Master of the Multitudes III, The Father's Final Four
April 2, 1988

SUMMARY
The resurrection of Jesus Christ proves He is the ultimate victor over death and the only leader truly worthy of a believer's total allegiance. Based on this victory, Christ offers believers the keys of knowledge and the kingdom of heaven. These keys provide authority to rule in life, freedom from the fear of death, and the assurance that one's name is recorded in the Lamb's Book of Life.

This is the third and final part of the series, Master of the Multitudes. This message, the Father's Final Four, was presented on Easter Sunday, April 3rd, 1988, by Dr. J. Passavant, Senior Pastor of North Lake Christian Community. Okay, let's all say it. A supplement, not a substitute. That's all right, you'll know in a few minutes that if you follow that outline, you'll probably be lost in a little while. Okay, Colossians, Chapter 2, please. And I'm going to read the text for this morning. Verse 15, one verse. Okay, if you did not get an outline, you can wave your hand now and someone will find you. Oh, we have a section back here. Are we out of outlines? Okay, ushers, over here, please. Right by the door, there's a whole crowd of folks who didn't get an outline. You just have to go around and get them that way. Hold your hands up and the ushers will get to you. All right, Colossians 2, verse 15. Having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross. In America, we love our champions, don't we? I mean, we love a winner. Everybody loves a winner. Last night, we had two winners. If you're a basketball fan, you know what I'm talking about. Oklahoma and Kansas emerged as winners. And we're going to love the winners, but boy, do we give a hard time to the losers. We love winners in every arena. Most of us will turn on our TV set and the drone will continue of every primary and every one that's won another delegate vote. And you're going to hear about that for the next who knows how many months. You're going to be hearing of the Olympics coming up and all the winners and losers. You're going to be hearing every day the stock market report. Winners today in the stock market, losers today in the stock market. It seems that it's in sports that we hear the most about winning and losing. And whoever it was that said it's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game, never watched a Little League coach. You know, I had an experience just a couple weeks ago coaching fifth and sixth grade boys basketball. And, you know, I have lots of reasons why I need to be really controlled and in order when I'm coaching basketball. I mean, I have some role modeling and all to do. And things got real heated in that game. And the guys were putting out, you know, and the coach just, I mean, it was just hard to be stuck to that chair. But it's really difficult when the referee is in your congregation. Isn't that right, Michael? I learned a lot that day about sanctification that's not yet complete. And so we love winners and we want to we want to be a winner. It's just part of the fabric of who we are. We basically learn to idolize people who have achieved. And if you're from the South, Bear Bryant was a great hero. If you're from State College, it's who? Yes, Joe Paterno. If you're from Kentucky, it's Adolph Rupp. If you're from UCLA, it's John Wooden. If you're from Pittsburgh, you don't have anybody, but you're working on it. Maybe it's the emperor, Chaz Noel. Well, maybe it's not. Remember last summer, the last fall when things were, you know, we don't follow losers very often. I heard Jim Valvano, who's the coach of North Carolina State, quite successful. He was with a group of his friends. And they had gone 8-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference last year. And they were all excited and thinking they had a shot at a championship and all that. And Jim said, well, you know, I know you're my friends now, but if we go 3-8 next year in the conference, and not 8-3, if we go 3-8, will you still love me then? They turned to him and said, Coach, sure we'll love you. We'll miss you, but we'll love you. And that's the way it is. If you lose, phew, out you go. Have you heard of Walter Mondale? It's been a long time. How would you like to be Robert Bork? You know, and people that have lost, it's just our media and our country, we just pull away from them. We abandon losers. Dear ones, can I tell you that one of the reasons why I believe in the resurrection of Jesus Christ is because a man who was publicly humiliated and disgraced and mocked and killed in front of a huge crowd of people, a man whose body was literally torn apart in the flesh and thrown into a cold, empty grave, a man whose followers and most committed devotees abandoned him at the moment of his death, that man, a few short days later, had a crowd of people following him. And in a few short weeks, he had thousands who were calling upon his name. I want you to know, people don't follow losers, they follow winners. If there's a reason why history argues for the veracity of the resurrection, it's because Jesus, who looked to be the world's greatest loser, who the powers waved their fingers and said, You, who are the Son of God, come down from the cross. And when he didn't, he said, No, there's a loser. Weeks later, that man had thousands following him, saying, Now I see, he's risen from the dead. And now, 2,000 years later, multiplied, tens of millions of people are following this winner, the Lord Jesus Christ. But it's interesting, as we look at our culture, as much as our culture goes after winners and abandons losers, it's interesting, right now, in 1988, I want to get personal, and right here, Easter Sunday, April 1988, it seems like what I'm beginning to hear happen in our culture in America is, Let's just begin to, let's kind of put it all together. Maybe there aren't winners and losers, as we thought. It's not really what you believe, as much as the fact that you're sincere that counts. I never heard that. I never heard anyone say something like, Well, it's not whether Jesus rose from the dead or not, it's whether or not you believe he rose from the dead. And if you believe that, then he probably did, and that's fine for you. Have you ever had anyone tell you, It's fine for you, but it doesn't really matter for me? Have you ever heard someone say, Well, all the roads kind of lead up the same mountain, anyhow. Dear ones, I want you to know, that isn't true. And I see a move on in our culture, and it's a very clear move to me, of just kind of washing it all out, and there's no longer clear winners. There's no longer absolutes, but it's all just kind of muddled out. We all just kind of believe our way, and that's all that matters. I want you to know, you pick up this, I don't know about today's edition, but I can tell you last night's edition of the Pittsburgh Press, the Sunday edition that was printed last night. I didn't read the entire paper cover to cover, but I read every section. I didn't find one mention of Easter Sunday. Can anyone verify that? Not one mention. And of course, when you see something as sorrowful and tragic as the loss of the leadership of these major ministries that we've all experienced in the last weeks and months, dear ones, those things just tend to fuel the fire of those who would say, It doesn't matter. I mean, you think this, and you think that, but that doesn't seem to work for him. And I want you to know something. There's a campaign on to wash out the distinctives, but I want you to know, God has not changed, and his word is still truth. And I can say now, not boastfully, not arrogantly, as though I have some corner on the market of truth, but I can say now, after 2,000 years of watching thousands upon thousands of people give their lives to Christ, I can tell you that there is only one who is alive from the grave, and his name is Jesus Christ. There aren't a whole slug of winners out there. There's only one who conquered death, and his name is Jesus. He alone is worthy of our allegiance, of our praise. And the message that we need to hear today is that there are winners and there are losers on the eternal scale of things. The reason why so many people miss the reality of God's love, they miss the power of the truth of his single victory over death, is because they try to somehow put their mind around it before they let their heart be touched by it. I had a long conversation with a young man who was about 30 years old who happened to be from a Jewish background, and he told me an interesting story. He said that for three years, inside here, he knew that Christ was the Messiah, that he alone had claim on his life, but it took him three years to let his mind come to terms with it. And so often, you see, we let the external things get in the way of that. We let the outside things, and people say, well, this man can fall in sin, and this man can do this thing wrong, or these Christians are hypocrites, or whatever. And we put off coming to terms with what the inside, what our heart, here today. Many of you in your heart will feel, sense something is right about the love and the praise and the reality of God that you're hearing in these people. But if you look on the outside, it may disappoint you. I read a fascinating article this week about a man by the name of Christopher Nolan. Up until age 11, Christopher Nolan could not communicate with people. He was born with cerebral palsy. He was a complete spastic. His body would go out of control at any time. He tried to smile for a picture, and his face would just contort up. At age 11, he found a new drug. His family found a drug for him that enabled him to gain some control of his motor functions. They discovered that by holding his head under the chin and putting a unicorn stick around his forehead, he could type one letter at a time. And so his mother would stand with him for hours while Christopher began to communicate. He was mute, couldn't talk. He would just type up one letter at a time. And over the last 11 years, what they discovered was inside of that spastic body that had no control and seemed to be virtually useless was a brilliant mind. And in 1987, Christopher Nolan won the highest literary award in Great Britain, and his book became the number one bestseller under the eye of the clock. Inside that body that was contorted and uncontrolled was a brilliant mind. Dear ones, inside, many of our hearts, many of our lives are twisted and contorted, but inside, Jesus is working a miracle. Inside, the Son of God is bringing his rule. And I want to tell you something. Once that begins to take shape in you, then the outside things begin to come around. It starts in the inside. That's the resurrection, you see. It started inside the tomb and worked its way out. And today, I want to share with you four keys that Jesus gives as proof of his victory. When John Glenn came back from his historic space flight, they gave to him the key to the city of New York. Remember that? And he was able to do whatever he wanted in the city of New York. The mayor presented him with a key. I want you to know that Jesus Christ will present you with keys today based on his victory as you trust in him. Now, let's look at these four keys and see how they may relate to where you are in the Lord today. Number one, Jesus says in Luke 11 and verse 52 that you've been withheld the key of knowledge. He says, I want to give you the key of knowledge. You know, we're a society that is information crazed. Did you know that the halfway point of all human knowledge was ten years ago? Hello? That means that knowledge has doubled in the last ten years. The cumulative body of knowledge has doubled in the last ten years. And we are growing so fast, I think it's something like 24,000 pages a day of accumulated knowledge is added to our body of knowledge. We have a computer now that does two billion calculations in a second. How would you like to use that for your income tax this next week? Two billion a second. We are acquiring knowledge at an incredible rate. Computers and satellite information exchanges and all that kind of thing. But yet, dear ones, isn't it true today that all of our knowledge has not solved all of our problems? It breaks my heart to know that we are the greatest debtor nation in all the world today. We owe more money than any other nation. We have more people living in poverty today than we did in any time in our nation's history. And there seems to be a contradiction. We know more, but yet our crime rate is the highest it's ever been. What is that? Somehow, knowledge and life do not necessarily seem to equate when it comes to the world's way of knowledge. And God isn't here just to make us know more. In fact, the Bible says that we are constantly searching for knowledge but never coming to the truth. 2 Timothy 3.7 Hosea 4.6 says that people are perishing for lack of knowledge. And yet the Bible says that God wants all men to repent and come to the knowledge of God. He wants you to know. Well, what is the key to knowledge that Jesus wants to give? As evidence of His victory, I want you all to hold it in your hand right now. Lift it up. What is the key of knowledge? There it is. It's the Word of God. The Bible says that out of the mouth of God flows all knowledge. Proverbs 2.6 If you need to know something about life, can I tell you with authority now of 23 years of following Christ, it's in this book. You say, well, it doesn't tell me in here if I should take a job in Philadelphia or not. Can I tell you something? I remember eight years ago, Carol and I were praying about taking a church in Philadelphia. We were just waiting on the Lord. And I turned, and I was just reading through my daily reading. And I was saying, Oh, Lord, what are you doing? And Revelation, I turned to Revelation. I was reading through here. What is this? To the church in Philadelphia, write this. What he opens, no one can shut. And what he shuts, no one can open. I said, Oh, my goodness. And here was Philadelphia written right in the Bible. I have to tell you, that just blew me away. If it had Buffalo in there, I'd have been really surprised. But, you know, interestingly, that didn't really give me the answer because it said, What he opens, no one can shut. And what he shuts, no one can open. I didn't know if he was opening or shutting it. I ended up here. I have seen God's Word fit every single circumstance of my life. It fits. God, the key of knowledge is knowing this book. And you heard a couple stand up here who had never really taken this book for themselves. They'd seen someone stand up like I am and talk to them about it. But I want you to know, God wants you to know what's in here. He wants every one of you to know what this book says for your life. And I want you to know today it's not a collection of myths and fairy tales and stories that someone concocted some years ago, but rather the history that this book attests to now has been so verified. Archaeologically, the Bible is the most verifiable book from antiquity. There are 24,000 manuscripts of the New Testament extant today. 24,000. In fact, secular scholars would say that the Bible stands miles above every other book in terms of the history, historicity of that book. And prophecy over and over again. Do you know that there were 21 prophecies fulfilled on the day Jesus Christ died? Good Friday, we just... 21 prophecies, some of which were 900 years before the fact. One day, 21 of them all were fulfilled. Not one bone was broken. He was pierced in the side. His garments were sold. And those kinds of things. 21 of them. I want to say to you today in all... with all my heart, dear ones, there are six times as many prophecies about the second coming of Christ as there were of the first. And not one of them was unfulfilled when he came the first time. Jesus is coming back, and the book tells us how. We need to know the key of knowledge, and we need to come to terms with it. Why is this book, if it's just another book, can I ask you, why is it so resistant? Why is there someone from our congregation right now crossing the border into the Soviet Union with Bibles underneath her coat? Why do people literally give two and three months of salary for one portion of the Bible in some lands? Because it's a book that the authorities and the governments and the rulers know that if it gets in their hands, it's the truth, and the truth will set them free. Why is there only one book that you can't read in your schools today? Because the rulers and the powers know that there's liberty to those who will come to terms with the Word of God. And Jesus wants to give you the key. I've had people say, you know, when I finally open to Christ, the Bible finally makes sense to me. That's the key. If you open to the author, then the author will lead you in your understanding. The second key is the key of the kingdom of heaven. Now, it's number three in your outline, but just let me tell you here. The kingdom of heaven is a real and very identifiable existence. People say, well, if I can't see it, I don't believe it. Can you see radio waves in this room right now? No. But if you tuned in your little receiver and put your Walkman on right now, guess what would you hear? You'd hear it loud and clear. There's hundreds and hundreds of different frequencies probably just vibrating inside this room right now. The kingdom of heaven is just as real. You can't see it, but it's there. And interestingly, intellectuals in our culture are finally coming to terms with this. Isaac Asimov, who's a very popular science fiction writer, people like John Denver and Shirley MacLaine and people like, you'd know a lot of these names. They're all part of what's known as the New Age Movement. Now, many of our friends here at North Way have grown up in the Pittsburgh area. You haven't heard a whole lot about this, but I want you to know something. The farther out west you go, the more people you have getting into this New Age Movement. And I'll tell you something. The United States of America is tilted from the west to the east, and it's coming this way, folks. And there are thousands, in fact, the leaders of the New Age Movement will tell you that there are 500 million people who espouse some form of the convictions that there is a higher level of consciousness. Let me read it for you. Lola Davis, who writes one of their major works, says this. The New Age Christ resides in a different plane of consciousness from that which we experience. There he directs the different masters, a group of advanced souls, most of them discarnate, that is, not in the flesh, known variously as the White Brotherhood, the Great White Lodge, the Masters of Wisdom, and so on and so on. Okay, all these may be little buzzwords to you, but I want you to know there are thousands of people today who are trying to get in touch with this other realm. Well, this other realm, you see, is the unseen realm of powers that the Bible says is real. And I trust you don't take this too lightly. In fact, at the end of May, I'm going to do a two-week series of messages on the dangers of the New Age Movement because I believe that it's infiltrating. It's part of the dilution of what we really believe. But there is a kingdom of heaven, and there's one who holds the key, and his name is Jesus. And he says, I'm going to give you that key. What is the key? Well, the key is the power of agreement with the will of God. The key is when you come to terms with God, you get in line with His will, and you can rule in this life by the power of God coming down through you. That's what Jesus did. Miracles are an evidence of the kingdom of heaven ruling through a man. When we hear a story, a beautiful story, so beautiful that it can't even be spoken, that's the power of the kingdom of heaven coming down into a person and touching them. Jesus says, I want to give you the key. The number three key of victory that Jesus wants to give you is the key of death. For those of you who are visiting today, you wouldn't know that in the last six weeks, five weeks, I guess it is, we have buried two people in our congregation, a 14-year-old boy and a mature man. We have been through the valley of the shadow of death in our congregation. But Jesus said in Revelation 1 and verse 18 that I hold the keys of death and hell. And I want you to know as I stood beside the lifeless body of a 14-year-old boy in his own bed in his own home, I looked there and I said, Lord, I know this isn't all there is. And I know that though this flesh has no animation, there's no breathing, there's no life, I know that this young man is alive. I know that he's met you, the one who holds the key of death, and that he on the inside has come into a new realm of existence. And there was a strange peace that overcame that whole household and that whole circumstance that I still can't describe today. You see, Jesus Christ is the only answer to death. And dear ones, we are so inclined in our culture to push it out of sight, don't even deal with it. I want you to know every one of us will deal with it. Who are you going to go to when you face the door of death? Go to the one who has the key to go through the other side. Jesus holds it by virtue of the fact that he died for you and for me. That's why he holds the key. And he says, I want to give you that key so that when you knock on death's door, you can open it and go right on through to the other side. That's what Jesus wants to do. That's the key that he gives. Then finally, Jesus said, and this is the one that perhaps would be newest to most of us today. He said, I want to give you the key of David. You read about that in Revelation 3, 7, Isaiah 22, 22. The key of David, which opens that which no man can shut and shut what no man can open. I want to use a graphic illustration. If I might ask Pastor Scott and Doug Smith to come right now. Turn in your Bibles as they're coming, please, to Revelation chapter 20. The Bible describes a scene in the book of Revelation where we're all going to stand before God. It's a vivid scene. Verse 11, let me read it for you. Then I saw a great white throne and him who was seated on it. Earth and sky fled from his presence and there was no place for them. And I saw the dead, great and small, a huge congregation standing before the throne and the books were open. Now these books, which I trust you can see, are just a small, tiny representation. The Bible says that there are two eternal books that will be opened on that day. The one book is called the book of deeds. In it are written everything that you and I have done, will do and will ever do. It is an accounting of every one of the things that we have done as people. You know, we joke about it, don't we? We joke about accounting. I hope that doesn't get written down yet. But you know something? The reason why we joke about it is because not one of us, as good as we might be, and you might have a whole list of wonderful deeds that you've done, not one of us is immune from having times when we have done things that we hope no one ever knows about. But dear ones, God sees it all. He's everywhere. The Bible says that the book is open if one of the things in this book is a sin, that is, it's fallen short of God. If just one of the things in here doesn't meet up to perfect righteousness, then you won't be able to share in heaven's glory. You won't be able to stand with God and enjoy eternal purpose. And there's going to come a day when I'm going to stand before the Lord and I'm going to hear my name, John Ellsworth Passivant III, and the book of deeds is going to be open. But at the same time, the Bible says, look at it and then to verse 12, another book was opened, which is the book of life. And it's Jesus who opens this book of life. And when this book is opened, the Lord Jesus Christ himself will appear on the pages of that book and he will see written in that book. As he looks down through the pages, he'll see that in July of 1963, John Ellsworth Passivant III had his name written in this book called the Lamb's Book of Life. And my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, he will turn to God the Father and he will say, Father, there's no need to look in this book of deeds because he has his name written in this book of life and whosoever name is written in the book of life is no longer accountable for all that which is in this book. He is mine and I receive him into eternal habitation. Hallelujah. Thank you, Lord. Dear ones, the key of David is the key of salvation, which opens the book which no man can shut. Now, you have the privilege today of believing that all that I'm doing is trying to somehow get you emotionally driven up to believe God. I want you to know something. I'm just telling you what the Bible says. You know, I would be guilty if I withheld this from you today. I would be guilty of the greatest sin that I could think of. Because I see what God has done and yet I see so many people walk right by it and say, well, I'll take care of it on my own some other way. Dear ones, I hope we established early on there is one victor. There is only one who conquered death and sin and hell. There is only one way to stand at the white throne of God and have your name written and read before the Heavenly Father so that you're not judged according to your deeds. Young people here today there's only one way. It's by coming to Jesus. And so you can understand, dear ones, why on this Easter Sunday morning my heart goes out to everyone. I wish I could come and just sit down with every one of you and say, oh, I hope you don't do that. But I feel so strongly that if we could just talk. The problem is, folks, we don't talk about the things that bother us. I can't come to each one of you today, but I can do this. I can let you respond. I can let you say before God, Lord, I want your keys of victory in my life. I want to know your keys of the word of knowledge. I want to know the key of the kingdom of heaven. I want to know the key of death so that I don't have to fear death any longer. I want to know the key of David which opens that which no man can shut, the book of life. I want to know that today. Dear ones, I stand here only as God's messenger to say the Lord calls you today. He who conquered death, he triumphed over them on the cross. He calls you to his side today. Will you come? Let's bow in prayer, please. And ask us to quietly sing together a chorus of reverent praise to God. The God to whom the Bible says every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. For he is Lord. He is Lord. He is risen from the dead. And he is Lord. Every knee shall bow. Every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord. For you are Lord. You are Lord. Every knee shall bow. Opportunity for all of us to respond right now, dear ones. I'm going to ask you, if you would please, to give the courtesy of privacy to everyone in the room by bowing your heads, please. First of all, I'd like to ask for all of you here today, do you want to receive from Jesus, the victor, the crown, the key of knowledge today? Do you want to know the Word of God? If you do, if you want him to open the Word of God to you like you've never known before, I just want you to slip your hand up right now and put it down. Go ahead. Yes, I agree with every hand that goes up right now that the crown and the key of knowledge will be released to you in a powerful way from this point forward in Jesus' name. Yes, okay. Then I want you to come into agreement right now. This is your time to respond before God. For everyone who would say, Jay, I need to reign in life. Circumstances are swallowing me up. I want to reign in life through the kingdom of heaven. By that authority, I receive from my Christ, the king, I receive the key of the kingdom of heaven, authority to rule in life. Just lift your hand right now and look at me. I'm going to agree with you. Yes, many of you, I agree with you. Yes, and over here. Yes, and over here. Yes, and in the back. Yes, ma'am. Over here. Yes, way in the back in the white. Yes, I agree with each one of you. Yes, and over here. Yes. Now I want to come into agreement with those of you who've had to struggle with the fear of death. Perhaps over these last weeks, others of our congregation have gone on to be with God. Maybe you have struggled with fear. The Bible says that fear has held us in torment of death. I want you to be free from that today. And if you've struggled with the fear of death, I want you to receive the key from Jesus today to go through that death in victory. If that's you today, lift your hand and look this way. I'm going to agree with many of you. Right now, set you free from death. Yes, here. And over here. Yes, yes, and here. Yes. Yes, right there. I agree with you. And you. Yes. And over here. Yes. You. And you here. Yes. And you, ma'am. Yes. And over in this section. Anyone over here. Yes, over here. I agree with you. I want you to receive the key. Now, most importantly, I want to agree with any that would say today, Pastor, I want to receive the key of David. I want my name to be written in the Lamb's Book of Life. I don't want to trust in my own efforts, my own religion. I don't want to trust in my own attempts to be good. I want Jesus Christ to be my Savior and my Lord. I want Him to put me in right standing with the Father. Jesus wants to give you that key, the key of salvation today. If that's you, I want you to lift your hand now and lift your eyes. Let me see them. Just hold them up there, and I'll agree with you as you look at them. I agree with you, ma'am. And you here, sir. Yes. And over here. You. Wave at me here in the center section. Lift your hand. And you here, ma'am. I agree with you right there. And back here. Yes. And you here, ma'am. I agree with you. Over here on the right. I agree with you here. That's right here, too. Would you two come together? I agree with both of you in the name of Jesus Christ. Others of you in the back. I see your hand up, I think, in the yellow dress. Yes. I agree with you. In Jesus' name. Others over here on the right. Anyone else? If you're looking at me, I'm going to acknowledge you. Wave your hand. I want the key of salvation. Anyone else this morning? Let me just see. Anyone else this morning? As I look around the congregation, the love of God is reaching into your heart now. Respond to Him. If I look at you, wave your hand at me and just say, Pastor, I want the key of salvation. Sir, is that why you're looking at me? All right. I agree with you. In Jesus' name. Look at me again, sir, if that's why you were looking at me. All right. The love of God reaches personally to you right now. He's writing your name. The name of your heart. Receive that in Jesus' name. All right? Others of you in the center. Once again, as I look around the auditorium. Side to side. It takes longer, dear ones, but God is touching lives. Anyone else? Look this way and wave your hand. If I've missed you now, it's not too late to respond to the love of God. Anyone else today? Over here in this section. Now, church, can I ask you all just to lift your hands out in front of you like this right now, please? Everyone, just go ahead. Now, Jesus, we acknowledge with thanksgiving that it's you who give the keys today. What a wonderful gift we've received, Lord. And we don't deserve a bit of it. But I thank you, Lord, with assurance today that that which you've given, Lord, you'll never take back.
