Discovering the Way I and II, the Lordship of Jesus Christ, the Authority of Scripture

This is North Way, tape number 538. This message, Discovering the Way, Part 1, was delivered by Pastor Jay Passavant of North Way Christian Community on Wednesday evening, September 3rd, 1986. Therefore, let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that leads to death. The faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment. God permitting, we will do so. A recent visit in the city of Pittsburgh with the family, in fact, it was during the Pittsburgh prayer celebration time. We were walking back toward where I had parked, which was several, it seemed, miles away, but probably just blocks away from where the parade had concluded. We walked back past one of those construction sites and were able to look down over the fence, through the fence actually, down into the deep, hollowed out foundation area where huge pylons were being sunk deep into the ground in preparation for a 30 or so story office complex. All of us probably would know tonight the fact that the taller the structure, the deeper the foundation that must be laid. This is no less true when it comes to matters of growth and maturity in the Christian life. I would just like to ask a question tonight. How many of you never really received systematic foundational teaching in your Christian life? Never really received it. You just kind of assimilated it. Go put your hand up. Look at that. Close to half the group. Never really, more than half, received foundational teaching in a systematic fashion. Beloved, I want to say to you, it's God's grace that you're still walking, that the enemy hasn't come along and robbed that seed from you. This is something that we know that the church throughout the nation, and particularly charismatic churches are missing out on, laying a clear, firm foundation in the things of God. There is a need to address these issues of foundational teaching so that we can go ahead and go on to the things that God has for us. We are committed here as a church, now having learned this over the years, we are committed to laying that foundation in everyone that God sends to us. We're committed to it. We believe that it's essential if we're to build the church that God wants to see built here at North Way. And I believe that over the next weeks as you're sitting here with us and you're learning these foundations and many of you will be refreshing your spirit in them, God's going to do some things. You're going to see some awakening in you of things you didn't know before. I don't know if you can read something three or four times in the Word of God and the fifth time it breaks into you. Well, that's what's going to happen. You're going to be learning things as you go. Don't think it's all old hat stuff. Even as I was preparing it, it comes alive because the Spirit of the Lord breathes on it and opens it up and makes it real to us. Now obviously today I won't begin to be exhausted even in this material and I'm going to ask you to do something. Take the time in your quiet time to go through each of these lessons after I've basically highlighted them as I'm going to do tonight. Get before the Lord with your Word and open the Bible to those verses and say, Lord, teach me from your Word. Plant this down in my spirit. I don't want to be rocked anymore. Paul says something in 1 Timothy chapter 4 that has, I think, great impact for everyone even though it's addressed particularly to leadership. In 1 Timothy chapter 4, he says in verse 15, Be diligent in these matters. Give yourselves wholly to them so that everyone may see your progress. I want to ask you a question. Do people see your progress? I had a gal come up to me on Sunday. Well, I really don't know her all that well. She might not even be here tonight and I don't want to embarrass her, but I don't really know her all that well. I just know her name. She told me of progress she's seen in my life over the last several months. That was an encouragement to me. Thankfully, she didn't come up and say, you used to be so lousy and now you're better. People should see the progress in your Christian life. They should see that you're not at the same place now that you were six months ago. You want to know why some people come into the fellowship and go rocketing right by you? You say, well, what is that person doing in leadership already? Because they have set themselves to systematically lay that foundation and to get before God and they're seeking the face of the Lord and they are moving in the spirit of God. Well, tonight I'm just going to believe God to bring us all up to speed in the Holy Spirit by laying this foundation together. It's going to be exciting because I know God wants to raise up much leadership out of this group that's here tonight. Let me just mention to you then, follow this up in your own study. And secondly, if you have questions after tonight, and we won't have time for many questions, if any, Dave Lloyd, our elder, who's been teaching Discovering the Way, will be meeting on Sunday morning, 9 o'clock, and he will go over questions and highlight things that I miss. And we will have this all videotaped. In fact, we've got two cameras. This is a momentous occasion. You folks on this side need to be on your best behavior because you're getting right in the wide-angle sweep over here. So smile a lot. If anyone nods off, nail them on, okay? Praise the Lord. Now, the first thing that I want to talk about in summary form is if you ask my opinion, it's the number one foundational truth that must be grasped if we are to go on and be all that God wants us to be, and that is that we must learn to embrace Jesus as Lord. Would you say Jesus is Lord? The Bible says if we say with our mouth, confess with our mouth that He is the Lord Jesus and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved. You want to know what the problem with the church is by and large today, beloved? The church at large has not embraced the Lordship of Jesus. Everybody serves something to God. Do you know it's so obvious to the person with discernment that the world serves itself? That your peers who are not believers in Jesus have their own set of masters. They may espouse some sort of liberty that they say they have. You know, I'm not part of an organized church, or I don't believe in institutional religion, something like that. But they have their own gods, and they serve their own masters. And God really impressed me as of late with the fact that there are only two kinds of people. Those who are serving Jesus and those who are serving some deceit of the enemy that will lead them to everlasting death. Now that's a very harsh way to view reality, but that's reality. You may think that good old boy that's just your buddy and tennis partner or golf partner, that he's just a good old guy and God will love him in the end. You need to see that he's serving Satan by lavishing his life, spending his life on himself. Everyone has a master. It's either Jesus or some expression of deceit, whether it's self or the world, corporate goals, pleasure, good times. Some people serve even a master of family. They build their whole life around their family. But God didn't say that our family was to be our Lord. He said we were to love our family. Jesus is to be the Lord of all those areas of our lives. You know, beloved, how many of you fell in love with somebody while you were a Christian? God bless you, all right. You knew the Lord and you fell in love. How many of you found that somebody that you fell in love with suddenly competing for affection in your thoughts? Sometimes, I mean, where Jesus is sure, he's there and he's your Lord, but suddenly that person preoccupied you. Well, beloved, let's be real frank and say without Jesus being Lord, other desires will rise up and compete for that affection in your life. And ultimately, the world is serving itself. Satan said, all these kingdoms are mine to give and I bestow them on those whom I please. And he's doing a good job of it in this country. The core of most struggles that I see in the church there are people who compartmentalize Christ. He becomes their belief. I believe that Jesus is my Savior. I believe there's a God. I don't even know if people would say, I believe there's a God. But to them, he's not Lord. I believe that Jesus died for me, but he's not their Lord. See, the problem is the church has taken the part about being saved and said, I want that. But it's taken the part about, pick up your cross daily and follow me. And they said, I don't really want that. That doesn't kind of fit into my lifestyle. Why did the Jews get to the Romans to say, crucify Jesus? What was their claim? They said, he claims a new kingdom. He's calling for allegiance other than to Caesar. You see, they knew that this Jesus was calling for a radical change. Not just some sort of religious thing. But a new kingdom. A new master. And a new king. Beloved, I'll tell you something. You want to see your circle of friends change quickly? Those of you who are newer believers. Stop saying, well hey, I found a new church I really like. And start saying, I've made Jesus Lord of my life. Whoa. One thing, it's just kind of acceptable. Alright, big deal. I go to church too. I just go down here and I go down to St. Somebody's. But say, I've made Jesus Lord of my life. And watch what happens to your friends. He's a stumbling block. To be Lord. But when a person meets Jesus as their Lord, their lives are changed. And I'm looking out tonight at many of you who I know, in the last 2, 3, 4 years, have found Jesus as your Lord. And your lives are changed. Before you were a good church person. Now He's Lord of your life. And you're falling in love with Him. And you're learning the joy of obeying Him. And it's changing your life and your heart. I can just give lots of illustrations. Let me move on and say, Why should we make Jesus Lord? Alright, this is Roman Numeral 1 in your outline. The first reason, it's who Jesus is. Why should we make Him our Lord? It's because of who He is. Now I said earlier, someone or something must rule you. If it's going to be self, it might be someone else. I've known people who've changed their whole life, everything in their life, because of another person. Have you known someone like that? They changed everything about themselves to try to please another person. They changed the way they looked. They changed what they did. They changed where they lived. They changed what they said. They changed what they wore to try to please somebody else. Because they were, in essence, owned by that person. Something is going to rule you. It might be another God or religion. I know people that are serving religion today and are miserable. Religion telling them, don't do this, do do that, come here, do that. It's all it is. It's just trying to please God. But beloved, how about this person? How about serving this Master? The one of whom it is said He was the Son of God, John 3, 16. And as well as God, the Son, Hebrews 1, 8. One who was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary, Matthew 1, 18-23. One who was perfect. One who obeyed everything that His Heavenly Father told Him to do, John 12. One who died for you and then physically rose from the dead to verify His claims. Why not, if you're going to serve someone, serve someone who fits that description? And if you are going to have a Master and we all do have a Master, why not let it be that Master? If you find someone who fits that criteria, someone other than Jesus, then serve Him. That's what I say to you tonight. Beloved, you know God knows us. Every one of us will come to a point of crisis in this decision. Now, most of you here tonight have come to that point, but maybe tonight God's saying, you know, there's an area of your life that Lordship's not really established. Do you know that all those disciples, Peter, Thomas, John, Paul, James, one of the others, every one of them faced crisis. Who is this? Who are you, Lord? Paul said. I'm Jesus in your person. Any time there's a change of ownership there's a struggle that goes on. Is that right? When you went to sell your home that you're living in or to move out of your apartment, what did you have to do? What did you have to do invariably? Clean it up, right Scott? Got to get it all signed up, ready to transfer it. And there's conflict. You're going to feel some sorrow when you move, I'm sure. There's memories and all that. But there's things that you know God's called you to that are different. And that's that way with our lives. There's things that have to happen. We have sorrow perhaps. But we've got to leave it to allow a new master to rule in our life. The second reason why Jesus should be Lord of our life is what He has done. Turn with me to chapter 2 of the book of Ephesians, would you? Ephesians chapter 2. I'm having to go quickly through this but I want to show you what Jesus has done for us. I'm going to read Ephesians 2 verse 1. As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins. Let's talk about our condition for just a moment. How much activity is a dead person engage in? How much can a dead person do to improve their looks? What can a dead person do to help with their arrangements for the funeral? Forgive me if this sounds offensive to anyone, but the point is absolutely nothing. And the Bible says look, you were dead. What did you do to contribute to your salvation, Paul? What did you do to contribute to your salvation, Jim? What did you do to initiate the process, Jack? You couldn't do anything, right? You were dead. Dead in the sin that separated us from God the Father. We used to live in this, the Bible says, when we followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air. Now, beloved, this is describing good old 1986 North Hills, USA. Okay? We're down here at Ross Park Mall in which you used to live when you followed the ways of the world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient. All of us lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our sinful nature and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature objects of wrath. You see, the nature of man, beloved, is an object of the wrath of God. Now that'll change the way you look at your friends. That's a heavy, heavy statement, eh? You know what our problem in evangelism is? We see people as being nice people. They are nice people. By man's standards we have, many of us, wonderful friends. You know, I have, I can think of people that I know are just, they're nicer in a lot of ways than people who have a lot of religious understanding, perhaps. But, see, God doesn't base it on the scale of 1 to 10. Well, 5 is okay and 3 is marginal but 2 is not going to make it. What is the standard of acceptance in the kingdom of God? What do you have to do to be accepted by God? You've got to be perfect. You've got to be perfect because God is perfect. You say, well, I can't be perfect. You can't be perfect, can you? So what do you have to do? You've got to find someone who can bring perfection and impart it to you. And that's what God did. You see, beloved? God had the answer and it says in verse 4 but God, or in this translation it just says but because of his great love for us, God I'd rather have it say but God because of his great love for us who is rich in mercy made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions. It is by, say it, grace that you've been saved. Oh, hallelujah. Let's thank the Lord for that. God, Lord, undeserved riches in Christ that saved us tonight and we thank you, Father. Oh, Lord, what glorious truth this is to us tonight. And so you see, beloved, it's because of what Jesus did. The Bible says in 1 John 3 for this purpose was the Son of God manifest to destroy the works of the evil one. John 10 He did not come to bring death or condemnation but he came that we might have life and life abundant. 1 John 3 5 He took away our sins the Bible says in Luke 19 10 the Son of Man came to seek and to save that which was lost. This is why we make Jesus Lord is because of what he did for us. And how did he do it? How did he do it? What was the means of what Jesus did for us to unite us with God? Say this word with me, atonement. That's probably as theological a word as we're going to get to tonight. Atonement. I've always been able to understand that word by breaking it into three little syllables and saying it this way, at one ment. At one ment. Atonement means the word atonement means that God in Christ God in Christ reconciled man to himself. He brought two that were separated together through the sacrificial death of Christ in the cross. God brought those of us flip over in Ephesians 2 and look down here. I want you to see something. Verse 12 Remember that at the time you were separate from Christ, excluded from citizenship in Israel and foreigners to the covenant of the promise without hope without God in the world. Beloved, do you see how lost we were? We weren't just a little bit marginal. We were lost. God now through Christ bridges the gap of that separation in what we call the atonement of Christ. I'll turn to 2 Corinthians 5 that's back about two or three blocks. Go left. 2 Corinthians 5 Move quickly here. Beautiful verses. Look at this. 2 Corinthians 5 Verse 19 Let me start with 18. 2 Corinthians 5.18 All this is from God who reconciled us to Himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation. That God was reconciling the world to Himself in Christ not counting men's sins against them. He has committed to us the message of reconciliation. What does it mean to be reconciled? Write this down. The literal meaning is enemies become friends. That's what to be reconciled means. Enemies become friends. Enemies become friends. One occasion in my experience I was involved in a political kind of pursuit in college running for an office on the campus that I attended. As part of that pursuit I ran against a particular fellow who had a long career in student politics. I had none. I had no real interest but by the time my senior year came I figured give it a shot. We'll see what happens. Actually it was a funny series of events that got me to this point. My fraternity at this point just pushed me into doing this. They said, we need something to put in our yearbook so you run for office. I got into this political process and there was three or four of us in it. I got the second to the most votes. No one got an absolute majority so we had to have a runoff. During the runoff all kinds of stuff came up. You know how political campaigns can be anywhere. This is what happened. It was this semi-smear slur political moron running for office and all this stuff. We were built up as these enemies. In an exciting movement actually I don't think he had too much to do with it. I just got elected. After that election I sat down with this fellow and we were by any description enemies. We just spent the next two or three hours talking about all the things that happened that brought about that alienation. We became friends. That was reconciliation. With us in God Beloved the stakes were entirely different. The illustration pales because we were separated from God and that means eternal death. God has said you are enemies because of sin. Now you've become friends. Here's why. Look with me. Verse 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. If you don't have that verse magic marked and highlighted in your Bible would you do that? God made him who had no sin to be sin for us so that in him we might become the righteousness of God. And so we were reconciled to God and we were redeemed. How many of you have heard the term redeemed? We were redeemed from our sin. Now what does it mean to be redeemed? How many of you used to have collect stamps when you went shopping? Most of you over 30 look like. They don't do that anymore. Well how about this? How many of you get AT&T opportunity calling? Well you can get that and you get so many points, right Russ? When you get enough points you can go in and redeem your points for merchandise or discounts or whatever it is. Well to redeem means to buy back, to purchase back. Beloved, we've been redeemed from the penalty of sin, bought back from bondage and the price was what? The precious blood of Jesus. God had to pay a price and it was the blood of his son Jesus. You can read about it in Ephesians 1, 7 or Acts 20, 28. Purchased with a price. In 1 Peter 1 about in verse 8, it says it's the most precious thing that was ever spent. The blood of Jesus. Now let me go ahead and conclude on this section. If we are redeemed beloved, we're his. We're his. We belong to him. We've been purchased by Jesus and we're part of a family. I don't know if families have benefits. Think of a very famous family you know. Let's say one we all would know like the Kennedy family. There's a whole thing about being in the Kennedy family. And there's a certain whole series of benefits, opportunities that just that name, entrees that that name would give them in exclusive circles around the country. An instant press conference anytime they wanted. Why? Because they're part of a family. Beloved, we're part of a family. We've been all purchased. Someone paid a price for each one of us. And now we are servants of the same master. Part of the same family. We have one Lord together and we have the benefits of that family relationship. What are the benefits? Here's a few of them. Eternal life. Freedom from judgment. Abundant blessing. The promise that all of our needs would be met. Communion with God. That's not a bad start for family members. This is what we've been promised by God. How do I make Jesus Lord of my life? I found three things. Every day begin by confessing and acknowledging. Jesus, today I enthrone you as Lord of my life. Remember I've been teaching, Lord teaches us to Lord, thy kingdom come. Come and rule on my throne this morning. I think it's wisdom to do it before you do anything else. Before you get out of bed. When you're laying there and nothing's moving. You know that time when you're sending signals to your body but it's not responding? It's like the other morning, right? What do you do? You say, Lord, right now I just give you myself. Be Lord of my life. Say it to the Lord. Tell him. Confess it with your lips. Number two, order your life so that your priorities reflect his Lordship. Do you want to know why the church just keeps dragging along in general? Because the church has not ordered itself reflecting the priorities of Jesus' Lordship. Prayer must become a priority. Being in fellowship must be a priority. Ever since I've been a serious Christian beloved, I've made being with other Christians a higher priority than playing golf. Or riding a bicycle. Or working on my car. Or working in a job. It was a higher priority for me to be with other believers because God said they're my family. Because God said that we were joined together organically. I would never listen to you. You say, well, this is easy for you to say because this is where you work. But I would never move anywhere because some corporation told me to do it. Unless God told me to do it. I'm going to stand here and tell you, those of you who work for corporations and the corporation says jump and you say how high and where, you are missing God's will for your life. You don't serve the corporation. You serve a higher master. Now if God says, do it like he just did with Ken and Faye Hobbs. They sought the Lord. The Lord said, this is my will for you. Then by all means, go and do it. You say, well, you don't understand, Jay. I have to make a living for my family. The Jesus that I serve is never going to let you fail in providing for your family if you're serving him. Never. You've got to make him Lord. You've got to give him that priority in your life. You've got to order your life to serve him. And thirdly, you've got to obey his word. How do you make Jesus Lord? Well, beloved, it says in John 14, 15, those who love me keep my commandments. Do you love Jesus tonight? Do you love Jesus tonight? No, I don't love him. Let me ask it slow. Do you love Jesus tonight? Glory to God. Well, he said if you do, then keep my commandments. He didn't say if you love me, feel good about me. If you love me, drive an old car and put bumper stickers on it. He said if you love me, keep my commandments. And beloved, let me leave you with this. Those who make Jesus Lord of their lives and give him preeminence in their lives have this one total assurance that from that moment on you become his responsibility. God is responsible for your life as long as Jesus is Lord. And I know of no safer, more secure, more fruitful place to be. Hallelujah. Stand together. Praise the Lord. Let's sing that chorus, you are Lord, you are Lord, you are risen from the dead. You are Lord, you are Lord, you are risen from the dead and you are Lord. Every knee shall bow. Every knee shall bow. Every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord. Is he Lord tonight? Is he Lord of every area of your heart? Home, relationships, job, fellowship, attitudes. Does he own your heart? Or have you just let him in part of the way? Make him Lord of your life. Make him Lord of your life. Oh, Jesus. Set him on the throne of your heart tonight. In finances, in your marriage, in your ministry, make Jesus Lord. Let's confess that. Jesus, be the Lord of my life. Be the Lord of my heart. Be the Lord of my family. Be the Lord of my finances. Be Lord of all. Oh, Lord. Hallelujah. Praise God. Amen? Amen. Let's turn the page. Don't be surprised. This is one lesson. We have two lessons. Turn the page. This will be a 15-minute lesson. Don't laugh, Jim. I can do it in 15 minutes. I need to do this or we'll never, ever stay on track. And this really, beloved, is a lesson that I think I can reduce down very briefly because your notes will fill out what I am not able to cover. And there's really just a few things I have to highlight on this lesson because I think most of us as Christians understand the importance of the Word of God. But there are a few specific things I want to address in order to clarify where we stand here at North Way in this issue, some of these issues, and what might be important as you walk out your relationship with Christ. Something occurred to me today. I never thought of this before. At least I don't recall having thought of it. Of course, there's a lot of things I don't recall having thought about anymore. That's starting to bother me. And maybe I have. Do you realize, and see if you agree, you more logical, rational, intellectual types. All your hands should be up in the air. I thought about this. It seems to me that either this book should be held in the highest esteem and cherished as the most profound physical object that we could possibly have. That is to say, it should be embraced and studied and pursued and digested and meditated upon and held dear and listened to or it should just be thrown out. Because as I thought about it this book says that it's the word of God. This book says of itself that God breathed it. 2 Timothy 3.16 Either this book is nuts You see what I'm saying? Follow this with me now. Rationally speaking, either this has made a claim of itself that no other book has ever made. I mean either it's goofy, it's ridiculous, it's a fairy tale myth and should be ignored or it should be cherished and loved and embraced. I never had seen quite the power of that. You see, the problem is that most of us unfortunately and definitely most of the church has put this book kind of in the middle. Sure, it's the word of God. Sure, it's the Bible. I'm just going to drop over from here today to 1 Chronicles 8 These are the kings who reigned in Edom. When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad defeated Midian and Saul died and Belhanan of Abkor succeeded him. That's our quiet time. Now, listen, are you with me? You see, there isn't a middle ground with this book. Either it's the most incredible thing that man could ever possess that's my belief In fact, now I understand more profoundly why people die for it. Why people will go through armed guards at border crossings surreptitiously walking in to take this treasure because it's the word of God. It's Theanopsis is the word in the Greek God breathed. He breathed it out. It came from Him. It represents our God. It's a physical representation. It's the only one. You know why we don't have any icons up here? You know why there's nothing hanging down here with people on it? You know why we don't do that? Because there is no image of God. But the image I see in all your hearts, I see in you the glory of my King. But I've got this. And this is a real physical image of our God. It's the word, the logos, the revelation of God to us. Now, some over the last decades have sought to make this book less than God's word. They have said, well, when you are in the right frame of mind, it can come to you like that. Or one school of well-known theologians, who I studied some in seminary, said well, it's the word of God when the Holy Spirit makes it the word of God to you. Or it's the word of God if you're reading it as the word of God. Or it's the word of God in some particular areas. Beloved, it's the word of God whether you never read it. It's the word of God no matter how you're feeling. It's the word of God no matter what it's come from and no matter what area it's addressing in your life. It's the word of God. Now, there's been a lot of debate about what's known as, is the Bible inerrant? Who's heard of the inerrancy debate? Well, that just in essence is this. The word inerrancy means without error. And there are a lot of people who believe, well, the Bible is really a great book, but there are some mistakes in here, you know, after all. And they'll find something that they discover of some of the genealogies of the kings back there in that Chronicles passage they read in their quiet time. And they'll say, this doesn't exactly match up. And what they'll do, now listen, here's why it's important. You see, if you begin to take the Bible apart and say, well, some of it's right and some of it has error, then what has to eventually be the outcome of that kind of thinking? Well, then you don't have any standard. When do you decide when it's right? I mean, maybe it was an error when it said that Jesus took sin on Him for us. Maybe that really didn't mean that. Maybe He, you know, just asked God to forgive it all. You know what I'm saying? We don't know when we'll draw that line. Maybe it was an error when it said that in the end there would be a hell for those who rejected Christ and a heaven for those who received Him. Maybe everyone's going to be saved. Well, maybe it was an error when it said that fornication was really sin. Actually, I think God's compassionate, He knows how much we need to have that sexual release every once in a while. Maybe just an error there. I'm not making these things up. These are all things I've heard. And the Bible is the inerrant Word of God that is without error. And I believe that. And I believe it not just because I'm trying to be some sort of hyper-fundamentalist. I believe it for four reasons and here they are. This is all I'll be able to cover tonight. Number one, I believe it's the Word of God without error inspired because God breathed it out. Because it says of itself that not one jot or tittle would ever pass away. Matthew 5.18 The Source is Almighty God. That's why I believe it's without error. 2 Timothy 3.16 All Scripture Underline all, okay? Not just the New Testament but all Scripture is God breathed. Secondly, I believe it's inerrant because Jesus the Lord Jesus Himself affirmed the totality of the Scriptures. In John 10.35 He said the Scripture cannot be broken.
