Power For Living III, Come Holy Spirit We Need You

This message was presented by Pastor Jay Passavant of North Lake Christian Community on Sunday morning, March 15, 1987. Please be seated and would you please turn with me to John 16. John chapter 16. As I prepare to share this message with you, I want to begin by saying to you before I read the text for this morning, that I believe this is a very important message in the life of our church. I believe what God has put in my heart is something that every one of us needs to hear. It's not just a message for someone else, dear one, it's a message for you, particularly if you're a part of North Lake. If you're visiting today, I pray the message blesses you, but I'm speaking today to people who've called themselves a part of this church, because that's where God wanted me to go today with what I have to say. So often we hear a sermon, we hear a teaching, we hear a message, and we say, well that would be great, I wish Bob had heard that. I wish my wife had heard that. But the Lord is speaking to us today, every one of us here. From his word, he begins in verse 5 of chapter 16, the Gospel of John. Now I'm going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me where are you going. Because I have said these things, you are filled with grief. But I tell you the truth, it is for your good that I am going away. Unless I go away, the counselor will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you. And when he comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment, in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me. Dear ones, let me stop right there and say, the essence of sin in the world today is not the things that people do, it's the fact that they do not believe God. Let me say that again, because most of you are dealing with people who think that sin is what they do. Sin is what they don't do. They don't believe God. They don't believe his word. They don't believe that he's true. That's the essence of sin. And in verse 10, in regard to righteousness, because I'm going to the Father where you can see me no longer. And in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now stands condemned. I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own. He will speak only what he hears. And he will tell you what is yet to come. He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. Making it known to you. Many things are happening in your lives. I have the advantage of being able to sit in the position of hearing the reports. And I see God moving. And I so yearn, dear ones, to see you rise up into the fullness of God in your life. I hear things sometimes that just make me want to leap and shout for joy. I can come here on Sunday morning and give praise from a deep reservoir of the good deeds of God. I hope you can. You see, if you come in the morning and the first 20 minutes are just sort of for fun for you, it's because you're not seeking your roots deep down in what God's doing in your life. I don't know if you noticed what happened when Susan was leading in O Magnify the Lord. And we sang O Magnify the Lord five times or six times. So when we got to singing Hosanna, we couldn't hold it in any longer. Did you notice that? Well, that's kind of the way it is with God. I just, so much is happening. I heard a story, a report of someone in the church. I can't go into it because I want to have the testimony some Sunday morning for you, except to say that the daughter of one of the people that was new to North Way got into a very difficult situation of anorexia. Some of you all know what that is. Serious condition. The doctor said it was going to be a long time getting out of this, a lot of trouble. And God sovereignly touched her life. Through prayer, through prayer, He sovereignly touched her life. So much so that the medical doctor involved in the case, who was a well-known specialist in the city of Pittsburgh, said, We've never had a case quite like this. I can't explain why this happened. You say it was a miracle? I can't dispute that. Why? Because God's moving by His Spirit. And these things happen, church. You don't hear about them often. I can tell you, I know people here today whose marriages have been saved because of the grace of God in their lives. Who are ready to go the opposite direction. God said, No, I'm going to make you one. And yet, my desire is that we all grow up into fullness. You see, the disciples saw those same miracles. They saw the lepers healed. Could you imagine what went through their minds when they saw that man born blind open up and see? Could you imagine the thrill in them when they saw this little girl that was pronounced dead get up and walk out the door? Are we talking about something of major excitement? And yet, Jesus said to the same disciples, these staggering words, He said, It is better for you. Verse 7 of chapter 16. It is better for you if I go away. How many of you believe the disciples thought it would be better for them? How can this be, Lord? I want to ask you something. Have you ever pictured yourself walking beside Jesus on into the place where you work and just watching how He handles that guy next to you that you wanted to share with? Have you ever pictured Jesus? I have. Walking into the hospital with me for a visit. Walking up to the bed of somebody who's there with cancer near the last stages of their life. Having Jesus right there, I say, Hey, I brought a friend to meet you today. I want you to meet my friend. His name is Jesus. And he has something for you. And I couldn't imagine anything more thrilling than to walk with Jesus. And yet He said, It's better. It's better for you. How can He make such a statement? Because He says, dear ones, I'm sending to you the Holy Spirit. He has been with you. Now He will be in you. Beloved, as I prayed this week, the Lord was heavy in my heart, on my heart. And the Lord spoke deep in my spirit and said, Many of my children, many of my children have forgotten my Spirit. My Holy Spirit, whom I've sent to comfort, to encourage, to come alongside, to lead. Many of my children have forgotten. Now I'm not saying that you purposely said, I'm not interested in you, Holy Spirit. I'm talking about people who have not understood the purpose of this great gift of God. Many of us here come from denominations and from personal backgrounds of churches where the Holy Spirit was barely ever mentioned. The third person of the Trinity became the ignored person of the Trinity. And here in our own church, beloved, it's possible, now listen, for you to be a Spirit-filled Christian and even, quote, have the gift of speaking in tongues and yet ignore the Holy Spirit. Two things happen when you ignore the Holy Spirit. Number one, and most serious, He is grieved. Say grieved. He's grieved. That word means heavy or sorrowful. It's the same word that's used when the Bible says that Peter was grieved when Jesus said to him, do you love me three times? It's the same word that said the disciples when they took Jesus away, they were heavy and sorrowful and grieved. He's grieved when we ignore him. Can you imagine living in a house with someone, let's say it's your spouse, and you never talk to them? Well, that sounds kind of strange. I've never heard of that. Beloved, I have heard of that. I have talked across the table from a person who used to go to this church who had that very condition. Never talked to their husband. What kind of a strange relationship is that? And yet, dear ones, the Bible says that you are the temple of the Holy Spirit. 1 Corinthians 3.16. The Holy Spirit lives in you and I want to ask you a question. How many of you have consciously talked to the Holy Spirit this week? How many of you have acknowledged the Holy Spirit as your guide, as your comforter, as your counselor? How many of you have said, Holy Spirit, walk with me through today? Now listen, this is not just some kind of wishy-washy making up something to say because we all don't know what to do here. I'm saying to you that God told us that many have forgotten the Holy Spirit. Many have sought to live life on their own power and that's the second consequence. Number one, he's grieved. Number two, you don't have any power. You can't make it in this kingdom without the power of the Holy Spirit. Three years ago, just about to the day, I flew down to Mexico City. I was invited to go to a Latin American mission conference and the main purpose really that I went to fulfill was to visit with Lisa Anderson who's our missionary to Mexico City. Well, how many of you have ever been to Mexico? A good portion of you really have. Well, I don't know about you, but I really wasn't prepared beyond the fact that I knew that I had the right ticket. I didn't know how to speak any Spanish. Zero. First time I ever heard a Spanish word was when I went to Fuller Seminary in 1971 out in Pasadena. Two guys walked up with me up to a little stand there, like a burger stand, and I said, what should I get? They said, well, try the tacos. I said, oh, well, that sounds all right. I walked up and said, I'll have two tacos. Of course, the people in the back were doing this belly laughing. I didn't know any Spanish. I didn't know anything about the culture. I didn't know anything about how to get around. I didn't know anything about the exchange rate and all that stuff. I had with me this little dictionary that said, say this and this will happen. So how many of you know that just doesn't work when you need it? So I got off the plane and I got through customs, and it's just teeming with people in the lobby of this airport, just teeming with people. I look out the door and I see these cabs lined up, all these strange looking vehicles, just people yelling out numbers of pesos to get downtown. I had an address and I had a telephone number for an emergency that I kind of just stuck right there so I could get my hand on it in a hurry. And I didn't know what to do. I got through customs and I looked around and I said, well, it looks like I'm heading into Mexico City on my own, looking real official and all. I was an expert. You know what a definition of an expert is, don't you? A person with a briefcase who's more than 50 miles from home. Okay? So I'm... That's right, isn't it, Jim? So I'm going on in and I look out through this crowd and I see this one white face shining real bright. And here it's Lisa Henderson. She has this big smile on her face and she comes running over and gave me a hug and we started sharing and I said, boy, am I glad to see you. More than you know. More than I've ever been. I'm glad to see you, Lisa. Because then, you see, she became my personal escort in my week-long stay in Mexico City. She walked right up, told the man what to do with my bags and told the cabbie what we were going to do to pay and all this stuff. All that week she took me around and she told me what to order. She had a lot of fun with that. But she was the one that interpreted that culture to me and those people to me. And, beloved, I had a wonderful week. I learned an awful lot. Now, it is not at all an exaggeration to say that you've been placed into a country that you don't know. It's really a kingdom. And you've been given a new language, the language of love that we're not taught in our culture. And you've been given a new set of values and rules. And all these things are new to you and you walk around and you don't know what to do. When you find yourself and you became a believer, you were just kind of lost. What are these people raising their hands for? And so someone sticks a Bible in your hand and says, well, just read this and it'll all work out for you. Anyone ever just read this? Do you know what I discovered? I discovered that I had to have someone interpret this to me. And you know who that someone is? God sent his personal emissary, his very own son. And his son said, now I'm going back to the Father, but I'm sending you someone and that someone is the Holy Spirit. See, the Holy Spirit is in the lobby of the kingdom of God. He's waiting for you. He wants to meet you and he wants to take you on in the kingdom because, listen, beloved, there are many enemies who would still come in and steal your life. And God spoke to my heart and said that there are many who have forgotten my spirit. Why does that happen? Beloved, it happens because religion is so woven into the fabric of our lives. And religion, we've heard it defined, religion is man's attempt to what? Get to God. But listen, religion is also man's attempt to live for God. Religion is man's way, his effort of saying, God, accept me. Let me do these things and receive me in. You can go around the world. Almost every nation of the world has thousands of idols. Go over to India sometime and on the dashboards of cars and hanging all around the inside of thousands of little idols and things to worship. What is the message in that? The message is that man is trying to get God appeased. He wants God to say it's okay. What you're doing is all right. But you see, did you read the sign this morning on the road? Religion kills. It's the spirit that gives life. I don't care what religion you have. It's the spirit that gives life to God. God is spirit, John 4, 24 says. God is a spirit. It's the only way that you can know God is to know him as spirit. Now why has this happened? Why have we forgotten the Holy Spirit? Well, the number one reason, I really believe, the number one reason is that over the years the churches have not told us about it. Do you all know that when John Wesley, how many of you are Methodists? Go ahead and confess. One-time Methodists, all right? Maybe you still are. When John Wesley established the Methodist Church, do you know that he said that everything that was happening in his life was because of the work of the Holy Spirit? He even preached a second experience of the Holy Spirit. Can you imagine that? And he called that experience entire sanctification, being filled with the spirit of God. The whole denomination moved along in a wave of the Holy Spirit. But something happened. The preachers stopped preaching about it because there's something in you, every one of you, that wants to get back under control. And that's what religion does. How many people do you know that simply have their religion under control? You ask them, what do they think about God? Well, they'll give you a name. I'm this or I'm that. They'll name their church, their denomination. And that settles it. Why? Because they're under control. You see, God says, no, no, I want to be in control of your life, not under your control. And so the Holy Spirit moves in and out among us and he wants to control us, not us control God. See, religion is us trying to just tell God what to say, not the other way around. And so preachers stopped preaching it. How many of you went to a church where you never heard the Holy Spirit mentioned, except maybe as you read the Apostles' Creed? And so we dry up, beloved. It's no surprise. We dry up. We don't know. We can't live what we don't know. A.W. Tozer, who was a tremendous godly man, was considering all that he saw of the erosion of the spirit life and he wrote this, Satan has opposed the doctrine of the spiritual life about as bitterly as any doctrine there is. He's confused it, opposed it, surrounded it with false notions and fears. He's blocked every effort of the Church of Christ to receive from the Father her divine and blood-bought patrimony. The Church has tragically neglected this great liberating truth that there is now for the child of God a full and wonderful and completely satisfying anointing with the Holy Spirit. This spirit-filled life is not a special deluxe edition of Christianity. It is part and parcel of the total plan of God for his people. Beloved, you are not to be a paperback Christian. God's not made you a paperback version of a believer. You're the deluxe, leather-bound version, fully prepared by God to be all that he's designed you to be. There isn't just a few special anointed ones. The word Christian means little anointed one. But you've got to tap into the Spirit of God. You've got to hear the Holy Spirit of God. Another reason, I believe, why we've missed the Holy Spirit so often is that there's just enough weird ones around to put us all on the defensive. Anyone ever been tripped up by a weird Christian? Take a good look around you right now, all right? Somebody that... Well, you know, they just as soon have some mystical reason why the sun came up today. I was in prayer and God just spoke to me in this powerful dream that the sun was going to come up. And I have a word for you, Scott. The sun is coming up. And you receive it. That's good. Now, you all know what I'm talking about. And you'll turn on the TV and there'll be 15 worthwhile right-on television programs proclaiming the gospel. And you'll turn to the one where the guy is just spaced out. All right? And you'll say, now, see, that's what it means to be spiritual right there. That guy is Jesus. Well, church, just because there's counterfeit money in the world doesn't mean that yours isn't any good. Just because there's those who have abused the spiritual life doesn't discount the purpose and plan of God that we all move in the fullness of the Holy Spirit. The other reason why I think we've kind of ignored the Holy Spirit is in 1987 in America, the whole inclination is to be rationalistic. You see, we are led in this nation by our reason. If it's not reasonable, we don't want it. And there's something difficult about putting reason around the Holy Spirit. I mean, I can say to you, well, let's believe the Bible. It's the Word of God. And so a lot of people go and they preach the Bible. Well, it's tangible. I can put my hands on it. I can dissect it. I can exegete it. I can tear it apart. And listen, there are churches filled with people that make this book their religion. But the Holy Spirit gives life. I've been in some of those churches. You step out of line, you're done. But you see, it appeals to the reason. It appeals to the intellect. But the Holy Spirit is a person, a person to be loved and to be heard, a person to communicate with. You know, the Bible tells us that He's not just some force, some strange, ethereal being. The Bible says that the Spirit works. The Spirit searches. He testifies. He bears witness. He teaches. He instructs and reproves. He prays and makes intercession for you. He leads and He guides the believer into all truth. And then it goes on and says, now listen to these emotions. It says that He can be grieved. You see, a substance, an it, cannot be grieved. He can be insulted. He can be lied to. He can be blasphemed and resisted. He can be tempted and vexed. And He can be quenched. The Holy Spirit is a person who wants to touch your life today. And what I fear, beloved, almost more than anything, is that we will go on and do our religious practices and miss the Holy Spirit. Do you know that morning prayer at 6 a.m. can be a religious practice? That we can show up here at 6 a.m., pat one another on the back and say, good job, Jesse. You made it again. And dear ones, discipline is vitally important. You'll never go on in God if you're not disciplined. But it can be your religion. And somehow, I'm not communicating adequately enough how important it is that you determine that you're going to know the Holy Spirit in your life. That you're going to come to terms with Him as your power source, as your relationship in day-to-day life. You've got to know Him enough. You've got to know Him. You see, the great men of the Christian world today, of the Kingdom of God in this generation, are men who would say and women unabashedly, it's the Holy Spirit. It's the Holy Spirit. I give all the credit to the person of the Holy Spirit. Jimmy Swaggart has the largest TV ministry in the world. And really, out of that, is much other fruit. Medical missions and child care and everything else. And he says this, everything you see is because of the leading of the Holy Spirit. God gives the directions and we merely follow. And you know, it doesn't take any particular brilliance to do this. How do you do it? How do you do it? How do you follow the Holy Spirit? Well, let me give you three things. Write these down. This is what you can do to touch the Spirit of God in your life. The first thing is, you have got to see that fellowship with the Holy Spirit is God's purpose for every one of you. Now, I believe that some of you here today are saying, well, what's the difference? I mean, I talk to Jesus when I pray and I love God. Why is this Holy Spirit thing so important? How many of you understand what I'm saying here? I want to see your hands. Do you understand the difference? You see, the Holy Spirit is one of three persons in the Trinity. Now, my wife's here. Honey, I want you to stand up. You look so nice today. I don't know how you're feeling. Okay? We are one in the Spirit. When we were married, the Bible says that we were joined together. God sees us as one. That's why when the Bible says, what the marriage ceremony says, that God has joined together that let no man fall asleep. We are two distinct persons, but we are one together. Now, I'm going to let you sit down. Alright? We are one, but in God, there are three distinct persons. And yet, He's one. Now, how many of you understand what I'm saying here? The Trinity is not easily understood. I can't explain it to you. You know, people say, well, it's like snow, water, and steam. Somehow that just doesn't get it when you're talking about God, does it? He's three in one. One substance with three expressions. But church, if you know God the Father, and you know Jesus, but you ignore the Holy Spirit, you are missing God's provision for your daily life. You're missing it. And I believe with all my heart that that's what God's saying to us. Many of us are missing the Holy Spirit. So, the first thing you've got to do is to seek fellowship with Him. It says in 2 Corinthians 13, turn there and look at it in your Bible, so you see an underline. 13, 14. May the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, there's one person, the love of God, there's the second person, God the Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you. Now, that word communion is the word kononia. Who knows what that word means? Fellowship. It means participating. It means intimate communion. God wants to know you in communion. He wants you to have fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Philippians 2 says, verse 1, if there be any comfort, if there be any fellowship, fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Can you awaken in the morning and say, Holy Spirit, go with me through this day. Holy Spirit, lead me today. Let me hear your voice. Let me know the nudging of your leading. The difference between an ordinary routine and gutted out Christian life and an exciting, fruit-bearing life is the ability to discern that voice. You've got to do it. That's what God's saying. It's time for us to move on and hear the fellowship of the Holy Spirit. Number two, you need to maintain an attitude of forgiveness. Nothing will stop that fellowship faster than unforgiveness. Unforgiveness is basically saying, you've done something to me that I cannot let you forget. Even though God forgave me for something that was so much more blasphemous and difficult, I can't forgive you. You ever have your children, they'll get a collection of G.I. Joe figures or balls or something like, and one of the little siblings will come along and say, I want to play with that one. You ever have that happen? They've got this pile of dolls. And a neighbor girl will come in across the street. And they'll walk over and they'll pick up this one doll. And your little kid goes, no, it's my doll. How can you... And they go wild about one thing and they have this pile. You can't understand it. I guess your children never did that. Mine did that. But what is that? Well, you see, that's that thing in us that watches out for ourselves. We can't even give away what we've been gifted. Unforgiveness is saying to God, even though you forgave me of an enormous debt, so enormous that Christ had to die, I can't forgive you for what you said to me or what you did to me. And dear ones, can I say to you that there are some here this morning who are living a life in a prison of unforgiveness. You're here today and you've never forgiven that spouse that left you. You've never forgiven that father or mother who somehow ignored you or hurt you. Or that son or daughter who rebelled. That boss who abused his authority over your life. And if you don't forgive, you will not know fellowship with Christ. That's pretty straightforward, but that's the truth. I just want you to whisper. I want us to stop right now and bow our heads. If you hold unforgiveness to anybody, I want you to whisper that name. If God will grant you the grace right now and say, Lord, I forgive him. I forgive him right now. I forgive him. I release him. There might be just a few of you here right now that need to forgive yourself. You need to say, listen, God has forgiven me for my past life, for my failure, and now I receive it and I declare myself forgiven. Don't beat yourself over the head with what God's already said. He forgives. Put your headphones on. Please. Is there someone here today that would say, I know that I have not been able to forgive myself for what happened. I need that forgiveness. Just put your hand up and down. I don't want to embarrass you. Alright, yes, yes, yes. Yes, over here, yes, okay. In the name of Jesus, I speak to you now. You are forgiven. You are forgiven. God has forgiven you because you trust in the power of his blood and I want you to receive it. The word of the Lord for your life right now, he forgives you. He forgives you of that neglect, of that hurt. He forgives you. He loves you. He cares about you. And now I want you to receive, I want you to breathe in deep and receive the filling of the spirit of God. I want you to do something new in your life. Dear one, you can lift your head again. The third and final thing is that we need to learn to obey those first promptings of the Holy Spirit. Anyone here ever been awakened at three in the morning and wondered why? At four in the morning? Ever wake up and say, what am I doing? I don't have to get up for another half hour here. Another couple of hours? Ever wonder why that nudging came? Did you ever consider that maybe God was saying I want to get up and commune with you now? I want you to rise up in that fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Church, I don't know about you, but I believe God nudges many of you to get alone with him at times and you just kind of push it out of your mind. You say, no, no I'm not interested right now. It was a blessing to me today that Gene came up after the first service, didn't know what I was going to preach about, and said the Lord awakened her at five this morning and told her some things in her quiet time about the ministry of the Holy Spirit. And she went and wrote those all down, things that the Holy Spirit is to provide in her life. Now why did she receive that? Because she heard that nudging, that first prompting of the Holy Spirit. First move of God. It's so easy to push that down. A couple of months ago, Scott was here and he received someone to look at part of the church to do some work in fixing up the building. He sensed that nudging to share with that person. And I'm sure he went through the same thing you go through. Well, what are they going to think? Maybe it's everybody who comes to this church probably gets the same pitch and all that stuff. But Scott obeyed, he shared with him, and that man is going to be baptized with it. Because Scott obeyed the Lord in that. He was right here this morning. See church, it comes because you hear that first prompting. Now here's what I've discovered. The more you ignore that first prompting, the farther and farther away it gets. The more you quicken to it, the easier it becomes to discern. You say, well, what if I miss it? Well, what if you miss it? God will forgive you, you just get on again. It's no big deal. I've done that lots of times. I'll say to someone, if you'll permit me, I really feel like I'm going to ask you a question right now. I'm going to say, get lost buddy, I'm not interested. That's fine. Did I miss it? I don't know. God knows. Maybe two weeks down the road someone else is going to ask the same question and they're going to say, we don't know God's ways. We've got to hear the promptings. If you don't want to grieve the Holy Spirit, then those are the three things you've got to do. Would you put them up again please? You've got to have fellowship with the Spirit of God and set yourself to put him number one in your life. You've got to maintain an attitude of forgiveness. And you have to obey those very first promptings of the Spirit. If you don't do that, church, I'll tell you something, we're going to stay right here at Northwark Christian Community. We are not going to go on. Jeff, I'm talking to you this morning. I'm talking to you Dave. Peggy, I'm talking to you. Everyone that's here that's part of this church, we need to hear the Holy Spirit in our lives. He's calling us. I want to be Spirit led with all my heart. Don't you? Let me conclude with this. Yesterday morning, Jesse came in and we were talking a little bit and he didn't know what I was talking about. And he shared with me that seven senior high young people received Christ Jesus as their Lord on Thursday night. Seven kids. One regular meeting. And he said, you know, Pastor, he said, I feel like the reason that happened is because I followed the prompting of the Holy Spirit. Dear ones, are you ready to be led by the Spirit of God? I want you to stand with me and ask the Spirit to touch your life right now. Ask the Spirit of the Lord just to touch your life. To breathe on your life. Let's sing it together. Breathe on me. Breathe on me. Holy Spirit, breathe on me. Take a breath, Holy Spirit, breathe on me. Again, make it your prayer. Breathe on me, Holy Spirit, breathe on me. Take now my heart, plant it, Holy Spirit, breathe on me. I'm just going to do something that I'm confident. If God's in it, then he's going to acknowledge it. I'm just going to open up this altar and say to you this morning, if you've not been responding to the Holy Spirit in your life, if you've not heard the nudging and prompting and obeyed, if you know that what I was saying today was descriptive of your life and you want to change that, you want to mark it down right now as a turning point, I want you to come, stand right here and present yourself to God and say, Holy Spirit, touch me today. Let's sing it one more time. Breathe on me, breathe, Holy Spirit, breathe, take now, Holy Spirit, breathe, plant it, Holy Spirit, You all know I love you as your pastor. I'm going to tell you something. Many of you are grieving the Spirit of God right now. Many of you are grieving the Spirit of God right now because he has nudged you and you know in your life that you're not obeying his promise. You know you're not communion. And I gave an invitation that was very clear. If you resist it, I guarantee you that you will not be a Spirit-led believer. You will find yourself moving along in the same rollercoaster life you've been living. It's going to take some men and some women who humble themselves and say, God, I'm not embarrassed. I want to live in communion with you. Now I know this. I know it as sure as I'm the pastor of this church. You're not following those promises. God is saying to you today, it's time for you to do something about it. I'm opening the altar up and I'm saying, God is calling you to come and make a change. That's all I'm going to say.
