A Personal Prayer Ministry

I'm going to read in Joshua chapter 6, if you'd like to turn there. It's really sort of a foundation point for tonight's teaching. Not so much to teach out of Joshua, but just to kind of launch us into the direction for tonight. Because it's about Joshua and a city by the name of Jericho. Now in Joshua, verse 13 of chapter 5, Joshua 5.13 in the Old Testament. I hope you bring your Bibles Wednesday nights. That should just be automatic for most of us by now. Okay, 5.13. Now when Joshua was near Jericho, he looked up and saw a man standing in front of him with a drawn sword in his hand. And Joshua went up to him and asked, Are you for us or for our enemies? Neither he replied, but as commander of the army of the Lord, I have now come. Then Joshua fell face down to the ground in reverence and asked him, What message does my Lord have for his servant? And the commander of the Lord's army replied, Take off your sandals for the place where you are standing is holy. Joshua did so. Now Jericho was tightly shut up or closed off because of the Israelites. And no one went out and no one came in. And then the Lord said to Joshua, See, I have delivered Jericho into your hands, along with its king and its fighting men. March around the city once with all the armed men. Do this for six days. Have seven priests carry trumpets of ram's horns in front of the ark. On the seventh day, march around the city seven times with the priests blowing the trumpets. And when you hear them sound a long blast in the trumpets, have all the people, say that with me, have all the people give a loud shout. And then the wall of the city will collapse and the people will go up, every man straight in. There's a couple of observations on this text. You see, one thing that I trust jumps out at you is that here's a city where life and death are in its grip. I mean, it's in a serious condition. And I'm really struck by the fact that when Joshua has this vision, he says, well, are you for us or against us? And I love the response, don't you? What's he say? Neither. What does that mean? Why didn't he say, I'm for you, Joshua? Because, folks, God deals in an entirely other plane than what we think right and wrong is all about. I mean, that's so important. We think we're right. Many times I think we're just goofy. I mean, I really do. And God is in another plane. I'm not for you. I am God. And I'm holy. And then he gives Joshua the simple marching orders by which Jericho falls into his hands. Of course, we know the story and the incredible victory that it was. And it's not my intention tonight to really talk about that specific incident except to say we're here tonight and we're launching a specific focus on prayer because I have a conviction that our city is shut up. I really believe that. I don't think we're seeing but a fraction of what God wants to work in the inhabitants of our city right now. I spend as much time in my pastoral ministry outside the church helping people through crises as I do kind of strategizing how to do more. That's sadly the way it is. And I have a sense from the Lord that this whole city is like shut up right now. And God is looking for a band of intercessors such as you who mean business about a city such as this because of the people to make a difference in that city. That's pretty heavy stuff. Some of you may be new to Pittsburgh. Of course, some people get transferred in and so on and really don't have a vision for the city or understand the city. Some of us have been born here. Some of us think it's the greatest place. Some of us wish we could go anywhere else. All I know is this, that God for some reason has you here now. And you can decide. Do you want to get on with what God has for our city? Are you content to just kind of let the city slowly rot away? One of the things that I do, I'm part of a group with Pittsburgh Leadership Foundation of seven churches. I've mentioned it occasionally but probably you haven't caught it yet. Seven churches that have as a purpose to help release the Spirit of God upon the city. We haven't done anything corporately yet because we've still been planning and strategizing. But I want to share with you that within the next year, I believe, one of the things that we're going to do, all seven churches, is have a corporate worship service. Probably at the Civic Arena where we will together declare symbolically our unity as the church combined in this mission that we have to impact the city in specific ways. But I want to tell you one thing I know for sure, folks. All the programs out there, all the great evangelists that may come, Billy Graham and all the rest, it won't matter unless somebody, somewhere, understands what's being said in this passage right here. That there's a battle going on and it's won. Why did Joshua have to run around that city all those times? What is that symbolic of? The fact that you just got to do the stuff of God until such time as the Lord says, now blow the trumpet. And I perceive that lots of times people are running around blowing their own little trumpets and the city isn't coming down and they don't know why. Does that strike you that way? But anyhow, none of this was in my notes. I'm just kind of sharing from my heart here from what I feel like the Spirit is leading us to talk about. I wanted to talk at some length tonight to help you establish your own personal prayer life. And I just want to say that part of that, you know, has to do with the whole issue of discipline. I played golf this summer for the first time in two years. First of all, don't like it all that much. Anyone say amen to that? Okay. Number two, doctor told me that that's not a good thing to do if you have a back problem. So I kind of avoided it. But this one time, you know, I just had to see if God was really working. So I agreed to play with this couple. Carol was with me. She drove my cart so she could have a good laugh for the morning. And this other couple were really good. I mean, like they're five handicappers and they're just, you know. And one thing I didn't want to do was embarrass myself or the church because I was, you know, representing you all, of course. And, I mean, this is no exaggeration. I said, hon, you know, I could have shot like the moon out. I mean, that's how bad I could be. And walked up to the first tee. And it was kind of, I mean, these two people hit the ball like 300 yards or 250 or something. One thing I know is God did not create woods and drivers. He created irons. So that's what I used. And so I hit this iron. And I really had a good shot for me. It was just a great shot. Probably went maybe 200 yards or something. And they were walking back to the cart. And I turned to Carol who was, you know, they're walking this way, you know, away from me, looking the other way. And Carol's in the cart. And she went, wow. And I went, oh, God. And I mean, I have to say, it was a miracle round for me, folks. It really was. I mean, by the end of it all, I broke a hundred, if you know anything about that. And for nine, that's not bad. I don't think. I was a full round. But now contrast that with Steve Jones, who you may have recalled in a couple of years ago won the Bob Hope Desert Classic. Never forget this little thing on TV. I was watching, preparing to watch the news. And he came on. And he just won this big tournament. I think it's the first one of the year. It's a big tournament. And the guy came over to the announcer and said, how does it feel? And he said, well, it feels okay. But I just want to thank the Lord Jesus Christ for being here with me. Because he changed my life. And I want to give him the glory. You know, I love it. And that has happened. The announcer's like, no, well, back to you, Stan, or something. What are you going to say? What are you going to say? It was great. Now, what's the difference between my miracle round for me of breaking 100 and his like 71 or two or whatever he shot to win the tournament? What's the difference? Apart from a little natural talent probably. What? He played a ton of golf. That's probably all he's ever done for the last 20 years. I mean, experts, professionals, they'll play hundreds of rounds every year, shoot the same shot thousands of times in some cases, until they get it. It's no big secret. Can I tell you something? The secret to the Christian life is no big secret. People are looking for a secret. You know what a synonym for secret is in most people's lives? Shortcut. There is no shortcut to a great prayer life. There isn't. It comes because you determine that one day you want the things of God in your life more than anything else. There's no shortcut to wealth that I've found. Is there? How about to wisdom? How about to fitness? People try it every way possible. It doesn't happen. Neither is there a shortcut to learning to pray. I read those books like you do. You know, the ones by Praying Hyde. I always thought they referred to his skin because he was like always on his knees. You know, just like they turned into... Some of these people, they pray so long in the same place that there's grooves worn out. You know, you read that. There's some contemporary pastors that I read who pray five hours a day. Now, I've read that and I've been through the guilt trips, folks. That's not me yet. I mean, you know, I'm not there. I have to tell you. I know that disappoints some of you, but that's not where I live. I don't live five hours a day and pray. But I've also discovered something. That God will answer your prayer tonight to help you grow in the secret of building a prayer life if you mean business with Him. And the purpose that I have tonight is not to try to flash some new revelation. If you came tonight because you thought, well, Jay's going to give me the secret and I'm going to suddenly become an instant prayer warrior, hey, you know, I'm sorry. There isn't one. You know what I did the last few days? I peeled through my notes of the prayer message I've given over the last three years. I have very nicely ordered files where I pulled out all the messages I gave in prayer. And folks, there's some dandies in there. And if you ain't got it by then, you know, one more isn't going to help. I thought about pulling one out and just saying, well, you know, can I read this one again? You know why I know it's not going to help? Because it hasn't helped me. There is no secret. It's a matter of saying, Lord God, I'm tired of just getting beaten around by the devil. We sang kind of half-heartedly tonight, you know, I command you, Satan. I bet he was just shaking in his boots. Come on. We need to decide that we're just not going to let it rip us up anymore. We're not going to let the enemy have his way. We're not going to let people that we love just continue to slide inevitably into hell's jaws. I just want to encourage you tonight in some little way, if all of us could take one step farther on in our prayer discipline, I'd be a happy pastor. Is that a reasonable goal? You know, about a year, well, ten months ago or so, when I first started having these back problems, I couldn't do any exercises. Someone in the church lent me a Nordic track. You know what those things are? They're funny. You look funny on them. You've got to try. It's kind of hard to do at first. But once you get into it, it's a really good exerciser. I remember that when I first did it, it lasted like three minutes, and I just couldn't do it. Not because I didn't have the wind, but the pain was so bad. Well, now, you know, it's no problem. I could go on indefinitely, as long as they kept hosing me down and giving me food. I just could keep going on, I think. And it just took all this time. And I want you to know something. If you can only pray three or four minutes right now, and then you lose it, be encouraged that if you devote yourself tonight to some of the things I'm going to share with you, over time, you can become a person you can pray for a half hour, effectively, or an hour, or a person that gets with some other people and feels comfortable praying. If you're a newer Christian, it's real intimidating sometimes. I've been in prayer circles with some people that just blew my socks off. They were so spiritual. And you think, well, if that's why I have to... Do you ever feel that way? Intimidated? Well, tonight, I'm just going to share with you some basic things, but maybe some of them will click again for you. Can I say parenthetically right now? The Lord has planted into me a vision that I won't share tonight, but I want you to be just starting to whisper it in prayer before the Lord, to mobilize a thousand of us on a weekly basis in prayer. Morning prayer meeting isn't going to get there. Wednesday night prayer meeting is going to get there. I have a vision as to how to do it, and I'm going to share it. I've already begun to share it with the elders, and we're going to pray about it and hear the Lord. But I want you to pray that in the next months... We don't need a new thing right now. We've got plenty of new things, but this has really got me excited because I believe it's going to work. First of all, let me share with you three basic things. This should be in your prayer outline. How about slipping me that outline to make sure I don't forget all those things. Okay? Yeah, the three basics. Letter C. If you want it to become a little more effective, just a little more effective in prayer, number one, you need a certain place to have your prayer time. Is that basic or what? Why do I mean that? I mean that I feel like there's something in every human being that searches for a place. We're created with a need for a place. And folks, I've heard people that they have their prayer time in the weirdest places imaginable. Bathrooms, I've heard it. But that's the only place they can go to. Remember Susanna Wesley, John Wesley's wife? She had 18 children. some of you felt bad for yourself. 18 of them. You know where she had her quiet time? She used to sit down in a stool in the center of her big one-room giant place and pull the apron up over her head. And the children learned that when the apron was up, you let mom alone because she was praying. Doesn't that free you up that it doesn't have to be a fancy place? The inside of an apron pulled over you is not that great. I don't know about you. I have found an enormous lift in my prayer life when I have a certain place that I go to. I encourage you. How many have that? Let me see your hand. How many don't have it? Let me see your hand. Thank you for your honesty. Let me encourage you. Is there a problem finding it? Make it happen. Businessmen and women, if you have... Go in early to the office if that's the place you can go. Go into the basement. Find a place. Sit in the car, in the garage. I don't know, but find a place. Number two, have a certain time. I'm of the conviction that you begin to build an expectation, an anticipation when you have a certain time to pray. God certainly hears you when you bomb Heaven in the middle of the day or whenever it might be. But folks, to build the kind of life we're talking about, it needs to be a discipline. Exercise is the same way. If you just say, well, I'll exercise when I feel like it. Guess when you feel like it? Never. If you feel like it, I'll pray when I feel like it. Guess when you feel like it? Never. How many of you pray early in the morning? Let me see your hands. How many of you pray late at night? How many in the middle of the day? How many of you are lying? Okay. I just want to make sure. Some people have their hand up. I know we pray all the time. I'm talking about, as you see here in a little bit, I'm talking about focused prayers. I'm not just talking about communion with the Holy Spirit. I'm talking about focused intercession. You can't pray all the time that way. I mean, the Bible indicates that Jesus went off to a solitary place and prayed. Certainly, he had communion with the Spirit, but he also knew he had to get off to pray. All right. Got that? And thirdly, the third foundation is a certain pattern. here's where I'll part company with a handful of you who are a little more spontaneous. You get uncomfortable when someone says, pray this way. And I understand that, and that's okay. If you have something that works for you spontaneously, God bless you, go for it. I have found, and thousands know, millions of people have found, that it helps to have a pattern to pray. I've shared various ones over the years, the ACTS pattern, Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication, but far and away the one I commend to you the most, especially if you're a newer Christian or especially if you're drawing your spiritual prayer life right now, the best I've ever found, bar none, is the Lord's Prayer. Now, anyone have an idea why that's probably so? Jesus thought of it. You know, that gives a little bit of credibility. Every scholar I've studied, and there are a number of them, have said that that is not just words that you're supposed to parrot. People say to me from time to time, why don't we say the Lord's Prayer in church? Well, we could. I mean, there's no reason why we couldn't. But that's not what he was getting at. What was he getting at? Pray according to this pattern of prayer. Every scholar I've read says that. It's a pattern. It's a pattern that Jesus gave. Now, inside your notebook, everyone turn your notebook, pull out the card. What I've inserted in there for you is Larry Lee's very effective prayer outline. I'm unapologetic in telling you I think this is probably the best little tool I could ever give you to help you to pray. I've read, I don't know, 40, 50 great prayer books. They're all in my office right now. This little outline helped me more in my prayer life than all those books. I mean, except maybe one or two that had a profound impact on me. But this will really make a difference. Let me just touch on it a couple things for you. And by the way, I'm so glad some of you are just like eating this up. I mean, that blesses me. Some of you are like this is old to you. I understand that. But maybe you just need to recharge it a little bit and be encouraged. I get a certain time with the Lord in a certain place and I say, well God, I'm here for you. I just want to be with you. And I say, and I'm glad you're my Father because I come to you under the blood of Jesus. Hebrews 10, 19. That's the other thing in your little blank space there. We have access to God through the blood of Jesus Christ. Folks, the first thing before anything comes out of your mouth about how lousy you feel or how tired you are or how bad the day is, is, Father, thank you that no matter what, if I drop dead right now, I'm your son or daughter. Woo! I mean, that's good stuff. That so gives perspective. I come in the blood of Jesus Christ and I call you my Father, not just, you know, great omnipotent distant sovereignty. No, my Father. And then I go on and say, hallowed be thy name. Now, this isn't meant to give a developed teaching tonight, but those names you see in the center column there, the names of God, those are the Old Testament, Old Covenant names. Jehovah, Yahweh, Sidkenu, and on down you go, Makedesh, Shalom, Shammah, Rothay, Jireh, Nissi, and Rohi. Each one of those is a developed name of the Lord which talks about His character. Let me tell you what happens to me every time I do this. Every time, I get stuck on one of those names. This morning, I got stuck on Jehovah Makedesh. And I can get, I mean, how many say the purpose of prayer is to convene with God? That's more than anything it is. I start thinking about who God is and it just helps me enormously to get freed up, to enjoy Him. And I go through these names. Now, in case you want to know more, we have tapes that I taught this message on several years ago back there that you can borrow or purchase if you'd like and hear all this in detail. Notice that on the left, He talks about some of the areas of benefit. Well, because He's Jehovah Sitkanu, my righteousness, and Jehovah Makedesh, my sanctifier, I walk in a forgiveness of sins. I'll tell you what, folks, how many of you know that I sin every day just like you? And sometimes, I get embarrassed about it, I feel guilty about it, but I can start my morning and say, Lord, thank you that you've forgiven me. You're my righteousness. You're my holiness. You've washed my sin away from me. And no matter what happens, God, the blood was enough. And on I go. And just, you have to pray on Jehovah Rophe, my healer, over and over and over again, just meditating on that. There's a promise there, son of body, and so on. That can take me 15 minutes right there with no problem. I sing some of the courses. How many know some courses? How many know courses with those names right in them? Jehovah Jireh, my provider, and so on. We just go and sing all those courses, worshiping the Lord. That's why I always have a quiet place where no one can hear me. Sometimes I start singing to myself. All right, Roman numeral three. Then I say, now my relationship is established. I say, Lord, thy kingdom come. Thy will be done. What a great statement that is. What is the kingdom of God? to me, it's where the righteousness, peace, and joy of the Holy Spirit abide. Amen? Romans 14, 17, that is the kingdom of God. Righteousness, peace, and joy. I go down and pray. First of all, righteousness, peace, and joy for my own life because if my life's messed up, hey, it spills over. I ask the kingdom, the rule of God to come in my life. Then I go down and I pray for Carol and for my family by name, brother, sister, dad, mom, or whoever the Lord brings across my mind. I pray the kingdom of God. Matthew 16, 18 says, whatever we bind on earth shall be what? Bound in heaven. Whatever we loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven. I bind and loose over my family. Then I pray for the church and believe me, again, by this time, if I could pray an hour for the different ministries of the church, praying the kingdom of God would come. I go on then and pray after that for the nation, the local situations and so forth. Now, you can see very easily how sometimes, you can get this far and you might be 45 minutes into the prayer and there's all this left. So the next day I might just jump in at this point. After I've praised a little bit, then I'll come in. Romans 4, give us this day our daily bread. By the way, when I pray for God to provide for you and for me, one thing I know, he isn't going to answer a prayer that I'm denying by my actions. Do you know that's true? In other words, if you're in an adulterous relationship and you say, Lord, forgive my sin of adultery even though I'm going to keep doing it, forget it. If I'm going to say, Lord, provide for me and my family because we need your help but I'm denying his word and I'm not obeying what he's commanded me to do, forget it. The first thing I do is say, Lord, show me in my life if I'm out of order, if I've been getting a selfish attitude or if I've not been faithful in my giving patterns or whatever. Then I can pray with faith and I pray for the Lord to provide, to prosper and all those kinds of things. Notice what he says, be specific, be tenacious. I think that's true. There are some things I've prayed for for several years before they happen. That's okay because I know they're going to happen. Just like I know he's going to bless this church in some ways, it's just taken longer than I thought. Don't you wish you were God? Then you could just make it all happen when you wanted to. The problem is then you'd be responsible for it too. You wouldn't want that. Okay, number five, and then forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. How many times have I spent moments, minutes, long minutes before the Lord asking for forgiveness? I have to say to God's glory, one of the reasons why I've been spared the scars of bitterness even through some disappointment has been because I've learned that this verse works. I specifically ask for forgiveness and then I'm given grace to forgive others. Then number six, lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil. That's where I get real serious with the devil. One of the reasons why I'm doing this teaching and why I've done this notebook and why I'm going to be giving you instruction every Wednesday night that I'm here about prayer is because I'm convinced as someone said to me today, the real nature of the problems you and I face in our homes, in our jobs, in our relationships is not flesh and blood. It's spiritual. But we just don't know how to see it. The Bible tells us clearly that Satan has come to steal, kill, and destroy. And not just talking about your physical body, about everything that matters to you. And you can do a lot to stop that just by understanding how to put on the whole armor of God. Now, I've had people kind of mockingly say, well, you know, does it really matter if you put on the helmet and go through that whole thing? And I say to myself, well, what did the Holy Spirit mean through Paul in Ephesians chapter 6 when he said to do that? Why would he go to all that trouble to enumerate those things if he didn't mean to do it that way? The only thing that makes sense to me. And so I go down and do all those things and you see they stand for different things. Truth and righteousness. The helmet of salvation, number five down there. Let me say something sort of as an aside. It is very possible tonight, listen, that your heart is very right with God. You have a pure heart, but your mind is believing a lie. I'm not going to get better. I'm not going to get a job. I'm not going to get, you know, a relationship that I'm looking for. I'm ugly. I'm no good. You may have a great heart toward God, but if Satan can't get your heart, he goes to your mind. And if he beats on your mind long enough, you finally start believing it in your heart. And that's why you have to put on the helmet of salvation and read the word of God. You know something? That was a word for somebody. The Lord just prompting someone right now, that's what's happened to you. Your heart is right toward God, but your mind has gotten really fouled up because you started believing stuff that you're hearing instead of what God says in His word. Okay? Get a hold of that. Believe the word of God. Okay? Then I pray heads of protection and so on. And it's usually right in here that I get serious about praying for the harvest. And I brighten up a little bit because I believe that's where this comes in, folks. Turn to Isaiah 43. Since you still have your Bibles right there in your laps, I want you to see something that's real powerful. And I'm almost getting near the end here. Isaiah 43. And if you ever come on a Tuesday or Friday morning, you'll find us doing this physically here in the building we have for years. Sometimes we do it with real faith. Sometimes we do it kind of fumbling through. But here's a wonderful thing. Isaiah 43. Are you there? But now this is what the Lord says. He who created you, O Jacob, who formed you, O Israel, fear not, for I have redeemed you. I have called you by name. You are mine. And when you pass through the waters, I'll be with you. And when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. And when you walk through the fire, you will not be burned. The flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord, your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior. I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Sheba in your stead. Since you are precious and honored in my sight and because I love you, I will give men in exchange for you and people in exchange for your life. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bring your children from the east and I will gather you from the west. I will say to the north, Give them up! And say to the south, Let them go! Bring my sons from afar and my daughters from the ends of the earth. Everyone who's called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed to make. You can call me weird. It doesn't matter to me. All I can tell you is I believe that over the years we've been doing this, we're making, we're encroaching the enemy's territory. We haven't really taken it yet. When we finally break it loose, folks, it's going to be like a dam bursting. Whatever that means to you, it means to me that God's going to bring thousands of religious, hard-hearted people to Christ. And we'll probably be just like in tears all over the place because we know it's God. I pray that. We pray it. Never underestimate. You know, when you pray God's word, what does Isaiah 55, 11 say about His word if it goes forth? It doesn't come back void. It's going to come back with effect. Isn't that powerful? In case you ever came and wondered why we said that, that's where it is, right there, Isaiah 43. And then we end by saying, For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. It's sort of, Lord, whatever happens now, you get the praise. We give you the glory and the honor and the praise. Now, I've just summarized six teaching tapes. I have. That's literally, I think, what I have back there. And you can pick those up or if there's not enough, just put in an order or something. We'll make some more for Sunday. Oh, by the way, our new tape ministry location will be the old nursery. And the two-year-olds are running it now. Get them into the ministry, we thought, you know, one way or another. No, actually, it's right back in that door. However, it won't be ready until Sunday, so you have to pick up the tapes tonight at the visitor center, the big round center right in the middle of the front foyer. Now, let me just conclude with this. I could go on and maybe I, you know, I hope I haven't lost any of you in this because I've gone so fast. But let me just conclude three things that motivate me more than anything else to be a prayer. Number one, personal need. I can't tell you how much prayer means to me when I see myself as I really am. In other words, I don't pray when I think I don't need God. I do pray when I know that I do need Him. Forgive me for mentioning this again another time tonight which I really don't like to do as much as I have. But when this whole back injury problem developed, that was the first time in my life I had to understand healing for me. And it put a whole new light on it. It was the first time I searched the scriptures about healing because it meant something. Not just because people wanted to know. And I've taught on healing lots of times before that. But I want you to know something. When you see yourself as you really are, when you realize your need before God, when you realize as Jesus said, apart from me you can do what? Nothing. When you believe that, you're driven to pray. And I say it unapologetically, folks. When you walk by my office and hear me praying or if you join me here in the mornings to pray, it's because I know that I don't have what it takes to leave this church by myself. I know. And if I didn't have this church, I don't have what it takes to live a life that's pleasing to God by myself. I know it. Bill Bright, who's a wonderful Christian leader now for 30 some years, founded the Campus Crusade organization. Some of you probably have been. He said just a few years ago that he was pulling back from his international ministry of speaking and motivating people and so on, mainly to give himself to intercession and prayer. Because he realized that the world would not change until someone learned how to get through to God in prayer. Jamie Buckingham, who just last July, June 30th or whatever, was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Jamie's written 30 books. Many of you have his books. He said, it wasn't until this happened that I realized what prayer was about. Why is it that we have to get desperate? I don't know that. But thank God, maybe tonight something will click that you'll just get serious enough to take one more step. That's all I can hope for. Personal need, it just carries me along. Number two, here's the one that you can do something about, specifically, personal accountability.
