Receiving Prophetic Ministry

As I was praying about tonight, and maybe you read North Way Notes and thought I was going to talk about your gifts, the Lord nudged my heart in this fashion. How many of you ended the three-day prayer conference, since about 95% of you had your hand up, with questions? Anyone have any questions? No? Well, good. Let's go home then. We're in good shape. I had some I wanted to sort through, and I think all of us need to deal with how God wants to grow you in the matter of prophecy and me. I'm delighted tonight that you're here tonight expecting God, just like you were last week, because the same Holy Spirit's here tonight. The same Spirit of God is going to be among us tonight. But I want to share a little bit tonight about prophetic ministry, and I'm going to need about four, maybe six men, to help pass out these outlines right now. You want to take that far section over there, bro? Start halfway, if you would. When you get one of these outlines, you can write on them, and it's sort of just an overview of what I'm going to say tonight, and perhaps give you something to study a little bit later and look up the scriptures. I think we have enough for everyone to have one, and I think it'll help us tonight to fit some of these things into perspective. Turn to 1 Corinthians 14 while your papers are coming, please. For some reason you're getting Passover, put your hand up and someone will cover you. The back couple rows need them, guys. 1 Corinthians 14. Hallelujah. Okay. Now, just hold on to the sheets. You don't need to read them, actually. It'll probably just help you follow along. If you try to read them, it may just confuse you a little bit because I let a lot of things out of there, so you have to listen. I've done this enough to know. All right. Look at 1 Corinthians 14. I want us to pray together. Would you just right now do something for me? Put your hand over your heart right now. Pray for your own heart to be soft tonight to hear what the Lord would say to you. Oh, Father. Lord, the worst thing that could happen to us would be to develop hardness of heart, to feel like we know it all, God. We just pray tonight our hearts would be soft and that you would lose something in us, Lord, of a prophetic mantle that we as a church, Lord, would grow in the ministry of prophecy in our own lives and in our church. Lord, we thank you tonight for the power that's resident in us by the Holy Spirit. Bless us tonight, Lord. Give me the words to speak, Spirit of God. I'm trusting you alone to communicate now. Give each of these beloved ones ears to hear in Jesus' name. Amen. 1 Corinthians 14.1 Follow the way of love and eagerly desire spiritual gifts, especially the gift of prophecy. Would you say those last five words? Especially the gift of prophecy. If there's anyone here tonight that needs any further encouragement to tune in on what I'm going to share tonight, I pray this scripture will help you to see the Bible takes seriously the issue of prophecy. The Bible says, this is Paul speaking, earnestly desire the spiritual gifts and especially that you may prophesy. Now, most of us come from church backgrounds that are one of two cuts. Either the one cut would be all prophecy is ceased and we aren't really interested in trying to make up something because when God finished the canon of scripture, He was done talking. How many of you came from a church like that or some version of that? Some of you won't put your hand up for either of these because you don't know what your church believed or you didn't go to one. Number two, the only prophecy that you ever heard in your church was the, And God will get you, my sister prophecy. I should point over here. And God will get you, my sister. Alright? The judgment prophecy, the condemning gloom and doom. How many of you had that in your background at some point? Alright. Look at that. Many of you. Maybe the third, if you will, are the churches that say, sure, prophecy is for today, but it's really preaching. Preaching is prophecy. That's sort of the, that's the message that you'll hear on the radio certain hours, like nine o'clock in the morning. Prophecy is for today, but it's preaching. But unfortunately, the Bible uses two other words for preaching, which means the good news and the other, which means to proclaim. And clearly, as you read the New Testament, prophecy is for today, beloved. You've got to exegete backwards to get away from it. I just want to tell you that. And if you're from a place, now, let me, let me say something. For all those of you who are saying, you know, this church is really on the brink of being too much for me. Well, we love you and we understand that. I understand what, I didn't start here. I started, most of you know my background, as a Roman Catholic. And then United Presbyterian. I mean, I tried everything. And then I went to an independent seminary. And so I know what it's all, you know, all the different things are like. But see, the Holy Spirit has me on a journey. And I can tell you now, after 22 years of following Jesus, I'm closer now than I've ever been to Jesus. And so if you're here and you've got questions, it's okay. Don't be in any hurry to try to get everything. Just let God massage you and love you and care for you. He's here. He'll take care of you. You don't need to be afraid about that. Now, let me touch some things that are very, very important in this matter of prophecy. What do you do when you hear a prophecy? How do you know if it's of God or not? What do you do in response to that? What happens if it doesn't happen? Any of you ever ask those questions? You see, if you have a hungry heart, and most of you do, you wouldn't be here on Wednesday night, you're very susceptible to getting involved in a lot of things that sound good, but you're not sure if they are. It's only the people who are really hungry for God that are going to be open to these kinds of things. Anyhow, the rest of the people won't even pay attention to them. But many, many major ministries today will tell you they were led at key points in their life by prophetic word. Prophetic word is very important. It's very important in the life of this church. God told us in our first couple of weeks together that He would send us as many people as we could care for. There's been a prophetic word in our church, and He's been doing it. When our care network breaks down, He stops sending people. It's just a prophetic word over us. The more we learn to care for, that's why we're starting to pray in the mornings now for God to give us the capacity to enfold, care for, enfold 20 new people every week. Because He's sending us more than that every week to care for. Now, in the Old Testament, there are over 500 references to prophecy. And in the New Testament, there are over 200. Don't ever think that the Old Testament was the one that helped talk about prophecy, and the New Testament doesn't really talk about it very much. I just read from 1 Corinthians 14 where Paul says, Above every other gift, above healing, above a word of wisdom or word of knowledge, or all this, desire prophecy. You see, beloved, hear me on this. God doesn't want it to be once every six months that someone with a prophetic gift comes through and we all get encouraged. God wants it... Could you imagine a Wednesday night where the prophetic mantles on the church and the same kind of things that were happening... See, it wouldn't be necessary to have a three-hour prophecy line if we were all functioning in our prophetic gift. God bless you. You know, those of you who waited in line for three hours to get a word, I mean, it blessed my heart to see the hunger in you. But it also perplexed me that we don't know how to lay hold of God enough that we can minister that word. How many of you want just to be able to come together at any time and hear God? Well, that's what we're here to do. We want to learn that. Now, the Old Testament words for prophecy, I've listed them here, inherent in the words, the Bible words are so important. If you don't know Hebrew and Greek, you can't fully appreciate the words, but I've put down here the rough definitions, and you can always get a concordance or a lexicon and look up the definitions more fully. There are five words in Hebrew. Rohat means a seer, one who sees, like a visionary, the message of God. Chosah means a seer, which is the cognitive or visionary perception. In other words, he knows. He doesn't necessarily see a vision, but he knows what God is saying. Another word for prophecy is the word masah, which means a burden. See, the prophets often said, I had the burden of God on me. I had to do this. I mean, Jeremiah, when you read the book of Jeremiah, he had a burden for his people because the prophecy came upon him like that. Nabah means to prophesy. There's over 400 usages of that word alone, and nataf means to drop, to fall as drops of rain. Now, the first three words here, beloved, just catch this. The first three words have to do with how you receive it, as a vision, as a perception, or as a burden. If you're listening to my words, you'll hear Dale use some of these same words. He'd say, I have a picture, or he'd say, I just sense from God something, and he used those very words. The first three words have to do with how you receive it. The last two words, nabah and nataf, have to do with how you deliver it. Okay? Nabah means to prophesy, as to bubble up, to gust forth, to pour out. That talks about the human element coming forth out of you, where nataf talks about the divine element. God falling upon you as drops of rain. Listen, in every prophecy, in every prophet, in everyone exercising the gift of prophecy, there is the human and the divine. And we'll see why that's so important later. There's the human and the divine element in everyone. Every prophetic word. That's what these words teach us. That's why I left that paragraph. There's a human and a divine element in every prophecy. Now, the New Testament word to prophesy, there's just one word, propheto, which means, write this down, it means P-R-O is the prefix, which means for, F-O-R-E, or forth, F-O-R-T-H. And the second half of the word, P-A-T, P-A-T, F, and, oh, it's just the verb ending. F, P-A-T means to speak or to say. So, it's to foretell or forth tell. To prophesy in the New Testament means to foretell or forth tell. To foretell means predictive prophecy. Back in the Olympic Games here in 1984 in Los Angeles, thousands of Christians came from YWAM. Didn't you all go out to that? Well, I've got a testimony right here. You can verify what I'm going to share. Was it not true during that time that a very well-known prophecy began to circulate in Los Angeles that a major earthquake was going to hit that city during the Olympic Games as an indication of a judgment of God? And, I mean, I'm talking about it came from a... They had a day... They had it down to the day that it was going to fall. It came from a fairly well-known source so that people all through Southern California were, you know... Yeah, just... Well, this is really God. I mean, we've only got six days until the earthquake when we're all going to die kind of thing. It was a major thing. Turned out not to be true, I guess. You're still here, right. So, there's foretelling. Now, there are also prophecies which we could probably point to. Foretelling prophecies. In fact, beloved, you want a fascinating study of your Bible. A lot of Bibles have this now. You can see the prophecies that the Old Testament prophets foretold that came to pass in explicit detail. I mean, you just read about the Lord Jesus. Where He was going to be born. How He was going to be born. Where He was going to live. How He was going to die. In every detail. It's fulfilled, right. I mean, it's a fascinating study. And even in the New Testament, prophecy is fulfilled right to the detail. Agabus came in the 11th or 12th chapter of the Book of Acts and said there was going to be tremendous famine in Judah. And His words came true. And that's when we read about, remember, in 2 Corinthians about the saints blessing those back in Jerusalem with gifts because of their poverty. That was because of that famine. Now what does that tell you about the prophecies that have not been fulfilled, church? That one day they shall be fulfilled. One day God's word will prove true in every man alive. Because prophecy is always true. So prophecy may be defined as a declaration of a message from God. Not known by natural means, but by divine revelation. Let me say that again. Prophecy may be defined as a declaration of a message from God. Not known by natural means, but by divine revelation. Including predictive elements. Predictive elements as well as anointed proclamation. One more time. Prophecy may be defined as a declaration of a message from God. Not known by natural means, but by divine revelation. Including predictive elements as well as anointed proclamation. Dale preached on Friday night of the prayer of travail. How many of you heard that message, the prayer of travail? Now you can justifiably say that both that message and the ministry that followed it were prophetic. One was illumination that God gave him concerning the prayer of travail, which he delivered in anointed fashion as a message of teaching. The other was specific ministry. Words of wisdom and knowledge, prophetic ministry over a number of people. Now, Roman numeral two. As prophecy and scripture is more than just human words, or rather God's words, we know that there is an inherent authority and power operating within them. Now beloved, this is important. How many of you had a word over your life? You were a minister too. Look at that, most of you. I want you to know something. God's word, if it's truly God's word, carries in it the power to perform what it is spoken. Remember that. The very speaking of the word, if it's of God, has in it the power to bring it to pass. You can read about this in Jeremiah 1.9. I put my words in you, the Lord says to Jeremiah, and they will be fulfilled. It's going to happen because they're God's word. God's word is living and active and sharper than a two-edged sword. Ezekiel 37, remember the story of the dry bones? And what did God say to tell Ezekiel to do? He said, speak to those bones, and what happened to them? In speaking to them, in this prophetic vision, they took form and began to take shape, and then they became alive, and the Spirit of the Lord breathed upon them. Praise the Lord. So prophecy is causative in the sense that when it's spoken of God, it has inherent in it the power to bring it to pass. Interestingly, in the New Testament, a good illustration of that is in 1 Timothy 4.14, where the Bible says, Timothy received by the laying on of hands a gift. Now the word, by the laying on of hands, is literally the preposition dia, which means through. In other words, Paul is saying, through my hands, you received a gift. Through my hands, you received a gift. Literally, it was transferred. You see, carried in it, the prophetic word over Timothy, carried in it the power to bring it to pass. And then he later says to him, stir up this gift that was given to you. Now beloved, if you had hands laid on you, if you had a word over your life, then inherent in it is the power to bring it to pass. But, look down there at the bottom of this sheet, there's also a conditional aspect of every prophecy. Conditional aspect of every prophecy. How many of you know that just because something was said, does not mean it's going to come to pass? It was prophesied over our church that we would have a powerful ministry of deliverance to the entire city of Pittsburgh. How many of you want that? You want to see our church. You know, we've been talking among ourselves, what does deliverance mean? And you know, deliverance is so much more than we tend to think of just, well, I'm going to get a few demons off a few drug addicts or something. I mean, Jesus' whole ministry, according to Luke 4, was a ministry, he was anointed by the Holy Spirit to set captives free. I think all of us qualify for deliverance. And so, you see, I want that ministry for our church. You want to be part of that ministry. But beloved, just because he spoke it, it isn't going to happen necessarily. It's going to require a conditional participation by us. And what's going to happen? Look, in Jonah 3, I'm not turning to these scriptures for the sake of time tonight. But in Jonah 3, verse 4, the Lord says, Yet forty days in Nineveh shall be overthrown. The Lord spoke that through Jonah. That's the prophecy. In forty days, Nineveh is going to be overthrown. You all know the story of Jonah. What happened? Well, of course, we know about Jonah running from that word. He didn't want to be a prophet. So he went and took a three-day pass in the belly of a whale. And it's just full, by the way, that whole book. By the way, let me tell you this. Prophets can be prophetic not just with their words, but with their lives. Jonah's life was a prophetic life. And what he did when he went back to Nineveh and preached was he literally withdrew the judgment of God from that city because what did the city do? It repented. Let me say this. There is valid judgment prophecy today. There is a valid place for prophecies of judgment today. Brother David Wilkerson is probably the one that's speaking this more clearly and dramatically than anyone else. Would you all basically agree with that? I mean, his book, Set the Trumpet to Thy Mouth, is a very, very heavy prophecy of judgment on this country. But, beloved, a true prophet of God, including Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, and so on, God does not desire destruction. What God wants to do, He is warning the people that unless they repent, this is what's going to happen. You see, prophecy is conditional. The condition in that case is hardness of heart, not unrepentance. And if that continues in our nation, then we very well may be judged by God. In fact, I'd say we will be. But my heart's desire is to call the nation to repentance through prayer. And I believe if our nation repents, God will forestall that judgment because His heart is not to destroy. How many of you have ever received a harsh word of prophecy over your life? Anyone? Put it up there, let me see. How many of you have been burned by a prophecy over your life at some point, a harsh word? You see, how you deal with that can have a great impact on succeeding years of your life. Some of us have had a negative prophecy like that and we got burned. I remember someone prophesied over me a while back, cancer in my family if I didn't do what God was telling me to do. That's right. I remember that. And you see, beloved, that's not God. And yet, some prophets in the world today, or so-called prophets, self-styled prophets, are extremely convincing. Extremely convincing. Because they can weave in all kinds of things. Many times they started on the right track and got off on the wrong. Alright, so anyhow, the conditional aspect of prophecy means that you've got to do something to bring it to pass. And we're going to talk about what that is in a few minutes. Alright, very quickly, because I want to give time for questions. The realms of prophecy. Roman numeral three. Turn your sheet over there. Now, prophecy can occur on three levels. Now, right here is where I want many of you, if the person next to you is not, just whack them right now. How come the wives always whack harder than the husbands do in that case? The reason I want you to catch this is because here is where many of us will enter into the prophetic realm. Most every teacher that I've studied will confirm what I'm going to share with you here, that there are three realms, or levels, of prophecy. The first one is the spirit of prophecy, which I believe is available to every Christian. How many of you had to be convinced that every Christian should speak in tongues? You need to be convinced of that, because you were taught that that was just a gift that a few had. Well, you're still in 1 Corinthians 14, and you already give up on that now. Still there. Look what Paul says in verse 5. Would you please? Can I read that for you? Verse 5, 1 Corinthians 14. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues. No, not me, God. I just was saying not do that myself. I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. So as much as you desire and delight in speaking in tongues, more than that, you should desire and delight to prophesy. Why? Because you're edifying the church, building up the church. How many of you left that weekend edified? You say, well, that's what God wants. He wants to edify the church. Now, let me confess something here. I recognize I'm very potentially opening up a tremendous... I don't know what I want to call it. I mean, cauldron of boiling things. I've also spent part of my ministry undoing negative and false prophecies. And so I'm cautious about this. I remember telling Carol from time to time, it almost is not worth it. Oh, but beloved, you see, when the word of the Lord comes, when you lay hold of a word of God for your life, it is worth it. It can change the whole course of your direction in your life. And so I'm... Thanks, Jack. I'm yearning that we as a church understand God's heart and His desire in this matter. Now, the first level then is the spirit of prophecy where the Bible says that the spirit of the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. Ever seen that verse? Revelation 19, 10. The testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy. You see, just take it at face value. Take it at face value. Don't over-spiritualize it. Your testimony of Jesus as Lord of your life, that's the self-same spirit of prophecy working in you. No man can call Jesus Lord except by the Holy Spirit, 1 Corinthians 12, 3. And so, you see, if you delight in Jesus, if you give testimony to Him, then the spirit of prophecy is moving in you, dwelling in you. What you simply need to do is learn how to lay hold of that. You need to learn how to get hold of what the spirit of prophecy is doing. Now, all men and women should at some time move into the prophetic dimension. And I believe that this simply comes by spending time with God. It simply comes the more time you spend with God, the more you begin to recognize the Holy Spirit whispering to you. Let me suggest something to you, all right? In your prayer language, sometime when you're alone with God, just you and God, begin to speak in your prayer language and then say, Holy Spirit, now I'm going to wait for you to interpret that back to me. Try that sometime. You say, well, I just started thinking about my house needing cleaning or my boss that yelled at me. Well, you need to get quiet for a while. I want you to know that it takes a good 15 minutes for most of us just to phase out. You just can't walk into God and say, I want something right now and walk back out. He's not a fast food, spiritual food vendor. But, beloved, it's very biblical to do what I'm saying. Speak in your prayer language. And if you don't have a prayer language, we'll pray for you tonight if you want to be released in the Holy Spirit tonight. Speak in your prayer language and then say, Holy Spirit, interpret back to me what I just prayed. And I just want to just encourage you, the thoughts that come to your mind, just receive them as from the Holy Spirit. And then just let God begin to fashion. And you'll find, beloved, you say, well, that's awful mystical. I can't do that. Church, we've got to do that. We've got to learn to do that. We've got to learn to hear God speaking to our hearts. Do you know what will happen to you if your day is simply a matter of listening to what the Holy Spirit's telling you to do and doing it? Somewhere in the Bible I read that that's what Jesus did. I only do the things I see my Father doing. I only say the things my Father gives me to say. You want to know what keeps us from moving in a power release? We add so much to what God's already... He's telling us this and we're over here doing all this because we're so busy. So the spirit of prophecy is the entry level that we all should be... How many of you want that tonight? All right. Hallelujah. Hold your hand up there. Heavenly Father, I want to pray right now. And with every hand that's up, I agree right now, tonight, Father. I agree in my faith with theirs that, Lord, you're going to begin to loose the spirit of prophecy upon them, Father God. They're going to begin to discern your voice and know how and when to speak, O God, by the grace that's in them. In Jesus' name. Amen. Now, some here tonight have the gift of prophecy. Whereas the spirit of prophecy comes upon us, the gift of prophecy is resident by the Holy Spirit's choosing. 1 Corinthians 12, verse 10. The Holy Spirit gives severally as He wills. Some have the gift of prophecy. You are often prophetic. There are often times when you're saying, I know the Lord's saying this. The gift of prophecy. Dale Gentry had a gift of prophecy. He can move in that gift. He doesn't have to wonder if it's going to be there. You ever wonder, how could he stand up here tonight and say, I know God's going to do something great. Because he has a gift. How many of you know when you have a gift and you're confident in it, you know it's going to work? Part of our problem is we're not confident in the gifts that we have. The gift of prophecy is all through the Scripture. 1 Corinthians 14, verse 3. It tells us that He who prophesies speaks to men for their strengthening, encouragement, and comfort. I'm going to talk a little bit about some of the purposes of that. The gift of prophecy encourages and strengthens and comforts. Third level of prophecy is the office of a prophet. The ascension gifts in Ephesians 4.11 are apostle, prophet, evangelist, pastor, and teacher. The prophetic office is given to the church as a whole. That is, to me, an indication that not just churches have prophetic office, not just local churches, but the whole body of Christ. See, Dale can move here, under the authority of his own local church, come to our church and minister in that prophetic office under the covering of our elders. If our elders did not agree with him, then he would be out of order to come in and prophesy. But you see, it's given to the church. It's given to the church to edify and to build up. The prophetic office comes through recognized giftedness. You see, once you watch a person prophesy, months after months... You see, Dale didn't just walk up one morning and say, Well, I'm a prophet. If anyone ever comes up and says, They need to tell you what they are, they're in trouble. And you're in trouble if you listen to them. Right? A proven ministry is what we're all after here, folks. A ministry that says, This just demonstrates itself for months and years. Then it's acknowledged. That's a safeguard. That's a safeguard that God's given us. Now, what are the elements of that prophetic word? I'm skipping over a lot here. I recognize it. I wrote down five things. Let me just say this about an office of prophet. He's anointed with authority. You sense authoritativeness when the person is moving in a prophetic office. He's effectual. I should say he or she. Because there are prophetesses in the scriptures, in the New Testament. They're effectual. Their words come to pass. Number three, they are commissioned by God. In other words, they know that God has sent them. Dale would have told us, I know God has given me this ministry. And I could tell you tonight how he came into it after years of being with God. It's interesting how God... Let me just share with a little... I'm sure he would confirm this. How many of you know when something bad happens to you, you think sometimes God's out of the scene? Dale went... He got to a point in his own life where his church was so heavy on him that he began to crack up under the stress of it. In fact, what he did for some of our pastors' meetings was to talk about stress. That's his other ministry, dealing with pastors and stress. And for seven years, Dale labored to come out of this stress that was on his life. But do you know what he did? In the midst of that, he realized that he had to either change, look to be a real negative, a real downer, began to be a really positive thing in his life. Just receive that. If you're going through a bad time right now, God wants to use it for good. God wants to use it. Just give him praise in the midst of it, and he's going to use it for you. Prophecy can come one of two ways. It can be illuminative or informative. Let me touch on this real quickly. The opposite of a prophet is also... He's a receptor of revelation. In other words, he is continually receiving revelation. He's a receptor of that. And number five, on occasion, not every time, but on occasion, he's predictive. Thus saith the Lord, this will happen now, or by such and such a time. Agabus said that Paul was going to go to Jerusalem, in Rome, rather, and be put in chains. Acts 21, 10, and 11. All right. Another function. It's illuminative and informative. An illuminative prophetic word is one which brings the principles or the propositions of the Scripture alive. Someone here received a word, to fret not. Fret not thyself. Now, where is that in the Bible, somebody? Psalm 37, verse 4, right? And that brother received that word of Scripture illumined to his life. You see, most prophecy is illuminative. It's taking the biblical principles that we already know, and making them alive to us. Okay, now, that's really important, okay? It's very important, you see that. It isn't usually something that's going to come around and just be radically new. But it's the Word of God. That's why the more you soak in the Word, the more prophetic you become. You're giving God something to work with. The second kind of prophecy is informative. That is to say, it's specific information regarding personal needs. Now, some of you received words that he had no way of knowing, that weren't biblical in nature, but just said to your life, this is something that's going to happen to you. This is something that you've been needing, and God's going to do this. I heard a story the other day about a man, well-known national ministry, you would know him if I mentioned. He was flying in an airplane, going on his way out to the west coast, and when he landed, I believe it was in Denver, Colorado, the Holy Spirit spoke to his heart and said, this plane is going to crash. Well, he sat there and said, gosh, was that me? You've never done this, of course. Was that me? Was that the devil? Was that really God? Ever ask yourself that when you've heard the Lord? The honest people are going like this. Sure, we all do. And he said, now think about his dilemma. He thought it was the Holy Spirit. If he missed God, he was going to be late for his speaking engagement on the west coast, and have to explain, well, the Holy Spirit told me the plane was going to wreck. And if it did, he'd be a man of God. Okay? But listen to what he did. He thought, well, even if it was the Holy Spirit, I can still pray. I can still lay hold. I can still avert the disaster through my prayer. And I can choose to commit myself to intercede, to stand in the gap for those on this flight. Which he did. Got on the plane, and successfully made the trip. You say, well, did they find something? Was there a bomb in the cargo bay? No one ever knew. That's the way God is sometimes, isn't it? Gee, that's sort of a bummer. I mean, it would have been so much more exciting if he'd found out that he was really right. He could have at least gotten blessed by the people, you know. Well, we had a prophet on our plane, and we didn't know. But some prophecy is very personally informative. How many of you have found that?
