Book of Philippians XI

34:42

SUMMARY

Jesus offers the Holy Spirit to anyone who is thirsty, promising that it will result in streams of living water flowing from within the believer. The baptism of the Holy Spirit provides supernatural power for witnessing and is often accompanied by the gift of tongues as seen at Pentecost. This teaching serves to prepare the congregation for a time of ministry where they can seek the Spirit’s fullness for their own lives.

FULL TRANSCRIPT

We continue to find ways to make a difference. You can even participate in the outreach to people on the Fourth of July, if you want to be part of the Fourth of July Choir and Orchestra. Time is now. Get involved this Sunday at 1 o'clock, right after the second service. And we're getting ready. We're it, by the way. We're not bringing in somebody great, we're going to be somebody great. Alright, so that's what we want to do. But we are bringing someone in for the fireworks. Although I think I've got some people here, my dad showed me once how to do stuff like that. Well, let's turn in our Bible, shall we, to... Gee, I have so many scriptures tonight, I don't know where to tell you to turn first. Let's turn to John 7, that's going to be sort of our keystone text. I only want to teach for 25 minutes or so, because I want to allow time for ministry in the lives of people. And I know, I'm just confident that some of you came just for this subject. I remember when I was searching in my own life to know what the fullness of the Spirit was all about. And I went everywhere, every time someone was teaching on this subject, because I wanted to know. And I know some of you came tonight because you'd like to know how you can be ministering to others on this matter. And some of you came because it's Wednesday night, and that's what you do. And I respect that and appreciate that. Now, if it's none of the above, I so hope you have a great time. I don't know what you're expecting, but anyhow. All right, John 7, let's look at it together. Verse 37. On the last and greatest day of the feast, Jesus stood and said in a loud voice, If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from within him. By this he meant the Spirit, the Holy Spirit, whom those who believed in him were later to receive. Up to that time, the Spirit had not been given, since Jesus had not yet been glorified. And now, holding that place, or at least putting something there where you can turn back, let's look over to Acts 1. Verse 4. On one occasion, while he was eating with them, he gave them this command. Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have heard me speak about. So Jesus was frequently talking about this. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Verse 8. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 2. And when the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit. How many of them? And began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them. You know, when someone sets out to find a doctor, he or she is immediately embarking on what can be a rather challenging task and not confusing. Or not the least bit confusing, I should say. There are many, many people out there who are called doctors. Isn't that true? Some of them are called doctors because they've earned an MD, a medical doctor degree. And so they're licensed and certified to do certain things. There are some out there that are PhDs, doctors of philosophy, who have earned degrees, graduate degrees, which further equip them to do certain things. There are other kinds, and they can be in the field of medicine as well. There can be doctors of osteopathy, DOs. They're doctors. There can be other kinds, right? Oh, I'd say maybe it was two years ago, I had some trouble with one of my big toenails. And I finally started, you know, doctors. Well, why don't you go to a podiatrist? I'd never been to a podiatrist. Well, I found out, you know, that they're called doctors too. They've got a certain regimen that they have to fulfill. It's less rigorous than an MD, but it's pretty rigorous. The chiropractor's a doctor. And the optician's a doctor. And how many of you know, there's Dr. Carroll, and Dr. David, and Dr. You know, we just, practically everybody. Who am I?
