Spirit Fullness and Speaking Gifts

October 9, 1991

44:44

SUMMARY

The teaching explores the biblical validity of spiritual language, clarifying that while tongues are not required for salvation, they are a profound manifestation of the Holy Spirit. A distinction is made between a private prayer language for personal improvement and the public gift of tongues, which requires interpretation to benefit the whole church. Believers are encouraged to use these gifts to build their inner spirit and enhance their communication with God.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Now, what we're going to do is I'm going to lead you through this outline and kind of embellish it at points, and then at the end of each section we're going to open for questions. Because what I feel happens so often in this subject is a teacher goes all the way through the subject and you get stuck back in phase one and you don't know what's going on. And tonight I think it's important, because of the subject matter, that everyone kind of stay together. Now, a couple things. If you read all the way through in front of me, you know, you probably won't help your cause. So why don't you just let me lead you through it. That way we can kind of stay together. If you haven't noticed, it's also been punched so it'll fit in your North Way Prayer Notebook. Jan, do we have any of these left? You know, we gave away all of them already. Well, the first 400 and whatever got yours, and maybe we can get some more at the turn of the year. But anyhow, that's what it's for. So it'll fit right in there. You can always go and get one, you know, and draw your own picture on the front. Might have the same impact. I have to say, too, I'm very comfortable with this subject, even though it's probably one of the most, has been one of the most controversial ones in the last 25 or 30 years in all the Christian church. And the reason I'm comfortable with this is because I've been all over the map. And I know what some of you, where you're coming from, if you're from a very constricted kind of dispensational theological church or background, I know where some of you are who are from the more, you know, wide open Pentecostal kind of thing. There's not too much out there that I don't, haven't seen in one way or another experienced. But I do think tonight, and here's the point, that in the next 30 or 40 minutes, we're going to prepare ourselves for some ministry. And then we're going to allow time at the end of the service, even if we dismiss early so some can stay around to have some prayer. All right, let's look at it together. Despite the many abuses, fears, and problems associated with speaking in tongues or a spiritual language, and by the way, the word glossolalia there, when you say speaking in tongue, it's not exactly an accurate translation. I mean, it has to do, that term has, you know, creates a lot of defensiveness in people. Spiritual language is a very appropriate translation, which I kind of prefer. There is a profound purpose in this manifestation for any open-hearted believer in Jesus. Now look at this, fanatical abuse, rigid resistance, and noncommittal. And I dare say if there's one significant predisposition in this body of believers, it's the third. We have a few fanatical people, but on this, but very few. We have some who are, you know, they're here kind of kicking and screaming because they know that this is something that we believe the Bible teaches. But the majority of people who are not currently moving in this whole arena are either have, you know, kind of tried and felt that, you know, to be filled with the spirit didn't happen to them and to have a spiritual language. And so they kind of given up or they just never really even looked into it because they were pretty happy the way they were. Noncommittal indifference are all expressly prohibited in scripture. It is therefore incumbent upon us to come to grips with this expression as a power possibility made available to us by the exaltation of the Lord Jesus at the right hand of the Father. Now, you know, I'm sure that Jesus promised to send the spirit when he was exalted and he did so. He fulfilled that promise. And let's turn to Acts 2.33 and you'll need your Bibles tonight. If you're here tonight without your Bible, unless you're a first-time visitor, you know, you're already ill-equipped for what's going to happen because we're going to look at a lot of scriptures tonight randomly. Acts 2.33. Let's start at 32. Acts 2.32 and 33. For God has raised this Jesus to life as and we are all witnesses of the fact exalted to the right hand of God. He has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has poured out what you now see and hear. What had they heard? Oh, okay. I'm sorry. I didn't read that. So I guess I should read it, huh? Okay. Well, let's flip back to 2 verse 1. Now, when the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. And they saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled. How many of them? With the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. And then it goes on and describes who was there. And reading all those verses can almost sound like speaking in tongues, you know. But anyhow, amazed and perplexed, verse 12, they asked one another, what does this mean? Now, the Holy Spirit then was poured out. As a result, His power filled that room and those who were gathered were filled with the Spirit and as a byproduct, spoke in a spiritual language or another tongue. Now, I just want to affirm four things before I look at the five major points. Number one, spiritual language is not an emphasis of North Way. Now, understand what I'm saying here. What I mean by this is that we don't, you know, has the facility of speaking with tongues. We think that's an important thing as you'll see, but we're not going to, you know, check every person out and we're not making an emphasis. And we certainly don't distinguish between people based on that, according to, as I say, number four. The second thing, I definitely do not believe that spiritual language is necessary for salvation. It is not necessary. There are some who would teach, well, you can't really be filled with the Spirit. If you don't have the Spirit and you don't speak in tongues, you can't be saved. I don't believe that. The Bible teaches that. Spiritual language is not the required evidence for the fullness of the Spirit. This is one where some of you would debate me. And I'll get into a little bit more, but let me just say most of the scriptural evidence is that when the Spirit fills people, His overflow in our lives is manifested by the spiritual language for those who are open. I mean, that's the preponderance of the occasions, as I will chronicle here in the Bible. But to say that one cannot be filled unless they have that manifestation is to say something that the Bible does not clearly say. And I would probably be willing, not in this forum, but in a more personal one, to go through the various references if you'd like to on that. Finally, spiritual language is not a dividing line of acceptability. Certainly, please understand, if you don't have this understanding in your life or this experience in life, that does not mean you're any less welcome at all here. And because you do speak in tongues doesn't mean you're better or more mature than the next person. There are some very wonderfully mature people in the Lord who have not yet found the liberty of the spiritual language. I think it'd be great if they did, but they're still wonderfully mature in Christ. I think, as you'll see, I feel very strongly that the openness to the Spirit's fullness, and especially as the spiritual language relates, that opens us up to a lot of things. All right. Now, let me clarify one thing that's not really on this outline. I pretty much am going to presume here tonight that most of you have heard what I've had to say about how to be filled with the Spirit of God. And I preached a Sunday morning message three weeks ago on that. So if you weren't here, you can pick up the tape in the tape ministry. I think if you're not clear about that, then all the rest of tonight is going to be a little bit foggy in your mind. You're going to say, well, do I just go after this one gift? And the answer to that for me is distinctly no. See, the spiritual language is given as part of the package of walking in the fullness of the Spirit. If one is filled with the Spirit, one can expect to have a spiritual language and speak in tongues. So let me go ahead and just talk about these. And as I said, I'll stop after each section to give you a chance for questions. First of all, the spiritual language is biblical. That's the Greek. Actually, it's a transliteration. The lingua says to speak in languages. That's what it means is a manifestation, a manifestation or an unveiling is what that word means of the Holy Spirit. All those scriptures talk about that. And let me add to First Corinthians twelve ten also put twelve seven. It's a manifestation or an unveiling. In other words, when you experience this, this gift of speaking another language, it's an evidence. It's a manifestation. It's it's an unveiling of the spirit of God in your life. There is no firm evidence that tongues ever appeared before Pentecost. Did you know that? Although much prophecy of this phenomenon was fulfilled at this time, turn to Mark 16. I want you to see we could talk, of course, about Joel and Isaiah, but look at Mark 16 in the Gospels. And I want you to see one other prophet that talked about the fact that tongues would be a part of the New Testament experience. Verse 17 of Mark 16. And these signs will accompany those who believe in my name. They will drive out demons. They will speak in new tongues right there. That's the Lord Jesus Christ. So. From the lips of the Savior himself, we see a verification of this, the validity of this experience. Now, let us see in the book of Acts tongues are mentioned as evidence of the spirit's reception. We've just read Acts two. There are a number of other references there. Another one, just just to give you an idea how common this was, turn to Acts chapter ten. And we read there in verse 44. Of course, Peter is speaking. He's just had a vision. He's gone to the Gentiles, the home of Cornelius. And here's what it says. Verse 44. While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message. The circumcised believers or the Jews who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles. Why? Why did they think that? Verse forty six. For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God. So the Jewish believers took it as a sign or evidence of the Holy Spirit's being poured out that the Gentiles that they were with began to speak in tongues. Now, what's really fascinating about this passage, by the way, is that this is one of the the few passages where that experience happened before they were literally baptized in water. So, I mean, folks, I've said this before. Never put God in a box. I mean, if he wants to play with your head, he'll do it. And people who try to put God in a neat little theological box that they can manipulate are usually real surprised. God got an A in theology and he can make it happen any way that you least expect it. All right. Letter D in the Corinthian church. Notice this. Even though it's biblical, tongues can be abused if not in love and in order. But Paul does not relegate the gift to emotionalism or human phenomenon. You know, clearly a number of us here were. Is that all I have to say now? Flip it back now. You're not being good students here. Some of you probably were told in your early church days, you know, stay away from people who speak in tongues. They're just emotional cripples. They need a crutch. And I have to say, you know, I've been in places where people were carrying on babbling in tongues and it was an emotional circus. I have seen that. But that does not invalidate the fact that God also gave us the spiritual language for some very specific positive purposes, which I'm going to talk about in a moment. And it's just like with counterfeit money. I mean, just because people out there, you know, running their basement presses and putting up the $20 bills doesn't mean I'm not going to spend the real thing. And you shouldn't be robbed from something God wanted to give you just because someone's abusing it. Now, here in our church, you know, I'll just pause here and say we've not had a lot of people, you know, create a big stir by abusing the spiritual language, but we've had a little bit. And over the years, you know, we've had to sit down with some people and say, you know, it just wasn't appropriate when you, you know, interrupted everything that was happening and started blurting out in your tongue. And we've talked to people about that. And in some cases they've received, in some cases they've rebuked us and left and went to another church to sow disorder. Okay, now you can turn the page. He encourages manifestation, this is Paul, in the proper way, always pointing to edifying the church. And I'm going to talk a little bit about the difference here. In fact, number three, he underscores the benefits of private exercise, speaking to God. And here's a key distinction that everyone needs to get. I am firmly convinced there are two kinds of spiritual languages in the New Testament. Are you? One of them is given as a gift to be used in the edification of the body of believers. The other is a praise or prayer language that is God word. So the spiritual language, it's your prayer language that some would call it, is for God in you just to communicate. It's really usually to exalt God and to glorify God. The gift of tongues, as we'll look at in a minute, is given for the body. Now let's check this out. Turn to 1 Corinthians 14, 2. And where we get into trouble here, at least I did for about two years, but I'm slow. Maybe you'll get it tonight. The Bible goes back and forth. It jumps back and forth between the spiritual language of prayer and the gift of tongues. And this is where, you know, unless you're a little bit sharp, you're going to get, you could get confused. Now pick up the verbs here, and they're in the exhortative kind of tense. Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy, which we'll talk about. For anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. Indeed, no one understands him. He utters mysteries or revelations with his spirit. But everyone who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement, and comfort. We'll come back to that verse. Look at verse 2. Anyone who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men, but to God. There, you should see very distinctly, that's the prayer language. Speaking to God. Speaking to God. A mystery in the spirit. Anyone here tonight that's been liberated to speak in your prayer language, you know the joy of just being able to, you know, to move out of the natural and out of the things in your mind and just begin to exalt the Lord in your spiritual language. It's just a, it's a wonderful freedom. It's not weird. It's, in fact, seems very natural. You see, our regenerated spirit, you believe you have a body, soul, and spirit, don't you? Well, your regenerated spirit, wants to articulate. And that spirit speaks through the body he's been placed in. And that's how this happens. Now, let's pause there, as I said I would. Any questions about this part of the outline? Any things? Don't try to, if you have an honest question, I'd love to answer it. If you want to just try to stump the pastor, you probably can. But I'm happy to pause right now. Any questions on the the biblical nature of this experience that maybe somebody didn't make real clear or anything you'd like me to pursue a little bit? Don't be embarrassed. Let me say one funny thing. You know, people always think that they're the only one that has this question. And normally, you know, there's about 50 people who have the same question. So, you know, yes. I have a lot of friends, and I don't personally believe this, but I have a lot of friends that believe that tongues were only for the time of the apostles. Is there a good scripture to get to them to tell them that? Oh, depends on how good a friend they are. Yeah. She said, Stacey said that she has a number of friends that believe that tongues were just for the apostolic age and that they ceased for this age. And do we have any good scriptures that we could beat them with that would help them to understand that? I'm just kidding. See, that was a good question. And the only one that comes to my mind is 1 Corinthians 13, verse 8. It says, love never fails, but where there are prophecies, they will cease. Where there are tongues, they will be stilled. And where there is knowledge, it will pass away. Okay. So I always, you know, to me, it says that until prophecy ceased and knowledge is no more, tongues are going to continue. And I believe, you know, very clearly that up until the time that Jesus comes back, we're going to, you know, we have limited understanding, but everything just keeps functioning. And someone might be able to help you with that. If you have some better scriptures, see Stacey afterwards, she'll be, yes. Okay. One is asking the question, is it my spirit in me or is it the Holy Spirit? And, well, that's a good question. I mean, who is the spirit that's in you? See, really? Yeah. The Holy Spirit is really, you've been joined with that spirit. So really it's one in the same. That regenerated spirit is born of God. So really it is the Holy Spirit. You're right. Speaking through the spirit that now he has made alive. All right. We have a husband who couldn't be here that has a question. This is going to be a tough one. All right. This is still on the biblical part because I've got a lot more to, I might come back. All right. Well, I'll come back to you if I don't. Okay. No, David, I'm not taking your questions. You're going to go ahead. Would it be possible to fake, you know, like speaking in tongues? Okay. The question is, would it be possible to fake speaking in tongues? Absolutely. Sure. Okay. Let me ask you this. If, um, now the gifts of the spirit, forget love, joy, peace, warmth, suffering, gentleness, those are the fruits, right? I mean, the fruit. Now, can you, um, can you have a gift of the spirit, you know, like for instance, like speaking in tongues, but yet not have like the fruits of the spirit? Oh, sure. The question is, could you have the gifts of the spirit flowing like a river and not have the fruits of the spirit? And the sad answer is what? Yeah. And does that make sense? Well, sure. I mean, I think, you know, we're, we're all being, we're growing along the line with God. I mean, you know, we're on a continuum and unfortunately it doesn't all come in one package. Okay. I think there's some people, many people I know in our church, very wonderfully mature, fruit bearing kinds of Christians with great character, but are a little, you know, just a little thin and the gifts haven't really come to understand that. No, that's two questions. Should we give them one more or not? Well, here's the other one. Now, if now the Trinity was always in existence, right? Yes. Now that was it. No. But so then, I mean, the Holy spirit did not come, could not indwell a person until Pentecost or until Christ died because he sent the comforter back. That's true. I would concur that. Okay. No, I mean, how, how, how did Abraham and Moses and other prophets, how did they prophesy? Yeah. The question is if the Holy spirit really didn't indwell anyone until Jesus poured out the spirit, which is basically true. How did, how did it happen in the old Testament? And the basic consensus there is that in that whole came upon, all right, the difference is coming upon versus indwelling. And when he came upon, it was, it was God breathing in that individual. And by the way, there's a great study and I hope I brought the book in. If I, uh, would you open that bag there, hon? There's a great book. Uh, I just stumbled across. I want to recommend this to the studious ones among us on a lot of this. It's called the gift of prophecy in the new Testament and today. And, uh, he talks about the, uh, the differences and the similarities and it's, it's not, you know, it's not over your head. It's good. Really. If you're really into that. Wayne Grudem. Okay. No, no. I mean, well, but it was, I think the spirit was still coming upon all right, let's go on. We'll come back if we have time. Number two, the spiritual language is relevant. Okay. Principally the spiritual language is an enablement that heightens the reality of our faith in the Lord Jesus. And I want to underscore this. Please don't think that if, you know, if you start pursuing the spirit fullness and the gifts of the spirit as an end, you're missing it. Okay. The purpose is, is to release the fullness of Jesus in your life. And really most, this, this is a real heavy criticism of, you know, anti charismatic type people that say, well, you know, you're just into the Holy Spirit. And you know, the Bible says that the spirit will glorify Jesus. Most people that I know that have become spirit filled people and are released in the fullness of the spirit are very Jesus exalting people. I mean, they, they just, you know, they, their lives kind of overflow, uh, the fullness of, of the spirit and exalt Jesus along the way. I, you know, I rarely, I mean, I think that's really an unfounded, I think that's a criticism that they made up in their head more than one that they've seen for the most part. Um, it is a meaningful and has profound transforming effect. There is an increased confidence in our ability to communicate. And I, I just want to say folks, uh, maybe I'd refer to this later, but how many of you have trouble controlling your tongue? Okay. The rest of you who didn't put your hand up or just, are you having difficulty controlling your honesty? And I have to say, uh, when the Lord allows that miracle on your tongue, it's, it's sort of a, it's sort of a, you know, he, he chose the place where most of us are terribly vulnerable and terribly weak. And I know when I first, and I remember I could, you know, it was like I could, I could paint, if I was an art, I could paint the picture of the time that I first began to, to speak the first syllables of my prayer language from that moment. I mean, I wasn't radically changed, but I understood how God wanted, I understood what it meant, you know, to be spirit controlled. And by the way, that is a synonym for a spirit filled, a spirit controlled person. And it, and it's really helped me a lot. I mean, I still say dumb things on occasion, but, you know, a lot less than I used to, but anyhow, that's a, it's a very important little thing to notice. Um, answers to hunger for supernatural power in the world. And you see, once the spirit fullness is moving in your life, you do find yourself open to a lot more. I mean, you're anticipating the miraculous a lot more. Let's go on and do the third one too, before we suffer questions again. The spiritual language is, let's say it, who among us has not yearned for greater ways in which to praise our magnificent Lord. I mean, I mean, I love to sing. I do. I mean, I sing whether we're here or out. And I mean, I just sing a lot and, and I, you know, how about right now when you do on a day like this, you're driving down, uh, you know, route nine, 10 or something and just exalt, I mean, praising, but the, the spiritual language is a way to utter things to God that, that just transcend your understanding. And it's another way to praise him. And he just kind of, I mean, this is where the idea of, uh, ecstatic utterance comes in. It's kind of like, Ooh, you know, I don't know how to say this. Now this isn't, shouldn't be that weird. Have you ever, I mean, when you fell in love, assuming that, you know, most of us have at one time, I mean, sometimes you just run out of ways. All these husbands and wives are looking at me like, yeah, right. Okay. I better go on. As, as tongues accompany the outpouring of the spirit as the fulfillment of Christ's exaltation, we are affirming the exaltation of the right hand of the father, number B or letter B. Spiritual language enlarges our capacity to communicate with our father. Um, turn to Romans 8, 26, very familiar to most of you, but let's look at it from the perspective here of a further communication tool that we're given. Okay. In the same way, the spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the spirit himself, there you are, the spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the spirit because the spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will. One thing you can know for sure, if you come to God and you begin to pour out in your spiritual language, and you know, sometimes I find in praise and sometimes have you ever had the experience when, when, you know, you've had a burden and you just didn't know how to pray? That's a wonderful time to pray in your prayer language. I mean, I have a friend right now that's going through a real difficult personal struggle. And I mean, I don't really know, you know, all the details, but I just know it's real difficult. And he asked me to pray for him. I can, you know, I can say, Lord, well, you know, touch Tom's life and so on and so on and so on. But boy, I can really pray a deep prayer for my spirit. And I even, have you ever had the experience of having the emotion come after you've prayed that way? It's kind of like the spirit lets you know the emotion of that which you have prayed as you're involved in that way. I don't have time, but you know, the Bible says many different times praying in the spirit, praying in the spirit. And people argue, I mean, I have whole books on this subject. What does it mean to pray in the spirit? Well, you know, people who don't believe in the prayer language say, well, that just means that you, you know, you've really come to understand what the will of God is. And so you pray as the, as the will of God has been revealed to you. I think it's at least, it's at least praying with your prayer language, but it's even more than that. It's embracing the wholeness of God's purpose as he reveals it to you many times through his word. But very often also as you pray in the spirit, God will help you to understand what it is you're praying for. I've had times when I've prayed in the spirit, when God has shown me what it was I was praying for at another time. Have you ever had that? I've prayed in the spirit, didn't know what it was about. And later on, let me give you an illustration. This was a flip-flop of that. When I went to India, one night stood out as the most horrendous night of the whole trip. And you know, there's like 13 and a half hours time difference from India and where I was. And we were traveling this horrendous road. And I, if you weren't here when I told the story of that, I mean, you know, we're talking about power lines on the road, trees down, there was a cyclone, which is like a hurricane, animals wandering, you know, these big lorries. And I mean, it was probably one of the most frightening experiences in my life. And when I got back and I was recounting this to some of the people who were praying for me, one person said, well, did anything happen? And they told me the date that they had been awakened a little bit early in the morning to pray. And when I figured it all out on the clock, it was exactly the time that I was sitting in the car and I had a jacket over my head praying because I didn't know what else to do. I said, if I keep looking at this road, you know, I'm probably going to lose my mind. And that person had been praying for me in the spirit at that time, didn't know how to pray, but God had, you know, I believe really answered that prayer. Okay, well, let's go on. Just for the sake of time, we have a God-given means of building our spirit. Look at Jude 20. Real quickly, let's go turn to Revelation if you're not familiar and flip back one page. Revelation 20, I'm sorry, G20. How do you build, how do you want to be a stronger Christian? Look at this verse. But you, dear friends, are you there? But you, dear friends, build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit. Or one translation says, build yourself up in your most holy faith as you pray in the Holy Spirit. As you learn to pray in the spirit, you can build yourself, you can literally strengthen your inner man. Okay, the word build is, you know, the word that means edify in the scripture, or to build up, to strengthen. All right, and I talked about having your tongue under control. One last thing, the objectivity of the spiritual language, you can flip over, releases you from the bondage to feelings. In other words, when it comes to this issue of the fullness of the spirit, some people say, well, I'm not sure if I was really filled with the spirit or not, and I don't really feel much different, and I'm not sure. And I had a young man talk to me last Saturday evening service, and I don't know if he's here tonight, but he said, you know, I just didn't know, and I still don't. See, once the spiritual language starts flowing, feelings don't really play a whole lot anymore. You just know, I mean, you're just able to be released, and it's a very wonderful, reassuring kind of thing, because all of us folks wonder and doubt and fear. I mean, we do. Am I really spirit-filled? Is it really happening to me? All right, quickly, any questions here? All right, Jay? Two quick questions. Is speaking in tongues something that comes over you, or is it something that you just speak, believing that you're making sense to God? Okay, the question is, and I'm sure it's a common one, Jerry, is speaking in tongues something that just kind of starts coming over you, or do you kind of just start making it up? Is that what you said, trusting that God will make sense of it for you, which is a good way to say it? And then, secondly, when you're praying for something specific, does it just kind of come, again, kind of good, right? Do you make it up with your mind, and then move it? Okay, remember, the spiritual language is a manifestation of the Holy Spirit within you. I want to say that the spiritual language comes from within, okay? I mean, it bubbles up. Jesus said you're going to have streams of living water. They're going to flow out from you, so it's from within. I mean, it's not, it doesn't know. I have known people, I'm sure some of you have, too, that, you know, they, God just so landed on them that they really just started it. I mean, it was just like a, you know, they didn't even know what hit them. I don't think that's normative. I think it's much more normative for us to kind of present our bodies as living sacrifices, and then by faith, Lord, you know, as we sense the Spirit on our lives and by faith receive that fullness, and that's another dimension of this teaching, we just kind of launch out a little bit. We just, I mean, I did that. That's the way I first entered my spiritual language experience, and you think, man, is this dumb. I'm making it. How many here just, you know, that's reassuring. How many here first thought you were making it up? Okay, see that? Now, I'm not going to ask you how many think you still are, okay? I'm not going to ask you that, but it is. You get God, and part of it to me is God just, you know, He wants you, folks, this whole thing is about being a little child, see?
