SUMMARY

This sermon explores the Resurrection Realities, asserting that Christ's victory over the grave is the keystone of the Christian faith. It explains that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is currently working to quicken and empower the lives of believers. The sermon concludes that the reality of the resurrection provides an eternal hope that should drive believers to invest their lives in others.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

Statements of our belief, my soul followeth, inviting each other to come and worship, saying I will bless the Lord, and you know a lot of times our worship needs to be part of what we tell ourselves, this is what God wants us to do, because he deserves the very best of all of our hearts, right? Right. My soul followeth, heart after beat, early in the morning I will rise up and seek thee. And because thou has been my help in the shadow of my wings, I will rejoice, rejoice, rejoice. My soul followeth, heart after beat, early in the morning I will rise up and seek thee. And because thou has been my help in the shadow of my wings, will I rejoice, rejoice, rejoice. And because thou has been my help in the shadow of my wings, will I rejoice, rejoice, rejoice. Let's worship, let's glorify him. Let's give to him our praise. For that's what we deserve. Come, let's sing to him. Yes, come, let his glory now be seen. Come, let's give to him our praise. For that's what we deserve. Come, let's sing to him. Yes, come, let his glory now be seen. Thou art exalted far above all the earth. Let's exalt his name all together. O Lord, I exalt, I exalt, I exalt. Would you just speak your praise to the Lord? Just lift your voice and speak. We exalt you, we exalt you. We exalt you, we exalt, we exalt. Lord, that you would be exalted over us. Lord, we bless your name. The many names of who you are, Lord, that represent who you are in our lives. Lord, we bless you for that. And we ask that by your Holy Spirit, you would move among us, Lord, and show us more of that name, Jesus' name. Thank you. Let's do this, shall we? Let's turn right now in twos and threes. And let's just do a little bit of blessing of God, shall we? You have something tonight I'm sure to be thankful for. How many of you can say, at least one thing good happened to me this week? Well, you're here tonight. You can thank him for that. And I want to just turn and just say, grab your hand with someone and say, let's thank God for these things tonight. Go ahead and bless his name. Go ahead. Give him praise. Let's continue that spirit of praise for a moment. Shadow of your wings My voice with gladness sings To you alone, Lord, my heart clings In the shadow of your wings And my lips shall sing your praise While my hands to you I raise For your kindness follows me always In the shadow of your wings And my lips shall sing your praise While my hands to you I raise For your kindness follows me always In the shadow of your wings Our upraised voices and hands at this moment declare our trust in you. Worthy to be praised is our God. And ever faithful to his word. We bless you tonight, Lord. And thank you that we have reason tonight to give thanks to God. And your word says it is a good thing to give thanks to the Lord, to declare his praiseworthiness in the sanctuary. And so we do it tonight, Lord, with joy. And everyone sing. Amen. You all may be seated. There's hundreds of little bodies, it seems, around tonight. We're about to dismiss the children. Kids, I know you're like, how many kids just like to clap every once in a while? Good. All right. Now that you're warmed up, I want the kids to be part of welcoming any visitors that have come tonight to be with us. We always have some folks, and tonight I'm sure we have some as well. Maybe this is your first time ever to North Way. I am amazed at why people come to the church You may have heard the topic tonight is on death. You want to see what's ahead for you. You may have come tonight because you heard that the topic's on the resurrection, and you're hoping that's what's ahead. How many of you are hoping that's what's ahead for you? Well, tonight you're going to find out. But if you're a visitor, we want to welcome you and give you a great North Way welcome applause. Are we ready? I want the kids to be really ready for this. So visitors, if you'll wave your hand, one of the ushers will come right now and give you one of these packets. Any visitors here tonight? Just wave your hand. Let us welcome you. All right, great. There's one. Any others here tonight? There's another one. Over here, anyone? Wave your hand. Very good. Did you get that one? All right, good. Well, thank you for coming tonight, and if you'd be so kind. Are you warm, Gail? You're really warm. All right. Can we check that, Fred, and make sure we have the air conditioning going, because it's warm. Visitors, in here is some great information for you, and a card we'd like you to fill out sometime before the evening is over to let us know that you were here. Okay, kids, you did a great job, most of you. Let's stand. Young men, young ladies. Jeff, where are you? I know you're here tonight. Any special dismissal instructions, other than I needed to say, by the way, I fear that we may have misled a few of you about the need for teachers, and we do need some more teachers. Yeah, I went over the list last night. I think I have six more positions on Sunday morning, and a few more on Wednesday night. All right, so I know a lot of you are praying about it. This would be a great time to say, I'll come up, find out what those positions are, see if that's where the Lord wants me to be, and do that. Where can they find you after the service? I'll be in the back. No, that's a big bet. Where will you be? In the gym. I'm usually standing in there, keeping control. Tremendous, okay. All right, you want to pray, and then you can dismiss the kids. Sure, let's pray. Can you put your hand on a child that's near you there? It doesn't matter how old they are. Thanks. Father, we ask tonight that in the name of Jesus that you would anoint the teachers which are going to teach these children tonight, that, Father, not only in word, but in deed that they would learn tonight, that in their actions that they would learn about you and in everything that they do. Father, I pray for a spirit of obedience tonight and I pray against a spirit of confusion. And, Father, I just thank you, Lord, for what you're going to do tonight back there. In Jesus' name. Okay, 5th and 6th graders, come on down. All right, while they're doing that, keep calling them off, Jeff. 3rd and 4th. Boys over here and girls over here. Okay, 1st and 2nd grade, don't run. Okay, kindergarten. Fives, 4s and 5s. Scooters. And rainbows on this side over here. All right. I hope you all feel really privileged. For the Lord to entrust so many kids. We had 320 of these guys on Sunday morning, between 2 and 11. That's a lot of kids. Between... All right. Folks, let me share quickly a couple of things that have come that you may not know about. We only have 25 tickets left out of 2,800 for Thy Kingdom Come. So the kingdom is going to come and go and you're going to miss it unless you can get out there to the registration table. You know, we're going to have a lineup, a concert lineup. Well, that's all that's left. That's what I understand. So if you're not already going to go, you need to make sure you get those tickets today or you won't get them. So I'm positive of that. We're going to pray for Thy Kingdom Come tonight in just a little bit, but I think it's thrilling, don't you, that the believers of this city are going to gather together and I think it's going to be a very powerful time. I want us to be praying fervently over the next couple of days for the Lord to have His way as it's not just praise and worship, but it's also a call to holiness and to purity. So you'll want to be believing the Lord for that. Next, leadership. I know we're making a major communication attempt here, leaders, but still some will forget because you're going to go out probably Friday night and say, gee, I don't want to get up the next day, but you must, must be here. Really important time for you to catch the next step of the shaping of the vision of caring. Folks, as you'll hear tonight, our vision to care isn't just because we want to have groups, folks. How many believe caring is life and death for people? If you hadn't been cared for when you were a young Christian, would you have made it? Probably not. If you hadn't been cared for when you fell into the rut, into the pit on the side of the road, if someone wasn't there to pick you up, we need to do that. We've got some exciting things to share with you. Eight o'clock will definitely be done, probably before ten o'clock, so you can be on your way, but we need you all to be here. Please make a point of it. Next. All right, I've got to check this again. How many men are here? North Way is one of two sponsoring churches for Ed Cole on May 13th. Right now, I'm embarrassed to say that. I don't in any way want to say, men, you ought to come. I just need to say to you, Ed Cole speaks on things about being the head of your household, about dealing responsibly with your family, with your finances, how to care for your wife, those kinds of things, as well as anyone I know. We are basically making it easier for the people of the East, because it's in Monroeville, but it's not that far. It's about 35 minutes from right here. Please, if you haven't considered this, consider it today. Joe Trapani, once again, I know you're here. Stand up, Joe. There he is. Joe will be at the registration table. It's only $10. If you want to come, if you don't have $10, tell Joe, we'll cover it for you. We just want you to be there if it's at all possible, but we need you to sign up. I know it's a lot of stuff, but we need to get it out of the way. How many of you were not here on Sunday? Let me just see your hand for a second. All right, ushers. The ushers are putting their hand up. Put your hand down, Fred, and get all these things out, would you? I know where you are. Hold your hand up. We want to give you one of these. If you weren't here Sunday, this is an update report on where we are with our property. Well, that's amazing. Put them way up again, everybody, so I can just see this. There's about 100 people or close to it, maybe 80 people that weren't here on Sunday. They're here tonight. That's great. Glad you could be here and get one of these. As soon as you get it, put it under your chair or under your seat. Don't read it during the service. I'm looking at you. Please don't read it. It'll be there when you're done, just the same. All right, finally, at least in what I have in my hand, we have finished five weeks of teaching on the value of companies, in search of company, but we did not really give you a specific point of application. Now, on your seats should be a little handout like this. Everyone pick it up if it's on your seat. If you are relatively new to the church, as many of you are, you'll want to get one of these little booklets called Plugging In. Ushers, are we ready with these now? If you're not sure what these groups are all about, all these 50 or so ministries listed here, wave your hand and the ushers will run up and give you a booklet. Go ahead, don't be embarrassed. Here we go. A whole bunch of them are needed, man. You need one of these booklets. Now, these things are always available, but many people just don't see them. Now, I won't take time tonight to detail everything, but folks, listen, everyone should hear me. There's been some changes. We've added, I think, 11 ministries and consolidated several others, so the net gain is just a couple, but there are some new ministries here. For example, Pointman for Vietnam vets. It's a new ministry to Vietnam vets. We've got them all up there. All right, good. The Business Council for those who want to help us in the growing administrative area. The Handicap Ministry. How many of you know someone that's handicapped? Are we doing enough as a church for the handicapped? I don't think so. We have a great building for Handicap Ministry, but we're not really doing enough yet. Light Crew. It's a growing ministry as we continue to expand that outreach. The parking lost has been found. All right, well, how many are glad for the men and ladies that are helping us in the parking lot? Amen. Go ahead and give them a hand. This Sunday, by the way, if you want to get a good parking space, get here early. Still will be room, but you need to get here early. All right. Do we have any more up there? All right, parents. How many folks here don't have teenagers? All right, this is a support type group for you. If you have teenagers and they're not perfect, you may be interested. Does that cover everybody? There we go. Anything else? All right. Now, folks, lastly, on this issue of this booklet, these ministries are very, very much in need of your participation if you desire it, and they're very open to you is what I'm trying to say. They're really looking for people who can be part of what they're doing, so consider this. You say, what do I do if I find something I'm interested in? Let's say I'm interested in helping in the grounds area. All you have to do is take this and fill your name out and put it in the offering box or in the basket tonight, and someone will contact you and give you more information. You're not committing the rest of your life. You're just saying I'm interested. Don Horwick is holding a tape. The 80 or so people that put your hand up and said you weren't here, because of the nature of this teaching on Sunday, a number of people have encouraged me to make this tape available to you. When I talk about finances, it's probably as directly as I ever have in our church, and we're going to make this tape available to you tonight. You can have one. You don't have to pay for it. We just want you to hear it because it will help you determine if you're in sync with what God's doing here in our church, and I was encouraged by a number of folks to do this tonight, so I want to make that available. How many do we have? We only have about 20 here, but if you want one, just wave your hand right now and the ushers will give you one. I knew that we were not going to have enough, so we'll be making some more during the service, and you can pick them up, those who don't get them. All right. There's some over here. Okay. Once again. Pardon? All right. If you didn't get one, wave your hand again. About 30 or 40 more. Okay. We'll have them ready for you by the end of the service if you can pick one up at the doors. All right. Bless you guys. Who's received an answer to prayer this week? Jack, come on up. This is kind of bold. I'm putting you on the spot. Are you willing to share it? There you go. Tell us what happened. Well, it's a long story, but I'll shorten it. My dad had a malignancy removed from his colon in August, and within the last 46 weeks, he'd been having some other symptoms. And early last week, they did a cystoscope on him to remove a tumor from his bladder. Well, they weren't real satisfied with that. They didn't like what they were seeing through the cystoscope, and they decided that they were going to do some more tests. On Wednesday, they did a CAT scan, and on Thursday, they did a colonoscopy because they were concerned that the cancer had gone back to the colon. Well, I had committed to go to Columbus with Pastor Jim and some others for a conference and counseling. The surgeon told me that, go ahead, go. Don't worry about it. He told me that he probably wouldn't be operating until Monday. Well, I realize now that was just his way of not having me renege on my commitment or be worried. Well, that didn't keep me from worrying when I found that he was going to be operated on Friday. But we prayed Friday morning, and my concern was that there would be, that it may have spread back to the colon. And when they operated Friday morning, they took a good long time in checking the tissue and everything else. They took a portion of the bladder, but all the tissue around it that they had sent out was fine. There was nothing anywhere else. So we're praising God that the surgery went smoothly and well and that the cancer was contained in that one spot. And he's recovering quickly. He's grumpy, as I expected him to be. But when he gets out of the hospital, he'll probably go to camp for a week. That's great. Good. Thanks, Jack. I'd like to ask us right now, how many of you know someone that's struggling with cancer? As part of our prayer circle time, I want us to rebuke cancer tonight. I want to rebuke cancer off of the congregation and members of this church, but off of anyone that you would bring before the Lord. You know, the Bible says that, and I read this, in fact, I'll just give you a little glimpse into tonight's message in 1 Corinthians 15. As I was preparing for tonight, it says, verse 24 of 15, Then the end will come when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father, after he has destroyed all dominion, authority, and power. You see, Jesus reigns. We know that the cross was the ultimate defeat of every power of darkness. Amen? But how many of you know we still see the outworking of evil and sin? And cancer is one of those things. It's one of the results that lingers with us because of man's sinfulness. But we have authority. We have authority in Christ. And in the last day, cancer will be gone. That's what this is saying. In the last day, there will be no more cancer. But it's up to us right now to be bold enough to believe that even in the face of negative, hurtful symptoms, that God cares and that God still rules. And we can bring that power to bear on those who have cancer. So as part of your prayer circles here in the next five or six minutes, pray against that. And folks, believe me, there are people healthy, whole today, only because someone prayed for them. And that one that you may think isn't going to make it may very well make it just by the faith that tonight you agree with someone else. In addition, let's pray for God's visitation at Thy Kingdom Come. And then Sunday, as many hundreds of people visit with us, most likely to hear a message that I'm sure will challenge us. But pray for those specific things and any need you have as well. Let's stand together, shall we? Groups of four, three or four are best. Pray for the next five or six minutes. But pray in the name of Jesus for His victory. To Thee we ascribe glory To Thee we ascribe honor To Thee we ascribe power and majesty Holy is the Lord Let's join together. To Thee we ascribe glory To Thee we ascribe honor To Thee we ascribe power and majesty Holy is the Lord To Thee we ascribe glory To Thee we ascribe honor To Thee we ascribe power and majesty Holy is the Lord To Thee we ascribe glory To Thee we ascribe honor To Thee we ascribe power and majesty Holy is the Lord Holy is the Lord Praises to the Lamb Praises to the Lamb, we give our song Praises to the Lamb, we give our song Praises to the Lamb Praises to the Lamb Glory to the Lamb Jesus Jesus, the wonder that you are the Lamb that was slain and yet the shepherd that leads us God, thank you for the miracle of your personal love for us the sacrificial love that was spilled out through your blood Lord, we rejoice in who you are this night Father, we are linked to one another, God not just for the short term, Lord but for the long, long, eternal hall of things, Lord and I pray tonight, Father God that what your word has revealed as to the destiny of mankind would cause us just to be a little more mindful, Lord of how we can help encourage one another along the way we persevere in receiving the fullness of that which you've purposed, and not only, Lord, by planning it but by giving your life that it would happen even the redemption of all mankind Father, I thank you that tonight the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is working in our mortal bodies to quicken us and give us life, Lord and to put sin to flight and to cause us to have strength to overcome and weariness and discouragement Lord, may that same power that raised Jesus from the dead be released in a mighty fashion in our hearts tonight Father, I thank you Shoulder your head bowed for a moment think of that particular pinpoint location in your life right now where you'd want to see the power of God I know the Lord showed me something today where I need the power of God I haven't been able to make it in my own discipline and he showed me where I've got to get out of myself and into him Where is that for you? Just say, Jesus, right now, bring that resurrection power into that place Jesus, bring it Bring it in, Jesus Fairest Lord Jesus Ruler of all O thou, thee will I cherish Thee will I, thy soul's glory charge There's still a wood Out in the blooming green O Jesus, sin's terror Jesus, sin's glory Is the sunshine. There is still the moonlight. And all the twinkling starry Jesus shines bright Jesus shines pure. Then all the angels did forsake him Lord of the nations Son of God Heaven's Son of Man Glory and honor Praise and ovation Lord of forever Glory in God's Glory and bless your name, Lord Glory and honor and praise and adoration Jesus is Lord Jesus, precious Thank you, my God Lord, we look to the day when we will assemble with those from every tribe and tongue. And every nation and kingdom around this world, Lord And with one voice Extol your name forever and ever. May it be so, Lord, and may you come Information about death and life hereafter from anyone who hasn't been there But people do it, thinking people Professional, intellectual people They'll pick up a New Age book that says some theory about this or that And that becomes their little thing, at least for a while George Burns said, I don't believe in death. But how many know he will? Will Rogers laughed at death Until his plane crashed So on and on it goes, everyone dies The answer is Really, the question, I should say, is what are we going to do about it? And the answer is what I'm going to share with you tonight. Now, the Bible paints a very different picture about death Than these little quips that I've mentioned tonight First of all This is number one, that little three-point outline The Bible says that death is the final certainty It is a certainty for everyone Hebrews 9, 27 It is appointed unto man once to die And then, the judgment Everybody will die No one's going to miss out on it. Because God ordained it to be that way The will to live and to fight death is instinctive. Have you ever seen a creature in the animal kingdom Or the insect world, fighting death? It's unbelievable Just to watch how nature works And to see one animal fight instinctively To draw on these almost incredible powers to resist death But it's in there The will to fight death is in every one of us And that's because, number two Death is a mortal enemy Death is always an enemy The Bible says this I just read you the scripture Verse 26 The last enemy to be destroyed is death 1 Corinthians 15 and 26 You see, death that takes children. Destroys marriages Cuts short lives in their prime time Death that preys on those who work too long To enjoy life's rewards Death is always an enemy And God, you see, is not the author of death He's the author of life Sin brought disease and death Into the world It was not part of God's original design It was allowable because of man's free choice And man chose it And when he chose it, he brought death into the world That's what the Bible says. And the Bible also tells us that the rest of creation Is longing to be free from death Read about it in Romans 8 Verses 19 through 21 I love the Phillips translation It says, all of creation is on its tiptoes Looking for the emergence of the sons of men Because when we emerge. What it's talking about is when we finally are glorified All of creation will be free from the curse of death Won't it be great? Nothing's going to die Number three, the Bible also records That death will be overcome Death will be overcome Death is not the final word For those who are in Christ 1 Corinthians 15 and what do I have up there? Verse 54 Death has been swallowed up in victory If you've ever been at the funeral Of a vibrant believer There is something that happens there That's so much different from the funeral Of a person who doesn't know the Lord And all I can tell you that it is Is that death has been swallowed up in victory. There's still a corpse there There's still lots of flowers And there's still tears flowing But death has been swallowed up in victory More than any of us can ever really understand God has determined that those who trust in Him Will not be haunted by the fear of death Hebrews 2.15 said that we were in lifelong bondage Until we came to the place where we trusted in God Now the basis of all of our confidence That death will be swallowed up in victory. Is the resurrection of Jesus That's what this passage is about I don't want to take the 7 or 8 minutes That would be necessary to read the whole thing But let's look at verse 12 We read through verse 11 last week If it is preached that Christ has been raised from the dead How can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? You see the Corinthians were a strange lot. The Corinthians, believe it or not Were trying to discount the resurrection Saying that they didn't really need it Because they spoke in tongues. They were really into this tongues thing They felt that that was a symbol Of being already spiritually translated And so they weren't sure they really needed This resurrection business Some of them were saying that Verse 13, if there is no resurrection of the dead Then Christ has not been raised Now I want you to see what happens here There are 5 things that happen If there is no resurrection If we don't have Easter folks If there is no Easter This is what happens Number 1, all preaching is useless You don't need any more preachers That makes me sad Christ is still dead, number 2 You are still in your sin, number 3, verse 17 Those who have died are lost, verse 18 Now look at verse 19 We of all men should be pitied Let me tell you something If there is no resurrection And if you are not going to come back after you die You are pitiful You say, well I would be a Christian Even if it was the only thing that there was Anyone ever ask you this question? If they found Jesus' bones in a grave somewhere. Would you still be a Christian? No one has really thought about this, I can tell. Tell your neighbor If they found Jesus' bones in a grave somewhere Would you still be a Christian? Tell your neighbor the answer to that question Carl, tell them Just assume they found them, alright? Don't argue with me now Just assume they found them Alright, what's your answer? You would still be a Christian? How many say yes, I'd still be a Christian? How many, I should say How many would still be a believer? How many would not be? This is war, folks We've got war here Yeah, and how many are still on the fence? Well maybe I would, I'll see what my friends are doing Listen, Paul says If there's no resurrection Then Christ is dead And you're still in your sin And you're lost If they found Jesus' bones somewhere, folks I'm bailing out You're going to come now? Okay He's going all along Think about it, folks The resurrection is the keystone doctrine of our faith We've got to have that nailed down And that's for real Now, let me show you something They're never going to find his bones, alright? So don't worry about it, sir There's no bones there Some of you are getting real nervous. They're not going to find it It will never happen Because he's not there 500 people witnessed him alive And touched him and were with him Hundreds of others didn't even get recorded I mean, it's a fact But that resurrection is absolutely essential If we're to have any hope at all That this death thing isn't going to catch us In fact, look what it says Verse 20, can I read it for you? But Christ has indeed been risen from the dead. The first fruits of those who have fallen asleep It's a fact Indeed means, in fact, he's been risen. So now it says that he's going to exercise that resurrection power Until the last enemy, verse 26, to be destroyed is death Now, what happens? What happens at the point of death? What's the sequence of events for the believer? For those of you who still believe What's the sequence of events? Well, the Bible first of all tells us That there is an immediate sense of consciousness. That we are resurrected Paul says, if I'm apart from the body I'm home with the Lord Simple as that. We read about it, Philippians 1.23 I desire to depart and be with Christ The moment you close your eyes Finally here on this earth That next moment, you open them In your conscious, eternal state The real you Not the body parts, folks Not this thing But the real you wakes up And, you know, how many of you have seen visualizations of this? You've seen it on TV programs now The life after life kinds of things And people watch their bodies coming up out of Well, we don't know about any of that All we know is that once we close our eyes In final death When we open them again That next moment We are consciously resurrected Jesus said to the thief that was crucified with him Today, you will be with me in paradise Now, when we awake We're consciously there The second point For every believer Go ahead Is that Jesus is there with us How many of you know that will be pretty nice? There he is I don't even think we're gonna have to look for him He's not gonna be tending his garden Some people have painted pictures about Jesus there When you're walking across the bridge And he's at the other side All I believe is that The moment you awaken. You're consciously aware. And the next thing you're gonna sense Is that hand on your shoulder I don't really believe this I've heard people say That they saw the hand of God Reaching out to them I've been at bedsides of people who've said I can see Jesus. Reaching his hand It's one of those things like Corrie ten Boom says I don't think you'll know it until You need it Or as she said You don't get your ticket Until you're ready to get on the train. But Jesus will be there Number three And this one's a little tougher In terms of exact Specific doctrine A little more difficult I should say What happens To this Resurrection body This glorified body Well there's two schools of thought here One says Next That you will immediately receive Your glorified body. That's a one stage kind of deal You awaken Jesus is there. And you are finding yourself No longer in this decrepit Declining Disgusting body Alright But you are immediately clothed with a garment That is Does not wear out Does not get sick This body. That you can't really describe Is super human In fact Anyone here have a living bible You can go ahead and confess that It's alright You wouldn't put your hand up if you did It says there It says right in there That First Corinthians 15 43 and 44 That your body will be like Superman You gotta love the living bible It's the best thing you can come up with Alright. And One school believes it happens right away The other school though And I have to say. The other school that's out there. That seems to be a little more prominent Believes the two stage theory Which is Your spirit lives on recognizably And the glorious body.
