The Courage to Go On III, Grace In, Grace Out

This is North Way tape number 554. This message was delivered on Sunday, October 19th, 1986, by Pastor Jay Passavant of North Way Christian Community. We've been talking over the last weeks, excluding last Sunday when we heard about the movement of God in China, we talked the previous weeks about the courage to go on and take your next step in Christ. What it means to go on and move ahead, to leave behind the old and to embrace the new. Just a few years ago, not many, just a few years ago, I started receiving notification that my old alma mater, my college alma mater, was considering actively making the transition from being an all-male school to coeducation. You cannot imagine the trauma that this produced in some of the alumni. You couldn't begin to even contemplate how much emotion this stirred up to think that Washington University, one of the oldest schools in the entire country, about 200 years old, was considering abandoning its heritage of being an all-male school and letting women come in. I want to just answer to some of your preconceptions right now. I did not go there because there was no women. Someone in the first service was thinking, I always knew there was something strange about it. I went there to an all-male school because I knew if I went to a co-ed school I probably wouldn't graduate. So I made it simple. Carol was waiting for me right at the end of school and that was super. But Washington and Lee, just a battle erupted over leaving the old values and traditions and the honor system and all of this was all going to go out the window, some of these people thought. But you know what happened? As they watched things develop around the country, they noticed all the Ivy League schools began to go, suddenly West Point. When it was all said and done, there were only five private schools in the entire country that had not gone co-ed. And you know what the enrollment of all five of those schools was doing? Plummeting down. And so it became a simple matter of change or die. Change or die. And guess what the trustees voted to do? To change. One of them wanted to die. He said, I'd rather die. But beloved, we're talking about change. We're talking about the courage to go on and take your next step in God as he reveals it in his word to you. Now in this study in Hebrews, I want to talk to you about a change from the old covenant to the new covenant. Very common terms for most of us, but I'm going to examine them a little bit. I want to show you how incredibly relevant this is to us today. How you won't begin to believe the amount of application this message will have to you today out of the book of Hebrews for your life and your personal walk in Christ if you'll stay with us. Now I'm going to read beginning in verse 7, actually verse 6. Follow with me. Hebrews 8, 6. But the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is a mediator is superior to the old one. And it is founded on better promises. For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. But God found fault with the people and said, the time is coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt because they did not remain faithful to my covenant. And I turned away from them, declares the Lord. This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time, declares the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. I will be their God and they will be my people. No longer will a man teach his neighbor or a man his brother, saying, know the Lord, because they will all know me from the least of them to the greatest. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. The old covenant, what was it? Well, what is a covenant, first of all? Let me give you two scenarios. You decide which one is a covenant. We just talked a few moments ago about earning some money. Let's assume that I invite Bob over to my home and I say, Bob, I need to have you remodel my bathroom. You look it all over and you say, well, Jay, it's going to cost you this much money and I'll come in and do it if you'll pay me this much money for supplies and labor. I say, great, that's a deal. What's $10,000 these days? And we put Bob into work. That's one scenario. Here's the second scenario. A family gathers together in the office of a prominent attorney to hear the reading or disposition of the will of Uncle George. One of those attending, a family member by the name of Jeffrey, sits in anticipation at the edge of his seat as his name comes up. The attorney reads, and to Jeffrey, my beloved nephew, I bequeath $50,000 every January 2nd. And what did Jeffrey have to do? Simply pick up his check every January 2nd and remain single. Now which of those two stories represents really what the Bible means when it talks about a covenant? Most of us think that a covenant is something that two parties mutually agree upon. A covenant is I'll do my part, you do your part, and we'll both benefit. But, beloved, a biblical covenant is, as we'll see on the overheads, a disposition or a testament made by one party by which another party is benefited by ascribing to the understood conditions. In other words, there is a covenant maker who gives particular blessing and benefit to another party, and that covenant maker has the sole right to determine what the conditions are. Then you determine if you'll keep them or not. That's what the Bible means when it says covenant. Now in your Bibles, what is the old and the new called? What? Testaments, right? That really is the Hebrew and Greek word for covenant. We're talking about the old covenant of your Bible, and now the new covenant of your Bible. Keep that in mind. Now what was the old covenant? Well, in Exodus chapter 19, why don't you flip over there so you can just see it for yourself. Exodus 19, here's what the Bible says the covenant is. This is the most terse, succinct statement of a covenant. Exodus 19.5, now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. And although the whole earth is mine, you will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. There it is. That's the old covenant. The blessings of God will be yours if you keep my covenant. You obey my voice, I'll make you something special in all the earth. Now God went on to elaborate that, extrapolate it if you will, in Exodus 20. What happened in Exodus 20, anyone? What did God give? Look over on your page. The Ten Commandments, right? And then God began to tell them, now this is what it means, folks, to keep the old covenant. Do these things and you shall live. Conversely, don't do these things and you shall surely die. That is the old covenant. Now the Israelites got excited because God said, not only will I bless you, but listen, when you encounter an enemy, I'll go right before you and I'll destroy him. When you run into an obstacle, I'll move it out of the way. Well these Israelites got excited, this is a great deal, all we got to do is obey God's voice and he's going to go before us. And being men and women of their word, what did they do? They failed terribly. They disobeyed the voice of God. In fact, when Moses came down off the mountain with those tablets of stone, what were the people doing? They were partying, worshiping a golden calf that they created. They didn't have any ability whatsoever to obey the voice of God. They failed miserably. Now beloved, listen, here's where we get down to where you live. Most people that you deal with relate to God according to the old covenant. If we went up here to Denny's afterwards today, as many of you do, you start talking to people sitting around there about how they relate to God. And they'll tell you something like this, they'll say, well I know God's fair and I'm doing the best I can and I think in the end God will weigh it all out and he'll see that my goods outweigh my bads and he'll say, okay, you make it. You talk to some people and they'll say, well, listen, my religion says if I do these things then God will accept me and I'm doing them every week just like my religion says to do. Now the latest Gallup poll says 95% of all Americans believe in God. If they believe in God, if you believe God's there, you need to decide how you're going to relate to him. You don't just believe him and forget about him, you've got to know how to relate to him. And people all seem to relate to God according to the old covenant. Do this and you shall live, don't do this and you shall die and that's what they believe. God's fair. How about this one? Hey listen, I'm really sincere about what I believe, so you're sincere about your belief, I'm sincere. Does God say all you need to do is be sincere? I was sincerely traveling 70 miles an hour on the turnpike some years ago, of course. It doesn't matter, does it? God said this is the standard, it's my way of doing it. But beloved most people, now listen, even most Christians relate to God according to the old covenant. Now I believe in the New Testament, but you know what I'm convinced of is we operate in our day-to-day walk in Christ according to the idea that if we do these things, we'll live. And if we don't do these things, we'll die. What things, Jack? Read my Bible, pray every day, give to the church, witness now and then, go to the nursery when it's my turn, show up at home group, don't swear, don't drink, at least too much, hello? Lots and lots of people relate to God. Now listen, you don't think you're going to be saved because of that, you're too smart to know that. You know that you can't earn your salvation. You say, I don't have any choice but to trust God to be saved. But when it comes to doing better in the Christian life, do these things and you shall live. Beloved, what are you hearing when you hear that? What voice is saying that? That's the voice of Mount Sinai. That's God, you think, saying, do these things, get blessed. That's old covenant. That's the old way of doing it. I'll be more blessed, I'll be more used, I'll be closer to God if I pray more regularly, if I come up here and sing more faithfully or whatever it might be. I was with a believer not too long ago who said, you know, I really want to pray every morning. In fact, I set my alarm, 5.30, whatever it is. I want to get up and I just, you know, I just roll over and hit that thing and I don't mean to hit it. I mean, I don't mean to knock it off the table and pull the plug out, but that's just what happens. And I try to get up and I can't get up and I try to get up and I just can't get up. I just, you know, do you still love me, pastor? You know what they're really saying is, does God still love me even though I can't get up to pray? Now, what happens the more you try in this scenario? What happens? The more you try, what happens? The more you fail and the more you fail, the worse you feel and the worse you, and pretty soon you don't even want to come to worship on Sunday because you can't stand to see happy people because you feel so bad. You've messed up so much the week before. You've disappointed so many people. You've had so many times when you said, God, why did I say that? Why didn't I do this? Why couldn't I give that or share this? And guilt and condemnation just keep on going and keep on going and there's another name for this cycle of trying to please God and failing and trying to please God and fail and what's it called? What's another name for it? Religion. It's the works religion. That's right. How many of you left religion to find Jesus? Amen? Well, let's find him together, not just to be saved, but to go on, to go on and take our next step. Now, beloved, this is so practical. Let me give you a scene. It's Thursday evening. You get home from work. You've had a long day. Your wife's had a long day. You're sitting at dinner table at 6.30. She says, honey, there's home group tonight. Oh, God. Another meeting. Another meeting. I can't go to home group. I just, I mean, that's all we ever do is have meetings. I can't go to home group. I don't even want to go to home group. We don't do anything at home group. I don't, those people at home group have all the problems and I'm just sharing what people tell me. Okay? So you don't go to home group and that night your wife says, honey, can we just get up a little early and pray tomorrow morning before you go to work? You're always on me about praying. I mean, I just, I can't ever seem to do enough for you to prove that I'm spiritual. You pray and I'll sleep because I need to feel better than I did today. Now, what happened inside of you this morning when you saw me go as far as to pass out a flyer? And right now while we were sitting there together, fill it out, did you say, oh gosh, more money. If I hear memo N-E-Y around here one more time, I'm not coming back. I know why you're laughing. All right? Listen, all of these things are coming at you from the outside. These are all demands on your life and beloved, if all you're doing is trying to keep a code of ethics, even if it's a Christian version, it's a North Way version to you, then there is something woefully wrong with your understanding of the new covenant. The new covenant is to be something that works from the inside out of you. It's to be something that breaks forth in your life, something that you can't help contain. You're looking for expression. You want to be giving of it. You want others to know it. You can't wait to share it because it's life coming out of you. Spring up, oh well, within my soul. Spring up, oh well, and make me whole. You say, well, pastor, I don't understand. I mean, shouldn't I be disciplined and don't I have to worry about reading the Bible or witnessing or whatever? Don't I have a responsibility, you say, in church? Responsibility is, write it down, definition, response to God's ability. That's your responsibility, to learn to respond to God's ability in you. The new covenant now is what I want to talk about for the last few minutes because that is where we're called to live. I told you what the old covenant was, do this and live. What is the new covenant? Did we put up that overhead yet? I don't even know if I put it up. Okay, well, there's the old covenant. There's the conditions, do this and live, and here's the blessings. There you go. They're blessings. God said, I'll prosper you, I'll give you security, I'll raise you up among the nations, I'll favor you among the peoples. Now, what is the new covenant? Well, remember, a covenant maker says, here's what I'm going to give you, here's what you do in return. Remember that. Now, we're not talking about an agreement that we sit down and bargain with God. Here's what happens. God says, I'm going to give you the same security, the same favor, the same grace, the same blessings. But when we look to see, beloved, in the scripture, what are the conditions, guess what we find? There aren't conditions like there were in the old covenant. In fact, listen, the very things that were required to fulfill the old covenant are promised in the new covenant. The very thing that God wanted you to do in the old, he promises to do in you in the new. Listen to Ezekiel, chapter 36, verse 27. And I will put my spirit in you and move you, move you, move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. Huh? What? You mean the very God who called me to obey his voice is going to put it inside of me to do it? He's going to give me the strength, the motivation, the power to do it? He's going to move me to obedience? You see, beloved, what it becomes to us is God putting in us what he wants out of us. That's the new covenant. That's the new covenant. God putting in you what he wants to take from you. Let's just say this morning that I had a need. Let's change it around a little bit. Let's say, this is stretching the analogy a bit, that I am God and I come to Scott. Let's take that out of the scene. I don't want to stretch it that far. Let's just say I'm Scott's friend. I come to Scott and say, Scott, I need $500 today. Would you give me $500 right now, please? Well, Scott would say, sure, but then he would check and see that he doesn't have it, most likely. Scott says, Jay, I don't have $500. Scott would say, Jay, I wish I had $500. I mean, I really want to bless you with $500, but I don't have it. Now, if I start shaking Scott, will that change it? No, he just doesn't have it. Now, let's just add one little ingredient to this scenario. Let's say, first thing in the morning, when I see Scott, I give him, let's say, $1,000. And then I come back to him a few hours later and say, Scott, I need $500. What is he able to do? He's saying, hey, great, here's $500 of the $1,000 that you gave me. Glad to do it. Glad to return it to you. You see, beloved, the difference is God puts in us what he wants out of us. He doesn't extract from us what he expects us to do. So many of us have sought to live by trying to obey God from an external motivation and source of supply. God said this. It's God working in you both to will and to do his good pleasure, Philippians 2.13, Hebrews 13.21. He may work in you what is pleasing in his sight. Now, does this begin to work a little liberty in your life? Does this begin to make you think that there's a possibility that you can break out of the cycle of commitment and failure, commitment and failure, condemnation and guilt? I'm a lousy Christian. I can't do what anyone else is doing. I can't even get up and be with God. You see, beloved, it's this. Grace puts in you what God wants out of you. Hallelujah. You know, when it comes to being saved, we know we can't do that. So we receive it. Do you know that's the truth? We know we cannot generate our salvation. We know that God's standard is too high. What is God's standard of acceptance? Sinless perfection. There will not be one person that will walk through the gates of heaven that has any stain in their life. Now, you might think you're doing a better job than your next door neighbor or the person you're sitting beside right next to you now. But in God's eyes, how many of you know, it doesn't matter if you can jump 10 feet or 20 feet, the chasm is 10 miles long and there's only one way to get over it between life and death, between perfection and sin, and it's by going over the bridge of Jesus. So we receive that. But when it comes to holiness, when it comes to purity, when it comes to giftedness, when it comes to a heart for God, when it comes to prayer, when it comes to desiring the Word, we look to ourselves somehow to generate that. Hear me, church. This will free us as a people. God will put in you what he wants out of you. Would you say that with me? God will put in me what he wants out of me. Say it again. God will put in me what he wants out of me. What amazing love. What freedom from condemnation. This is the new covenant. Look with me here. Look at verse 10. God says, I will put my laws in their minds and write them on their hearts. Suddenly I'll want to do what God wants me to do. Now let me tell you a little story about, there's some people here that I could tell you about. I won't name their names, but they're here this morning. When they came to Christ a year and a half ago, they had a lot of friends that fooled around and liked to party and those kind of things. One of their big concerns was, well, if I come to God, will I have to give up my parties? That's what I really enjoy doing is going out on Friday and Saturday night. You can fit your middle class description of what I'm talking about in here. It might be some other thing, but for them, it was their party life. They couldn't imagine giving that up for God, parties, because that was all there was. They thought, you mean God's just going to squash me down and make me miserable? Every Friday night, I'm going to want to climb out and get to the party. Over the months, guess what happened? God began to grow up inside of them. Know what took place? Desires began to change. The people they partied with said, well, what's going on with you? You're getting a little strange. Then they went back and said, you know, there's a party Friday night, but I don't really think I want to go. I'd rather go to the fellowship. I'd rather have just some time alone. Beloved, how many of you have experienced God changing your desires? You see, that's the new covenant. That's God putting in you what he wants out of you. You say, well, this is too good to be true. The problem is simply this, and I'll conclude. How do we then appropriate? How do we have God put in us what he wants out of us? There's not one of us here that wouldn't be honest and say, hey, I'm not making it everywhere I need to be. What do we do? Well, this is the only condition of the new covenant. Ask God, and he will give it to you. You say, that's awfully easy. I've asked God for things, and it hadn't worked. Ask God, and he'll give it to you. You see, beloved, grace cannot resist faith in itself. I told you that two weeks ago. When you confess your need to God and say, Lord, I don't have the love I need for this sister. I don't have the patience I need for my kids. I don't have the desire to get up and pray. If you'll say, Lord, and I realize that I'm failing you in that, God begins to work a desire in you. And here's the key. Don't give up because it doesn't happen tomorrow. Where we miss it is right there. We say, well, God, I want to be able to rejoice when I put my offering in the box, but I don't. So I pray and say, Lord, make me rejoice. Well, next Sunday comes, and I hate it even more. That's my money going in there. Beloved, the key is God will put it in. Just give him time to make the change. How do we know we're in a process of change? We're in a process. The same verse that I read to you in Philippians 2.13 is preceded by this verse. Work out your salvation with fear and trembling. Work it out as God works it in you. And we need to see that it takes time for God to develop this. You say, well, I just want tomorrow to do it. I want to wake up tomorrow at 5 o'clock and feel good about it. Something you ought to wake up right now and feel good about, in fact. What is God doing the distance between when you ask and when you receive? What is he doing there? We've all lived there. What is he doing? He's changing you, putting faith in you, causing you to walk by faith and not by sin. Look at verse 12. This is what God says. This is why he'll give you what you need. For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more. When you ask God in weakness, he delights to come. Is this what Paul maybe meant when he said, I glory in my weakness, for when I am weak, then he is strong. You see, Jesus loves to hear us say, I need you, Lord. I need you, Lord. Dependence upon God. A little over a year ago, I was involved with the elders of the church in a really heavy time of considering what direction were we going to go and the oversight of this body. The body was growing and still is, and at that point we were just kind of shifting back and forth under the management of the whole thing. And it was tough. And I just couldn't seem to hear what God was saying. And I remember clearly as we went to an elders' retreat, one night I came home from the retreat and I was so heavy, and I said, Lord, we're not going anywhere. Nothing's happening. God, you've got to do something. I need wisdom, Father. Or else we're just going to bog down and the whole church is going to stop moving ahead. And that next morning, God met us. Never forget that. He met us. And unity began to develop. And we rose up together in one spirit. And God gave us his direction and his plan. That's his desire. He'll put in you what he wants to give. When you're feeling worse about yourself than before, begin to rejoice. When you know you can't do it, then you're about to do it. When you can see you can't, then you can begin to receive. God's waiting for you to say, I can't do it. We usually won't say that. But right now today, beloved, I'm going to ask you, in what area in your life do you need to get out of the old covenant and on to the new? When do you need to be the one that's saying, I know what the Lord is saying? When do you need to be among those who would say, He is my God in this area. This is what the Lord wants to work. And he's going to do it. Amen? Let's pray. Father, thank you right now for what you're doing to work righteousness, peace, and joy in your people. Lord, I thank you for a covenant that promises us great blessing, Lord, if we'll simply ask and believe. Lord, I thank you that all we need to do is to ask and believe. As we confess our need and call out to you, Lord, that your grace begins to flow into us. Hallelujah. And what you want out of us, God, you put into us first. In the name of Jesus, Father, make that real to us. Can we all stand, please? Right now I'm going to ask you to do something. 2 Corinthians 3 says this, that God has made you a competent minister of the new covenant. You may not feel very competent today, but right now I'm going to ask every person, no one to leave, please. If you'll turn where you are right now and agree with two or three other people for God to put in you what you're going to confess you need to get out, what he wants to get out of you. What am I saying? I want you to say in your circle, I'll say right now, I want to have more love for the word of God. I want to have a greater desire to worship. I want to be able to love my neighbor or my husband. I want victory over a habit. And right where you are, I want you to confess that need and then to agree that God's going to put in you what he wants to get out of you. Would you minister the new covenant right now to one another? That's what God wants you to do. Be a minister. Invite the people around you. If you're visiting and you just want to listen, you don't have to say anything. You can just listen. But I want you just to stand together, if you would, and pray for one another. Go ahead right now and do that. Pray for one another. You are proud. You're all alone. You are faithful and righteous and true. You're my master. You're my savior. And I love serving you. How many of you sense God is just loosing something in your life today? You have faith to believe God's going to work anything. Hallelujah, Father God. Lord, I thank you right now that your word is a sure covenant, Father, and that Jesus Christ is the mediator of that covenant, that the Lord Jesus himself stands between us now and the Father, and that he is the one that speaks to the Father on our behalf and says, My beloved has need of this, Father. And, Church, you need to see Jesus now. He's the one that's delivering the blessing of the covenant to your life. He is the surety, that is to say, the one who will himself give the blessing that you might receive it. Hallelujah. Hallelujah, Jesus. We thank you for that. I just need to ask this question as we prepare to leave this morning. Have you encountered the real Jesus in your life? Or are you still following a religion? Have you come to know a man, yet a God? All around us in the world you'll find people talking about this and that, things to give your life to. You'll see all kinds of people who are saying, Well, there really is only one thing that counts, and that's just to get ahead. But I want to call you today to this. See that there is, the Bible says, no life apart from God. There's no life apart from God. You're just living in an image of reality. Today you can receive the love of God in your life through Christ Jesus. Many of you today have done that, but some have not. You're here today as a visitor, perhaps, or maybe you've been coming. But today it's clear to you that the Lord is speaking to you. Would you bow your heads? I'm not calling you today to try harder to be good. I'm not calling you today to do the right things. I'd like everyone just now for a moment to be still and ask yourself, Do you know that God is in your heart? Do you have a relationship with Christ? Please, no one else leave now. Let everyone just be quiet for a moment. You need to receive the Lord today, and you want to. You're not sure what to do. Well, here's what the Bible says. If you believe in your heart, the Lord Jesus, that God raised him from the dead and you speak it with your lips and confess him as Lord, you'll be saved, the Bible says. Right now, I just want you to say this prayer or something like it. Go ahead and pray where you are right after me now. Heavenly Father, in Jesus' name, I see my need for you today. I declare I cannot make it on my own, and I choose today to receive your salvation. I choose to receive life in Christ today. Come into my heart now. Be my Lord and my Savior. Now, with every head bowed, please, so that I'm not distracted by your eyes, if you prayed that prayer or that was the desire of your heart that I just spoke, that's what you really want with everyone else. And I'm not going to embarrass you. I just want to agree with you that today you're starting a walk with Christ. Everyone else has their head bowed. You lift yours right now and let our eyes meet, and I'll agree with you where you are that you're starting a walk with Christ. Okay? Maybe you're looking at me for that reason. Just nod your head. I agree with you today that you're receiving Jesus today. Amen. Let me just see your eyes and wave at me if I miss you. I just want to agree with you. Miss, is that why you're looking at me? We're going to have an exciting opportunity to grow in prayer through the ministry of Dale Gentry. You have it in your flyer there. Take it with you, but listen. Most of you do not come on Wednesday nights. Too much going on. You're saying, well, here you go again. You just said, don't force me to do anything. I'm asking you to ask God to put it in you to come Wednesday night, to make you have the desire to be here, because I believe this. It will benefit your life. We had a chance to be with Dale Gentry. He's not a kind of guy that's going to get up and just we're all going to go, wow. He's the kind of guy through maturity and wisdom has grown in a life of prayer, and he's going to lead us and teach us. So it'll be Wednesday night, Thursday night, and Friday night here. But come Wednesday, and then let the Holy Spirit. How many of you saw the dirt when you were driving in out there? Guess what we're starting to do? Fix the driveway. Amen. And it comes because of your faithfulness in giving. Last week, the Lord blessed us. It was just great. The offering came in last Sunday, and during the week, another check came in of a substantial amount of money. And so during the course of the week, over $20,000 came in for the commitment. Beloved, that's why we're moving ahead, but we need you to be faithful to God in what you're committed to. Can we pray for our offering right now? We'll just leave the boxes back there. Let's lift our hands and pray. Father, we commit to you these tithes and offerings, Lord, as seed, knowing, God, that we're planting them in the garden of God, and that, Lord, you'll bless many through them, all these gifts, Lord, but you'll also bless us. And so we pray now, Lord, cause us to have the joy of giving, Lord, through a cheerful heart, to know that you're going to attend to these gifts and bless us through them. In Jesus' name. Beloved, one last thing. We're going to stand and rejoice. Let's stand first of all. You want to know why people are coming to this church? Because God's doing something. We're serious about it. You may not understand it all if you're visiting, but you keep coming. Today, our two services, how many pledges came in already and still on the way? 212. Hallelujah. Let's believe the Lord, okay? Hallelujah. Let's sing it. Through our God we shall do valiantly. It is He who will tread down our way. We'll sing and shout the victory. Christ is King. For God has won the victory and set His people free. The Lord has laid the enemy. The earth shall stand and sing. Through our God we shall do valiantly. It is He who will tread down our way.
