okay, Sharon Fisher, Gail Trapani, Georgine, Mike Pirana, Julie Wagner. Get up and sit over there so we can make it fast. Hi, Hank. Welcome back. God bless you. Hi, gang. Hey, the God we serve is real. Did you know that? He's alive, and he's on the move in Jamaica. I went down with another representative from Covenant Community, Joe Garlington's church, with the purpose of aiding in the relief to Jamaica, and I found out something. God had a bigger plan in mind. He's taking the island. Did you know that Henry Morgan, not the movie character of years gone by, but the most notorious pirate that ever sailed in the West Indies, made his home base about a quarter of a mile from where Bob and Kim Chase are located? Did you know that the ruler spirit of piracy over that island of Jamaica is located right where Bob and Kim Chase are? Did you know that they're up against giants in the land? I did. The night we landed, there was an earthquake, 5.5 on the Richter scale, 30 miles offshore of right where Bob and Kim Chase are located, shaking the powers and principalities around that land. God is on the move. Good things are happening there. I did want to let you know that the monies that you contributed have gone into about 45,000 to 50,000 pounds of relief materials. Churches, up to 60 of them, are cooperating throughout the Kingston and eastern part of Jamaica area to see that they're distributed. Bob found a ship to transport the materials for free. It cost them a lot of money, in fact, most of what we had contributed here, to get the materials from Tampa, where people were just emptying their pockets to give them stuff, over to Miami. A ship brought it in, and now other churches are lending men, are lending trucks to bring the goods and materials to his part of the island, where those giants are. It's an exciting time. One last thing. They need some more help. They need people like... Uh-oh, I see lots of them. They need people like you to just go and be in Jamaica. They don't know what it means, really, to be a Christian in Christ Jesus, to go and stand. When you're on the cutting edge of what God is doing, it's exciting. You don't know how big and strong you are in Christ Jesus already, because there's so many like you all around. But go someplace where you're the only one, and your light begins to shine. Woo! Does it begin to shine. Things are happening. We'll tell you more another time. We're with you, Hank. The Lord is moving so powerfully in many people's lives, and as we heard on Sunday evening, it's so rare that we have an opportunity to really just allow some of these things to be shared. And another person that has experienced the power of God is Gail Trepani. Gail wants to come and share a testimony about healing, I think. I don't know all these, so I'm as surprised as you are when they come out the way they do. Gail, welcome. Why don't you stand up at the top so the folks in the back can all see you. Do you need the podium? Okay. I have a lot of things to be thankful for, but most of all, I'm thankful for my health tonight. It was probably about almost three years ago in January, I found myself sitting in church seeing double of the pastor and choir and everybody, and went home and the symptoms got worse, and I ended up going to my family doctor because my side went numb. I was totally fatigued, and he sent me to a specialist. So I went over to this man probably a couple days later, and he put me right in the hospital. And I was probably there a couple days. I had gotten some tests done. Didn't have the results back from them yet, but a really sweet man that was our Sunday school teacher in our other church sent me a card with these verses on it, and they became my life verses. It's Psalm 40, verses 1 through 3. I waited patiently for the Lord. He inclined to me and heard my cry. He drew me up from the desolate pit out of the miry bog and set my feet upon a rock, making my steps secure. He put a new song in my mouth, a song of praise to our God. Many will see and fear and put their trust in the Lord. When I was given that verse, I thought, well, that's real encouraging. But it wasn't until days later when the doctor came in and said that I was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis that those verses really came alive, especially the part about making your steps secure because when I got to the hospital, I was kind of dragging my left leg. So I thought, okay, Lord, I'm claiming this. You said you'd make my steps secure, and I'm claiming that for my life. And even if God wouldn't have healed me, I knew that He could use me anyway in the condition that I was in. So as a couple months passed, I did go into remission and went back to the doctor, and he said I didn't need to see him anymore, but that MS is an unpredictable disease. I could have an attack tomorrow or I couldn't have one maybe for three or four years. And he didn't want to see me only if I had another attack. So I could do almost anything, but I had to plan my days out. If I was going out in the evening, I would have to rest all day to go out in the evening. My husband and my kids know that I was real active in church and I was active just in life, and this kind of put a damper on that. And I couldn't understand why the Lord would let this happen to me. But as the verse said, many will see in fear and put their trust in God. My mother is an unsaved person, and this really struck her. I am a twin. My twin died at 13 months old, and she lost my other brother at 33 years old, and she lost my dad. So there was only us three girls left, and she wasn't about to let me slip out of her life. So she stayed with me for the two weeks that I came home from the hospital, and that was a real blessing to me and both to her because people would come and they'd pray with me, and she saw the Lord work in my life at that time. And it was probably three months later, it was in April, the beginning of April, another friend from church called me and asked me if I would go to a healing service with her. When you're sick, people come from all over the place wanting you to try different things. And I was real skeptical of healing services. I had had healings of my own that the Lord had healed in my own life and with my children, but I was a little bit skeptical of going to a healing service. So I told her I really didn't feel real good. I had pains in my head and my neck and down my arm, and it was a bad day, and I wasn't going to go. So when I hung up the phone, my husband said, What better time to go to a healing service than when you're not feeling well? So I said, Okay, I'll go. So I called her back, and we went down there, and I just kept praying all the way down, Lord, if you'd just have me there just to see a true healing service and build my faith in healing ministries, that's all I'm worried about right now. I'll be blessed just to sit there and watch others be healed. And it was a blessing to go down there. I went to Channel 40, Ruth Fisher's Healing Ministry, and about three-quarters of the way through the program, a counselor came over to me and asked why I was there and then asked if she could pray with me. And as I said, my head really hurt. I always had pain in my head. If I did too much, I would have pains in my head, and it would go down my neck and down my left arm. And the longer she prayed with me, I just felt that pain leave. And I prayed to the Lord, That will be my sign, Lord. If those pains are gone out of my head that are there all the time, then I will know that you have healed me. And when it left so quickly, I knew that the Lord had healed me. I think I was in shock myself. And so Ruth Fisher said to test your healing. So I went home. Joe stayed home with the kids, and I was all excited, and I told him that the Lord had touched me. I didn't even expect it, but he had touched me. And one thing I couldn't do was take a hot shower. If I took a hot shower, my side would go numb on me. So I told him that I was going to test my healing. I was going to go take a hot shower. He said, Okay, I'll stand outside the door and pray for you. And I did. I took a hot shower, and nothing happened. I've never had a symptom since. And those are symptoms you cannot pass away. I would lay in bed and have tremors, what they call, where your arm would shake uncontrollably or your leg would shake uncontrollably. And I couldn't stop it. There was no control over it. So I've never had any symptoms. And I just thank the Lord for that. When you're really sick is when you need to know the Lord, as Jehovah will fit your healer. We thank God that He uses physicians and medical people and gives them wisdom. And He chooses that way to heal. And He also, from time to time, will choose just a powerful intervention. Maybe tonight, some of you need prayer for healing tonight. And we're going to pray at the conclusion of the service. And the Lord will touch you. All right, let's quickly move on. And let's have Mike Parana would be next. Mike is back from about a six-week tour of the Himalaya Mountains in Nepal. And he's happy to be back. He's a little bit less than he was when he left here. He lost about 15 pounds. And he could talk for a long time about all the things the Lord did. He's going to have a report at another session. But tonight, we just asked him to touch on one or two things that meant a lot to him. Mike? Do you know that you live in the most blessed nation on the face of the earth? Say that. Say that to yourself. Nepal, what a country. Beautiful, but yet devastating in the poverty and the horrors. I just thank God it's a classified, a dangerous nation land-wise. And I thank God I'm back here alive walking. Days would go by, we'd hike these peaks 13,000, 14,000 feet. I thank God he got me over them each day, waking up in the morning to my sleeping bag frozen to the side of the tent. I just thank God that the guys that were with me were strong, even the porters. They still didn't have the equipment that I had. And I gave, I really realized what it is that material things are nothing when you can just give them away. I mean, jackets, stuff I had, T-shirts, socks, boots, everything. Just getting by on my own survival. And the Lord is moving heavily in Nepal. Men, we went down into this town, and all the men were in one place and they were butchering cattle. And they saw us walk down into town, and it's like light illuminating into darkness. And they all turned at once, and they dropped everything they were doing at once, and they ran towards us. They saw the Gospels coming out of the back of our packs. And they still had blood running down their arms and hands. They were just so hungry. And I can just think of Isaiah 5.55 where it says, Behold, you shall call a nation that you know not, and nations that know you not shall run to you. It's just impacted my life. I'd like to share more. There will be a time for a slide show and a video. But it's just so good to be back in America. Just keep your prayers up. I'm still fighting a upper respiratory thing. And it's just so good to land back in Kennedy. Oh, boy. Why don't we pray with Mike right now for this, all right? Lord, we thank you for this servant who went out, went into a very dark place where he wasn't really even welcome. But, Lord, the Gospel was open to people, and lives were touched. And certainly we all see tonight that you touched his life. And we ask now, Lord, you'd recover that which has been worn away and restore his strength physically and bring healing, Lord, to this respiratory ailment. And, Jesus, we pray that this changed heart in this man, Lord, would be channeled in a way that you would be able to use all these energies, Father God, to promote your purpose in him, Lord, and to inspire others to share in this great call. Lord, we thank you for the privilege of being a church that sends people out where the need is greatest. In Jesus' name, amen. Thanks, Mike. I just want to say I felt your prayers in a lot of steps. I must have woke a lot of you up with the praying spirit on some of those cliffs, but, boy, you really backed me up. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Mike told me he had 14 rolls of film. So he's got a lot of pictures he's going to be showing at another time. Praise the Lord. All right, and I think we'll take one more testimony now, and then we're going to move on. Sharon Fisher asked to share. Sharon, are you here? Great. Hi, everyone. I'm very thankful to be here, and I'm especially thankful to be able to share my testimony with my family. Part of my family is here this evening for the first time, my mother, my sister, my brother, and his girlfriend. Thanks for being here. My testimony starts on just a story that happened to me the other day. I was in the bathroom. I just finished putting my makeup on, and women, we know what it's like when we have our makeup on. Don't touch us. Don't come near. No tears, nothing. Well, a song came on the radio by Stephen Curtis Chapman. You might be familiar with it. It's Who He Really Is. Do we know God for who he really is? Well, this song was on, and I've heard it so many times before, and for some reason, and I know what reason, but for some reason today, on Thursday, this song just found me in my bedroom on my knees crying in tears, not tears of sadness, but tears of, well, let me back up a little bit. Before, when I was doing my makeup, I was thinking about preparing myself for the holidays, you know, cleaning my house and what I'm going to do about getting the carpet clean and so on, and all the rooms in the house. And I was so caught up in the holidays about everything looking nice and everything like that. And then this song came on, and before you know it, the Lord had me in my bedroom on my floor, on my knees, praying and crying. And he said, Sharon, he said, why are you so caught up with having a clean house? What about the rooms in your heart, your spiritual house? Are they clean? Are they free from sin? Are there any doors that are locked and shut that need to be dusted or to be cleaned and just replenished? And yes, there are. And he said, in order to share your house, your house with people, you have to have your spiritual house prepared. Do people know who God really is in me? Do they see that light in me, in my work, everything I do throughout the day, in my walk with the Lord? That's much more important. And I think, to make my story short, because you all know me, anyone that knows me, I'm shy and I don't talk much, but I think the message God was trying to speak with me was it's so much more important to have your heart pure, your heart right with God. I don't want anybody to steal my crown from me because the Lord's given it to me. I'm willing to share it with anyone, but I'm not going to let anybody rob it from me. So I'd like to just share and challenge everyone, not only because of the holidays coming up, not to worry about our house in which we live, but our spiritual house. Is it clean? Is it going to be right before God and before every man and woman on this earth? Thank you. Well, talking about our house, we're going to go ahead right now, boys and girls and moms and dads and all the rest in between, and have what we're going to call a family snapshot, something that could go on in every home in America and maybe even yours. And I think you'll see some things tonight that have to do with what's really important in life. Now, we're going to need to have a couple of our men move this podium way in the back or down and over or something, okay? All right, now, let's all stand for just a second and join a hand, and we're going to prepare for this. Let's have a word of prayer. Lord, we thank You for these testimonies and the many reports of how You're dealing personally in the lives of Your people and the way You're using them and the way You're training them and the way You're shaping them and giving them values that really matter in life. We pray now, Lord, that for every young person in this room and every person here tonight, Father, and every parent as well, and every one of us, Lord, who has a relationship that needs just a little more sharpening, that You'd speak to us tonight and just cause this little insight, this little glimpse of what can happen in our homes. Let it come to life for us, Father in Jesus' name. Amen. Amen. Praise the Lord. You can be seated. And folks will be getting the lights I trust. Well, I've got some good games here. I've got the Battleship. We've got Risk to Play. We've got Stratego. Mike, our goal is to play together, not kill each other. Don't we have anything a little less aggressive? Oh, sure. I've got everything. Look, I've got Yahtzee. I've got Big Boggle. Hey, I'll tell you what. I've even brought Candyland, huh? Oh, honey. You know, this could be an all-nighter. We are talking about an evening together with our children. We're going to have trouble getting them to stay here for an hour, let alone all evening. Well, it's a start, though. Well, heaven knows, we do need to start somewhere. Well, thanks for supper. I'll see you later. See what I mean? Hey, hey, hold on. Jane, where are you going? Over to Sue's house. Not tonight. This is family night, remember? Exciting, isn't it? Do you mean we have to be together all night? Yes, dear. Come on over and sit down. Where are your brothers, huh? I think Chris is upstairs. Yeah, I think so, too. Hey, Chris? Chris? Chris! Come on, family night is starting. We have candy now. No, you're not going to just sit in your room. Come on, you're going to be with us. Hi, Dad. Hi. Now, where's Ned? How are you, Dad? Oh. You're not going to try to sleep on us now, are you? Hey, I heard this is BYOD night, bring your own game. How about Skripples? Skripples? Skripples? Isn't that an adult game? Well, if it's a little bit more challenging than Candy Land is. Well, okay. Is this what you guys want to play, then? Yeah, looks like it. All right, I'll just put these aside. Ned, you want to give us the rules, then? Oh, sure. Okay, each person gets five question cards. Okay. A ballot card and a reply card. Okay. Five of these? Yeah, one of those. Okay. Now, the object of the game is to ask somebody a question. Okay. If you agree with the question, fine. If you don't, then you challenge them. That's all there is to it? That's the basic gist of the game, but you'll understand as we go along. Dad, why don't you go first? Okay. Well, then, let's see. I get to ask any of these questions of anybody, and I want them to reply the way it says on my reply card, right? Right. Okay. Jenny, you happen to pick up the telephone, and there are two strangers on the line in a conversation, and they don't know that you're listening in. Now, do you continue to listen? The phone. The telephone just rang. Hello? Oh, come on, Ned! I would not! I would not! No, no, no! I would not! No, you should do it! I would not! I thought I got the challenger. Yeah! Sorry, Dad. Oh, you would, too. Yeah! Okay. Vote. Okay. If you don't, she's telling the truth. Pitchfork, she's lying. I'm sorry. Pitchfork. Pitchfork. Hey, that's what I said. Thanks a lot. This is some family game. Oh, well. Okay, Dad, you discard your card. I'll go next. Oh. Okay. Hey, this is good. That means I'm winning, huh? All right. All right. Okay. Chris. Yeah. This is for you. Okay. Okay. You're walking down the street. Right in front of the bank, you find a bag with $200 in it. You pick up the bag. The question is, do you keep it? Well, no. I'd tell someone in the bank about it. Chris, there's no identification. There's no nothing. You pick up the bag. You walk away scot-free. I'd still tell somebody. But, well, no one would know, so I don't know why would you say something. Well, somebody might come looking for it. So, I wouldn't feel right if I kept it. Wait.
