A New Release of Boldness

This is North Way tape number 505. This message on a new release of boldness was given by Pastor Jay Passavant of North Way Christian Community on June 1st, 1986. The presence of the Lord is a precious thing. Someone said after the first service, I hope it can be as good the second service. And I believe by God's grace, beloved, we are sharing in something that many of us have spent our lives longing to see. Paul, leave the lights up, would you, brother? Thanks. All my life, I know that I had searched for the Lord, and I knew there was more to God than what I was experiencing in church life. And now I realize, beloved, that what it is that we all hunger for, I heard a man say two days ago, very successful man, there's something in my heart that I can't satisfy. One of the people associated with this building project, a very dear man, a very friendly man, was saying, there's something in me I can't satisfy, he was saying. And he looked right at Scott and me, and he said, and I see it in you men, and I'm envious. And we had a chance to say, my friend, what you see is Jesus. And I want to tell you, beloved, do you know how privileged you are to be those out of all the peoples of the earth, you are experiencing what billions of people know nothing about. Billions of people. My heart, those of you who worry about pride and getting puffed up and all this, I appreciate your concern. But I want to tell you, the reason why I'm not real concerned about that is because God showed me once that I had nothing to do with who I am. His grace made me what I am. And because of His grace, you're here just like I'm here. And if God's choosing to use us, all I want to do is just be in the flow of that. And all the peoples of the earth, beloved, those are the ones that we're called to take this gospel to. And they haven't heard, they haven't had the opportunity even to say yes or no. I just want you to be thankful today for that one thing if nothing else, that you have an opportunity to acknowledge Jesus Christ, the real Jesus, in your life. If you're visiting with us today, I'm sure that you sense there's something different here. And you see a man of 35 years as an executive with a major corporation, loving God exuberantly. And you hear people give testimonies about going out, giving their lives away to foreign countries. You know that something's happening. And that's something, beloved, is we're encountering a real Jesus. I'll tell you this afternoon, the real Jesus is going to be here, beloved. And if you're bringing somebody, I trust that you can trust the Spirit of the Lord, can't you? You can trust Him. He's going to be gentle, but He's going to melt many hard hearts today. The Lord has spoken one word to me about what He wants to do. He said, I am going to move in ministry. That was the words, a ministry is going to happen. And I just interpret, I receive that as all across the boards. From salvation to healing to deliverance to release. Why? Because Jesus is here in this place. Hallelujah. Would you pray for me as I just share this word with you today? Pray for me that I would say what God wants you to hear of the word that He's preparing. Oh, Lord, I need that anointing, Father. God, I know, Lord, that there's no worthiness in me. God, I know the Holy Spirit lives in this temple. And Spirit of God, I just pray that You would speak now through the words You've given me. And there would be an impartation of the breath of Your life now to these precious saints, Lord. These who are here at Your bidding. These that You've brought today. One alike the other, God. At the foot of the cross, standing side by side. Speak to us now, Holy Spirit, in Jesus' name. Amen. Oh, Lord. Turn in your Bibles to 2 Corinthians. I'd like to stay down on the floor, but I realize that in the back it's difficult to see. And so for the sake of those of you who need to keep a point of focus, I'll stay up here. 2 Corinthians chapter 4. I was so encouraged by the word that our sister brought. Because you see, about 10 days ago, the Lord impressed me that I was to interrupt this series of messages on worship, which I brought for two weeks and then our brother Grant Smith brought last week. Interrupted this week because the Lord wanted to transmit a message of something new that He was going to do. And of course, Gene, you weren't even here in the first service, were you? No, so this word was not based on what she heard me say earlier. It's a word that God wants to impress us with today. Because He's doing something new, and we haven't begun to see, beloved, the full measure of what it is. Look with me in 2 Corinthians chapter 3, and I'm going to begin in verse 7. Now if the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came with glory so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses because of its glory. We're talking about the law when He received the Ten Commandments and so on. Fading though it was, will not the ministry of the Spirit be even more glorious? If the ministry that condemns men, as you see, the law brought men to realizing their sinfulness, that they could not please God. That's what the law tells us. We just can't do everything that God says. If that ministry was glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings righteousness? For what was glorious has no glory now in comparison with the surpassing glory. In other words, the law, as glorious as that made Moses, is nothing compared to what you have been called to receive in Jesus Christ, the ministry of righteousness. And if it was fading away, if what was fading away came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts? Now look at verse 12. That's our focus for this morning. Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. Say those two words, would you please? Very bold. We're not like Moses who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. But their minds were made dull for to this same day the veil remains when the Old Covenant is written. It has not been removed because only in Christ is it taken away. Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil comes over their hearts. But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. There are some anyones here today, I trust, who are going to turn to the Lord and see the veil, the thing that you don't understand about God, taken away. If anyone turns to the Lord, that veil is taken away. Now, the Lord is the Spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. And we who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory of being transformed into His likeness with ever increasing glory which comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. Now beloved, as lovely as things are around us this morning, it's fading away already. Do you know that? It's fading already. In fact, I just helped it fade a little bit. This is why you're not going to bring anything in here to drink. When I was glorifying God, I stepped in the cup. A little bit of water spilled out. I don't think it will be anything disastrous. But this glory is going to fade away. The Bible says that we have an ever increasing glory. Does that make anyone a little bit excited today? That means that we're going to continue to grow in the glory that God has put in us through His Son, Jesus. I want to talk to you today about boldness, church. I want to talk about boldness. Boldness as the people of God. Right near the end of World War II, Norway was invaded by the Germans and a bishop there by the name of Berggroth was taken prisoner by a traitor whose name was Ludwig Quisling. Quisling was infatuated with power and he wanted to rule over the people. But he knew that this bishop was popular and had the support of the people. And he knew that the bishop had influence over the people. And he called him in and he looked at Berggroth and he said these words, I'd like to take your head off. And the bishop, full of the Holy Spirit, looked back at him and said Quisling, square in the eyes, here I am. Go ahead and do it. And Quisling, afraid of what might happen in the people and taken back by the boldness of that bishop was sent back to jail where he was released a year later. And Quisling had the very thing done to him which he had wished would happen to Berggroth. You see, beloved, I pray for a boldness on this church that can look in the face of death if it calls for it and say, the righteousness of God will prevail in this situation. In the world, boldness comes very natural to some people. And yet, it's a very fine line between boldness and arrogance and pride, isn't it? One of my favorite athletes, because of his boldness and his aggressive style of play is Pete Rose. Anyone who watches baseball says, this is a man that goes all out for it. And he's extremely successful because of that posture. But it's so easy to go right past that into arrogance and to pride and so on. The kind of boldness I'm talking about, church, isn't a boldness that trusts in flesh or the confidence of who I am. It's a boldness that comes because God has put his hand upon us and says, I am with you. I am in you. And I want to say to you today so many of us are easily duped by the devil who would say, well, you know, you're living in a pluralistic society here. I mean, people have their right to believe what they want to believe. And if they want to do their thing, then you have to let them. And you know something? There is such a watering down of righteousness. There is such an acquiescing to values that are not of God. Why? Because Christians won't speak up. They won't say what God has said is true. They lack the boldness to speak the word of the Lord. You see, Peter and John, when they were faced with the Sanhedrin Council that said, now you've got to quit talking in that name of Jesus. They looked at them and they said, you'll have to decide if what we say is judged by the law or not, but we cannot help but say what we have experienced. In the last ten days, God has just been burning this matter of boldness into my heart. And this is the day of which our sister prophesied. A day of boldness for the church. A day when you as brothers and sisters in Christ are going to rise up in a new spirit of boldness and do the things that God has called us to do. You know, the Bible says, this is really a wonderful scripture, that the wicked flee though no one pursues, but the righteous are bold as a lion. Turn and growl at somebody, would you right now? No, I'm just kidding. Don't do that. The righteous are bold as a lion. That's Proverbs 28.1. It's so like our God Church. He loves boldness. Do you know that? He said, he was talking to Moses and he said, listen, you get out there. I'm going to be with you. I'll take care of everything that confronts you. And then Moses was able to say to the people of Israel in Deuteronomy 31, these words, do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you. He will never leave you nor forsake you. Every time you see courage in the Bible, that's the same word in root as boldness. In fact, it's translated with that word many different times. Joshua, remember in chapter 1, verse 8 of his book says, be strong and courageous, do not tremble nor be dismayed for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. And then I love this story of Saul. Remember King Saul? When he was just anointed and he'd gone back into the fields, which was kind of unusual. And he came out one day and all the people were weeping and they were saddened. And Saul said, well, what's going on here? And the people cried out and said, well, the Ammonites have come and they've told us that if we don't surrender to them, they're going to take over our land and hold us captives. In fact, you know what they said to them? When the leaders said, well, can we make a deal here? You know what the Ammonites said? Yeah, we'll make a deal with you. We'll just gouge out your right eye instead of killing you. And then you can be our slaves. The Bible says something very fascinating. It says that a fierce anger rose up in Saul. And you know who that anger was addressed at, beloved? Not at the Ammonites, but at the people who would cower back even though God had said He'd be with them to fight with them. And it was out of that anger, out of that rising boldness that came up that the people were rallied together and Saul led them into victory over the Ammonites. And then, it's interesting, the people say, who said that Saul shouldn't be king? Because he's proven his power. God wants to anoint us with boldness. How do you see Jesus this day, church? Little Jesus, meek and mild, I'll sit in your lap like a little child. I praise God for the compassionate heart. If you're here today hurting inside, Jesus bears with you like no man can bear with you. But, beloved, there's an image that we have, you know, of Jesus just kind of trudging along with His hood over and just, you know, head down. And He's humble in the sense of what we think humble is of like, well, hey, I don't want to bother anybody here, but, you know, my father did send me. I'll be gone in a little while. That's not Jesus. The image of Jesus that I see in the Scriptures, beloved, is a man who was bold like no other man. A man who walked in boldness at every turn. One day He was in the temple and it was, I'm sure, a very rough, power-charged kind of time. Because, you see, the religious leaders wanted Him dead. And they were all gathered together and they were looking for a way, the Bible says, to kill Him. And a man walked in with a withered hand and it was the Sabbath day and all these leaders were gathered around. And you can picture the emotion of that time. They were watching Him just like this. And Jesus looked at that man and He said, Stretch forth your hand and He healed them. And all the leaders right there started to murmur among themselves with hate. And Jesus turned to them and said, You brood of vipers. He was, the Bible says, inside. He was angry with their callousness. Boldness to speak what God had given Him to speak and to do what God had called Him to do. Jesus said Himself in John 18 verse 20, I have spoken boldly to all the world. And boldness, beloved, is something that the church cannot go on without. The church of the New Testament was a bold church. New Testament Christians were bold Christians. That's why it says in Acts 4.31 that they prayed for boldness to speak the Word of God and miracles and signs and wonders followed. I'll tell you, I don't want anything to do with a church that just kind of, no, maybe hopes we survive to the rapture. That's not what this is about. Amen? We're not here to just hang on until one day God comes and lifts us out by some divine rescue mission. That's not the mentality that the Bible talks about. When do you need boldness? Well, you need boldness, beloved, when you begin to walk out of this place. I'll tell you right now. You can be bold with one another right here because it's pretty safe. Right? In fact, I'll even go as far as to say this. The world would be very happy to let us sit right here in our nice newly remodeled building and worship the Lord and sing songs of praise. I'll tell you, let me just give you an illustration of that. We called the newspaper to tell them that we were here to stay. And you see, even in those circles, no big deal. You see, we're not really interested. Well, we'll try to put a couple lines in. In my spirit, I was able to receive them. We had a cordial conversation and I'm sure there'll be something written. But I want to tell you something, beloved. When we as a church begin to assault the kingdoms of this world, to make them the kingdoms of our God and of His Christ, the world will take notice and they're going to resist the move of God. They're going to stand up and fight because they don't want to know the light. The Bible says men prefer their evil deeds to the light of God. You want to know why Jimmy Swagger comes under condemnation and attack all the time? I'm not endorsing everything he's saying. The reason is because, beloved, he speaks boldly. He says the truth and other people, other denominations, other media, they don't like it but he speaks it. And I want to say to you, the minute you decide to get bold, you're going to get attacked. Are you ready to get attacked for that? Are you ready to face the persecution that's going to come? The Lord so impressed me that today was going to be a day when a new release of boldness was going to fall on the church. That there was going to be an anointing of the Holy Spirit for boldness today. To everyone who wants to receive boldness for your life. Now boldness comes in two specific ways and it's interesting as you study the New Testament, it's always in conjunction with speaking. Isn't that interesting? Always speaking boldly. How many find that hard? That's not hard to understand, is it? When do you find it most difficult to be bold? When the Lord says, speak to that person, right? You're sitting around a table of people talking about this self-righteous TV preacher and this ministry that's always taking money and they come to you. What do you think? You go to one of those churches, don't you? Oh, gee, you're going to... What time is it now? Where's the boldness? It's got to come on your lips, church. It's got to come right out of here. Boldness in speech and boldness in faith. Those are the two ways that the words applied in the Greek New Testament. Boldness in speech, boldness in faith. Boldness to see a vision and fix ourselves upon it. Oh, beloved, God's giving us a vision and He's saying, fix your eyes upon it boldly and go after the vision of God as a church. Now, there's three specific ways I want to touch on that boldness needs to rise and you might want to write these down. Let's just skip down to the outline, okay? Boldness, number one, with our Heavenly Father. Now, Fred kind of alluded to this and gave you a little bit of insight but let's all turn there to Hebrews chapter 4 and look at what the Bible says about the way in which we are to deal with God as we come in prayer. Look at this. Look at this now. You may have never seen this before. You might be a new believer, never seen it. Look at this. Read it, would you? Verse 16, let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence or the Greek New Testament word is pericia, which means boldness. How many of your Bibles say boldness? Anybody? So that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in our time of need. Who's talking there? That's the Holy Spirit speaking to the church, talking to believers. Who's sitting on the throne of grace? Our Heavenly Father. Who's sitting in His right hand? We're talking about prayer here. Now, if I were to take a bit of a survey today and say, well, tell me what you think God is like. The images that you would begin to share would be so diverse. It happens, you see, when we're so little. Someone shared with me after the first service. They were kind of watching their little four-year-old play by herself in the living room while they were making dinner. And the little four-year-old was sitting on one side of the sofa having a conversation. Then she'd jump over to the other side and talk to herself. Go back and forth. And mom thought that was cute. Then the little four-year-old stopped and said, yes? What? Looking up and she said, I know you're always watching me. I'll try better. What was she saying? See, her mom had taught her very correctly that God is always watching over you. But you see, in a little mind, that can mean lots of things. And so the mom, in her wisdom, went after that situation and said, God's watching you, but not always to come down on you. He just wants to protect you and keep you. Now, beloved, the stories of what might have happened to you as your father abused you, as someone, some image of God that sees him as a judge with a giant hammer waiting to drop on you. Or sees him as, well, I've got things in motion, now it's up to you. You know, the God who's removed himself syndrome. Or, you know, a lot of people today see God as their good buddy. Hey, 10-4, good buddy God. Or the man upstairs. You ever wonder how long those stairs are? The man upstairs. What's your image of God? You see, beloved, because the way in which boldness comes begins with who you see yourself to be in the presence of God. You better hear that. Because who you see yourself to be will determine your boldness. And my spirit grieves so that people don't see themselves as received by God, but see themselves as put down by God, and put out by God, and unworthy of God, and all these things. And they don't see God as their Abba, as their father, as their daddy. They don't see God saying, come into my presence and tell me what you need. Back in the corner of the building there is my office. And every once in a while, especially in the summer, I'll be in there, I'll maybe be meeting with somebody or maybe, you know, going over some things with someone else for a meeting or whatever. And all of a sudden, you know, the door will just whip open and there will be this little head just come popping in there. And it's Jonathan. He broke all the rules. He didn't stop and see the secretary. He didn't announce his presence over the PA system. He didn't knock on the door. He just came and said, Hey, Dad, where are the cookies? He knows where to find the cookies. And that little guy knows that he's welcome in my presence. Now, I have to correct his manners and all that, but I'm so delighted that in my heart he knows he can come where his dad is. And usually he's got two or three of his buddies, you know, and they're looking at things. Big deal. That's my dad's place. I'm allowed in there. Now, church, that's a simple illustration, but that's God. You see, that's God for us. And I want you to know that there's a time that's coming up for the church that we need to see God as approachable with boldness. Up at the cabin this Wednesday, Scott had been laboring and things, you know, weren't really looking too spiffy long about Wednesday if you were around here. And I went up to the cabin and I was seeking the Lord about a number of things. And it all just seemed to be, you know how things like in a drain can get all clogged together and nothing's breaking loose. You know, you're pouring Drano in and liquid plumber and it's just and nothing's happening. That's the way I felt. And I remember this distinctly. You know, I wasn't saying, oh, dearest God in heaven who rules over all the affairs of these thy humble servants. I looked at God and said, God, we need something! It's time, God. It's time to move and to supply what you promised. I remember looking back like God's right there too, but I turned around like He was right behind me. And I cried out to Him and I said, God, it's time. We're getting back and walking in and Scott said, the wallpaper's here. Things are happening. He had this big smile on his face. Beloved, I want to say to you, it's time to turn to God and say, Lord, now, now pour out your Spirit. Now, God, move in your church. Now bring the harvest. And come with boldness before the throne of grace. You say, well, I need to come humbly and repentantly. I need to, I need to, I'm unworthy. Now, hear me. This is a point that many of you, I believe, still struggle with. To approach God with boldness means that you must see what God has done for you. And if someone has taught you that you are unworthy of seeing God in your life, that you're not, that your sin is ever before you, all these things, beloved, hear me when I say to you, it's time to see yourself as God sees you in Christ. The righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. Don't see yourself after the flesh any longer, but see yourself after the Spirit within you that cries, Abba Father. We need a revelation of that church. So many are hurting and bound up by the fact that they think, well, I know, you know, I go home and I sin again. Would you just watch my head for a second? You see, if that's my old life and this is my new life in Christ, I have a choice to fix my eyes. Will I fix my eyes on what I'm not? My sin nature, my anger that comes out, my pride, my failure, and continually say, oh God, oh God, or will I see myself in Christ? Hidden in Him, buried with Him in baptism, dead with Him on the cross, and alive with Him in the resurrection power. It's our choice. Are you there? Because if you're not there, then we're just filling up the airwaves here. If your life is not hidden with Christ, then if you don't see that as truth, beloved, God said this in His Word. And it's that which will free you to come with boldness and say, Lord, there's nothing in me that's worthy of this, but Jesus in me is worthy. Number two, we need boldness with the enemy. I'm going to say one more thing. The Spirit's prompted me to just touch one more thing on that other point about boldness with our Father. Do you know this? I learned 13 or 14 years ago that sin in its most grievous form is saying to God, I don't need you. That's the essence of pride. I don't need you. That's what sin is. That's the sin that damns people to hell. I don't need God. And it's the same essence that would say in pride, I don't receive what you did for me. Are you hearing me there? See, Jesus did supply all your righteousness. And really, it's the essence of pride to say, I don't... I can't receive that. I'd rather work it out myself. Don't be trapped by that, church. Dear ones, please don't be trapped. Thank you. Some little one just stepped on the extension cord in the back. This whole thing is by one little extension cord. I want you to know that. The boldness of God. And then with our enemies. Though I don't have time to develop this, I know God wants us to be strong and do exploits as a church. What do we do exploits against? David Weiss? No, we do exploits against the kingdoms of darkness. Against things that hold people in bondage. You know, Jesus in Luke 13 sees a woman hunched over like this. Eighteen years hunched over walking like this. And He heals her instantly. Bound by, He says, a spirit of infirmity. And more than you know, church, I'm convinced that people are bound by spirits that don't allow them the liberty that God has won in Jesus Christ. I just want to say to you today that God wants us to learn to speak boldly to those things and take authority over them. You know what I found? That when you begin to move in that, things happen. You can talk sweetly to someone for months. Then you walk in one day and say, no, in Jesus' name, I'm going to take control over this thing. I just did that not too long ago with a young lady. Came in with a couple of people in my office and said, I'm afraid of people. I'm afraid of being with people. I don't like to be with people. I'm afraid. Something just got right. And I got angry at the enemy who was binding up this young lady with a spirit of fear. And I just spoke right to it. Spirit of fear left her just like that. She began to breathe a little more easily and deeply. I'm sensing the love of God in me. And the love of God enabled her to begin to turn and embrace and love other people. It's time, church, that we see boldness is the only way that the enemy is going to be overpowered. How many of you were here when that storm hit us the other day? Friday. Boldness. The power of God. We were gathering a little Bible study right during that time. And that storm hit and the lightning came and four or five times the power, just like it did a moment ago, just a little fraction longer, went out. And this place was calming with workmen. Scott was near the wall going like this, please God. It's got to happen. And when that lightning struck and the power went out, Brother Ron Myers here said, I rebuke that and just instantaneously it came back. Four or five times that happened. Why? And I just, believe me, I understand the severity of that kind of a thing and I know that much destruction was brought. But God kept us and protected us. Why? Boldness. Speaking the Word of God. The final place we need boldness, Church, is with the world. As our beloved ones that were sharing here a moment ago related to us, 850 million Muslims in the world today don't believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God. He's just a good old boy, a good old prophet, right up there near Muhammad, but not quite as high. Hindus. Buddhists and all the rest, all over the world. We're not going to win them by just some little soft sell Jesus, Church. It's going to take boldness to speak to the world today. It's going to take boldness that goes out and says, this is the way of God. This is the Word of God. This is the truth of God. And this church will never be what God wants it to be until it's anointed with boldness. And I believe the time is today that God said, I'm going to release boldness on this people. Now you have a choice. This could be another nice little sermon you can tuck away in your nice little sermon file. I'm just telling you what God said. I might not be saying it very well, but the Lord has said that He's going to anoint His people with boldness. Now you have a choice. You can choose to just continue on kind of safe. I agree for those of you who are ashamed of the gospel. You know who you are. You know when the conversation just moves toward things of God, you find yourself clamming up. I pray that if you're ashamed of what you are, then either change what you are or get over your shame. Amen? Life is too short to be ashamed of what you are. Paul said, I'm not ashamed of the gospel, for it's the very power of God into salvation. You can receive boldness to overcome your shame and testify to His glory. The anointing of the Spirit of the Lord is here to do that today. That's what the Lord told me. He'd be here to anoint you with boldness. Let's close our eyes and receive this time of ministry together. Oh Lord God. Lord Jesus. Oh God. Lord, Your church will never be the instrument of righteousness that You want it to be without boldness, God. And now I just do what You told me to do, Lord, and I present the people to You, Father, those who've had ears to hear today, who want to be touched with an anointing of boldness, God. Who want their lives to be empowered by the Holy Spirit, God. That this would be a day of a new release of boldness. Blessed God. Jesus. Oh God. Oh Lord. Oh God. Praise the Lord. Yes. Praise God. Is there anyone today that would just say, Jay, I've been holding back. I've been trying on my own. And I'm not doing very well. It seems that the storms of life and the obstacles of life are sweeping over me and I'm not bold in taking a stand. And I want to be anointed and baptized afresh in boldness. Would you tell the Lord that right now if that's you? Tell the Lord right now, I want part of this baptism of boldness. Hallelujah. And Jesus is going to bring it. Let's stand together and sing His name. Praise the name of Jesus. Praise the name of Jesus. Praise the name of Jesus. He's my rock. He's my fortress. He's my deliverer in Him. Will I trust? Praise the name of Jesus. Praise the Lord. Now I'm going to instruct you in something. If you want a new release of boldness in your life, I'm going to ask you to come forward and you can kneel right here and say, Jesus, baptize me with boldness today. I want part of what you're doing. I want to be full of your life when I leave this place today. I'm going to ask you to come and move up the steps because I believe God's going to touch scores of you today and baptize you with a new boldness that's right from His throne. Let's sing it again. You come forward and come and receive new boldness today. Let's sing. Praise the name of Jesus. Praise the name. Come forward, brother. Oh Lord, a new boldness in your church, Jesus. He's my rock. He's my fortress. He's my deliverer. In Him will I trust. Praise the name of Jesus. I'm going to ask our elders to come. I want you to lay hands at every head. Elders, every head.
